Inside the Battle: Al Nusra-Al Qaeda in Syria (Trailer)

VICE News filmmaker Medyan Dairieh gains exclusive access to the Syrian branch of al Qaeda, al Nusra, a jihadist group fighting against President Bashar al-Assad's forces and the Islamic State (IS).

Spending more than a month with al Nusra and exploring their expanding territory, Dairieh meets the highest-ranking members of the organization, who reveal their identity on screen for the first time and discuss their military doctrine.

Al Nusra, which swore allegiance to al Qaeda two years ago and is now emerging as a powerful force to rival IS in Syria, has seized several strategic towns in the northwestern province of Idlib. While it supplies water, electricity, and food to the local population, a school run by al Nusra is also grooming young boys to become the next generation of al Qaeda and preparing them for jihad.

VICE News also secures exclusive access to the frontlines of the battle for Abu Al-Duhur airport in Idlib, a major airbase held by Assad's forces, besieged by al Nusra for two years. Aided by dust storms during the attack, the airport was the last remaining government stronghold in the region. Dozens of government soldiers were subsequently executed, according to the monitoring group Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

BUK producer detonates missiles next to pilot’s cockpit in full-scale MH17 experiment (VIDEO)

Almaz-Antey carried out two experiments simulating explosions near MH17. They determined the missile was an older BUK model 9M38 fired from an area under Ukrainian forces’ control, contesting the preliminary findings of the Dutch-led investigation.

Iran touts new torpedo technology, test-fires domestically developed system

user posted image

QUOTE
Iran’s state TV says the country has successfully test-fired an advanced torpedo system.

The domestically developed torpedo system dubbed "ValFajr,"or dawn in Farsi, has a 485-pound warhead that can be used against heavy vessels. It can travel at high speeds and operate in deep or shallow waters.

Citing Iran’s Defense Minister Brigadier General Hossein Dehghan, the country’s Mehr News agency reports that the torpedo system contains “anti-deception” technology.

“What makes Valfajr torpedo stand apart from other similar products in the world is the short preparation time in the supporting and firing units; a characteristic which leads to a remarkable increase in tactical capability and a quick response from surface and subsurface combat units,” said Dehghan during a Valfajr inauguration ceremony on Tuesday.

US military to begin final test of “smart gun” that can kill enemies hiding behind cover

user posted image

user posted image

While high explosive shells are the only ones currently available for the XM25, others, including armor-piercing and nonlethal rounds, are planned.

Early next year, the US Army will begin acceptance testing of a weapon that seems like it's straight out of Call of Duty Advanced Warfare: the XM25 Counter Defilade Engagement System, a "smart" grenade launcher from Orbital Sciences subsidiary Orbital ATK. The XM25 is designed to be an "anti-defilade" weapon—its purpose is to allow soldiers to hit targets shielded by cover.

The XM25 has a built-in "target acquisition and fire control system" that allows any soldier with basic rifleman skills to operate it effectively—the soldier points the weapon's target selector down range, and a laser rangefinder determines how far away it is. The soldier can add additional distance to clear obstacles, and the fire control computer gives the soldier a new aiming point to put the round on target, as well as setting the fusing of the grenade in the chamber. The grenade doesn't have to strike anything to explode, so it can detonate in the air over whatever or whoever might be hiding behind a vehicle, wall, or entrenchment.

The XM25 has been in development since the middle of the last decade. It was originally developed by Alliant TechSystems, which was acquired by Orbital Sciences. In 2010, the Army's PEO Soldier program office sent prototypes of the XM25 to Afghanistan for "forward operational assessment"—use in actual combat to see how it performed. PEO Soldier's Lt. Colonel Chris Lehner said in a post about the field tests that the "introduction of the XM25 is akin to other revolutionary systems such as the machine gun, the airplane, and the tank, all of which changed battlefield tactics. No longer will our Soldiers have to expose themselves by firing and maneuvering to eliminate an enemy behind cover. Our Soldiers can remain covered/protected and use their XM25 to neutralize an enemy in his covered position. This will significantly reduce the risk of U.S. casualties and change the way we fight."

According to Orbital ATK, the XM25 can accurately hit a "point target" at 500 meters and hit targets with area airbursts at up to 700 meters. The semi-automatic grenade launcher, built by Heckler & Koch, is a semi-automatic that carries five 25 millimeter shells per clip. Non-lethal, armor-piercing, and door-breaching rounds are under development in addition to the high-explosive airburst shell currently in production.

The Army is also testing a smart grenade to work with existing rifle-mounted 40 millimeter grenade launchers. Called the Small Arms Grade Munition, the grenade round can detect when it passes over an obstacle and explode once it has cleared it.

Foreign Sales to Keep Apache, Chinook in Production for Decades

By Allyson Versprille

user posted image

Projected foreign military sales of AH-64 Apache attack helicopters and CH-47 Chinook cargo helicopters in conjunction with planned domestic buys are expected to keep the airplanes in production for decades, said Boeing and Army officials.

"It’s easily safe to say that the Apache is going to be flying well into the 2060 timeframe," when you consider both domestic and international demand for the new E-model, said Mark Ballew, Boeing's head of business development for attack helicopters.

According to Kim Smith, Boeing's vice president of attack helicopters, the company has delivered 217 Echo models and 87 of those have gone to international customers. “You can look across the map and see the current presence or future presence of what the Apache has to offer,” she said at a press briefing during the 2015 Association of the United States Army conference in Washington, D.C.

Boeing is currently producing helicopters for South Korea, an order that totals 36 aircraft, and the company was recently awarded a contract by India for 22 aircraft, making it the 15th international customer, Smith said.

One of the main goals for the U.S. Army is to sign a multiyear contract that will cover production of the aircraft from fiscal year 2017 through 2021, said Col. Jeff Hager, U.S. Army project manager for Apache attack helicopters. The contract includes a base quantity of 240. "We’ve got secretary of the Army approval to proceed forward," he said. "We have the proposal from Boeing and we have the [Defense Department's Office of Cost Assessment and Program Evaluation] … conducting their analysis of the proposal right now.” The program office plans to submit the documentation to the secretary of defense in March for approval, Hager said.

Ballew noted that the multiyear agreement offers an advantage because of its options for foreign military sales, which will expedite international transactions.

More foreign military sales would mean greater commonality and interoperability with allies, Ballew said. “If you look through what’s going on in the Asia-Pacific region, we have aircraft in Japan, aircraft in Singapore. We signed a contract with Indonesia," in addition to the sale in South Korea, he said. That “gives us a lot of stability, a lot of interoperability working with the U.S. as well as our allies in that region.”

An improved version of Indonesia's indigenously developed R-HAN 122 mm rocket has been successfully launched during live firing trials at the country's National Institute of Aeronautics and Space (LAPAN) test facility in Garut, West Java in August 2015.

The latest trial validated improvements in flight stability and range that were incorporated into the R-HAN 122B rocket after an earlier test in June.

The rocket is being developed by a consortium that includes state-owned aerospace and defence equipment developers PT Dahana, PT Dirgantara and PT Pindad, as well as LAPAN, and Indonesia's Ministry for Research, and the Technology and Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology.

According to PT Dirgantara, the R-HAN 122B has an overall length of 2,810 mm and features a hydroxylammonium nitrate (HAN) rocket motor, which has a burn time of three seconds. Average stated thrust is 1,437 kg, with an impulse of 4,809 kg/s, enabling it to achieve a maximum range of 30.5 km. The rocket carries a 15 kg warhead, although no details were revealed on its type.

The company also stated that the R-HAN 122B is compatible with the Russian and Czech Republic Grad BM-21 and RM-70 multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS), the latter of which is in service with the Indonesian Marine Corps.

Bahrain and other members of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) are in negotiations to buy the Israeli-developed Iron Dome anti-missile system to defend against "a growing arsenal of Iranian missiles".

The Israeli weapon, which has reduced the effectiveness of rockets fired out of Gaza into Israel by about 90% would be bought through Raytheon and other American contractors who developed the Iron Dome with Israeli arms giant Rafael.

A deal for the whole of the GCC, which includes Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Qatar and Kuwait, would be worth tens, perhaps hundreds, of billions of dollars.

It would also include longer range interceptor missiles such as David's Sling, and the Arrow I and Arrow II which are capable of intercepting supersonic intercontinental ballistic missiles - also a joint venture between Israel and the US.

Khalid bin Mohammed al Khalifa, Bahrain's foreign minister said on the visit to London: "The Israelis have their small Iron Dome. We'll have a much bigger one in the GCC."

The sale of Israeli-developed weapons to a Gulf state, or states, would have been controversial for both the Israelis and the buyers a few years ago.

But both now see one of the main threats to them as the growing military strength and ambitions of Iran.

The US is quietly playing the "middle man" in the deal as a sweetener to bitterness caused in the Gulf over what the leadership in that region believe is a "naive" deal with Iran over its nuclear weapons programme.

"Iran has been trying to undermine and topple government in our region for years," the Bahrain foreign minister said.

He said that Iran's precision missile capacity was certain to increase as a consequence of the lifting of sanctions following the internationally brokered agreement with Tehran to end its nuclear weapons development.

Video: 'This Is A Bad Mistake'
"They will put a lot of money into this programme to develop techniques and tactics to defeat our missile defences ... the strategy appears to be one of saturation to stockpile enough missiles to overwhelm any defence system we build in the Gulf," he added.

As a result of this perceived threat, plans to buy Israeli weapons, via the US, would result in a profits bonanza for both American and Israeli firms.

Talks are understood to be well advanced.

One senior Gulf government source said: "If Netanyahu were not making less of a mess of things and was more like Anwar Sadat (who signed a peace deal for Egypt with Israel) then we would be happy to buy the missiles straight from Israel."

Israel developed its anti-missile systems to defend against Gaza's rockets in part but overwhelmingly against Hezbollah's arsenal in southern Lebanon.

Play video "Iran Claims Israel Drone Shot Down"

Video: Iran Claims Israel Drone Shot Down
Israeli sources claim that this includes weapons capable of precision attacks on any target inside the Jewish State as well as up to 100,000 other missiles of less capability and accuracy which have been accumulated to try to overwhelm the Iron Dome and other systems with Iranian funds and supplies.

Led by Saudi Arabia, GCC nations are locked in a bloody conflict with Shi'a Houthi rebels in the Yemen which western and Gulf intelligence sources insist are backed by Tehran.

The GCC's fears of an Iranian threat increasing when sanctions are lifted has been further deepened by Tehran's growing alliance with Moscow which, like Iran, has come to the military defence of the government of Bashar al Assad in Syria.

As a Shi'a-Russian crescent of influence is seen spreading across the Middle East so Gulf States have been privately reaching out to the old enemy to Israel.

Now with a potentially massive arms sale, those relations are begin to emerge from the shadows of regional rivalries.

Air force now able to launch long-range, precision strikes

The bombers used sophisticated maneuvers and tactics to break through the "enemy defense" and overcame bad weather and the "enemy's electromagnetic blockage", the report said.

The bomber unit is the first to use the H-6K and has flown out of the "first island chain" several times this year to perform long-range drills, according to the newspaper.

PLA military theorists refer to two island "chains" as forming a geographic basis for China's maritime defensive perimeter. The precise boundaries of these chains have never been officially defined by the Chinese government.

Northrop Grumman has revealed the ultimate buggy -  a six seater that boasts its own laser weapon.

Called the Hellhound, it was revealed at the  the Association of the US Army's annual conference in Washington, DC.

QUOTE
is designed to fulfill the US Army's potential light reconnaissance vehicle programme and will compete against other designs for the lucrative contract.

The 5,897 kg (6.5-ton) Hellhound can carry six including the driver.

It is able to generate 100 kVA of exportable power, which is particularly high for a vehicle of its size, with a 120 kW Jenoptik integrated starter generator, with officials boasting it could 'power the entire hall' it was launched in.

Although the version shown off has a more traditional weapon, the firm says it is 'laser ready'  and plans to integrate a 10-kilowatt solid-state fiber laser into the tactical dune buggy.

Northrop is using a modular energy system in the vehicle from German company JENOPTIK, which produces systems capable of generating 100 kilowatts of 'exportable, stable power,' Jeff Wood, Northrop's director of vehicle modernization, said, according to Defence News.

QUOTE
Several firms have working laser weapons, and Lockheed Martin recently showed off its laser weapon.

The 30-kilowatt fibre laser called Athena burnt through the manifold in seconds, despite being fired by a team from Lockheed Martin positioned more than a mile away.

The security firm said the test signifies the next step to fitting lightweight laser weapons on military aircraft, helicopters, ships and trucks.

A walk around Sikorsky “Raider,” contender for world’s fastest military copter

The Raider is based on the research done with Sikorsky's X2 technology demonstrator, which in 2010 (unofficially) broke the speed record for rotary-wing aircraft by flying at 250 knots (287 miles per hour). It is also in many ways a development platform for the SB-1 Defiant, Sikorsky's joint proposal with Boeing for the Army's Future Vertical Lift program. But with the Army having retired its Kiowa scout helicopters, Sikorsky is hoping that the Raider will fill a hole in the Army's aviation capabilities that can't currently be filled by unmanned aircraft. "You need to have a human in the loop assessing the situation" on scout missions, Fell said.

Mystery in Iraq .. 76 military vehicles disappear

Iyad Allawi, head of the National List coalition, revealed the disappearance of seventy six military armored vehicles, pointing out that he personally requested them from an Arab country that sent them to Iraq. Allawi said that the Iraqi Defense Ministry told him that it did not receive any military armored vehicles from any country. On the other hand, Iraqi military sources stated that militias operating within the Popular mobilization backed by Iran took over these armored vehicles while a number of Iraqi MPs greatly insist on impeding the demand to open the investigation in the parliament on the disappearance of these armored vehicles.

Russia to US: Quit Cruise Missile Fairy Tales, Deal With ISIL Toyotas

user posted image

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Russia is calling on the United States to stop telling fairy tales about Russian cruise missiles and to better handle the problem of off-road Toyota pickups ending up in the hands of the Islamic State in Syria, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said Wednesday.

“Undisclosed sources make comments on missiles falling, but they don’t even know how IS militants got off-road Toyotas, so you don’t need to tell us fairy tales about Russian cruise missiles, but better to handle your jeeps,” Zakharova said during a briefing.

She said the Toyotas were delivered to Syria by the United States and Great Britain.

“Now everyone’s asking themselves the question of why IS militants, and not only them, but militants from other terrorist groups, are using off-road vehicles that were produced by Toyota, and the most important thing is where did the IS get them in such quantity. The answer to that question needs to be found not in the regions under the control of the IS, or even more so in Japan…the answer is banal. No one probably expected it. But these off-road Toyotas were delivered to Syria by our American and British colleagues themselves,” Zakharova said.

Golez: China building defense triangle at sea

user posted image

QUOTE
The triangle, according to Golez, would provide China with a first defense line that would prevent hostile forces from going to China through the South China Sea, and a second defense line through which its naval and air forces could cover the West Pacific to prevent the US 7th Fleet from coming to the aid of its allies in the region.

“Through Scarborough, China can deploy fighter planes and bombers over Borneo, Vietnam, the Philippines and Malaysia and employ an antiaccess, area denial strategy to prevent the 7th Fleet from going inside or going close. China can declare South China Sea an aerial defense identification zone,” Golez said.

He said China had built a killer missile, which could destroy any of America’s vaunted aircraft carriers.
