PLA's anti-satellite capabilities to be revealed in report

user posted image

A report to be published by the US-China Economic and Security Review Commission next month gives details of China's anti-satellite capabilities, senior editor of the Washington Free Beacon Bill Gertz wrote in the Washington Times on Oct. 14.

Two types of direct-ascent missiles known as the SC-19 and DN-2 are under development in China designed with the capability to destroy American satellites in both lower and higher orbits. While the DN-2 is designed to hit high-orbit targets such as global positioning satellites, Gertz said its primary purpose is more likely to destroy military satellites that are used for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance. The DN-2 is estimated to be deployed in the next five to 10 years.

The report also says the People's Liberation Army is pursuing counterspace capabilities including direct-ascent anti-satellite missiles, co-orbital anti-satellite systems, computer network operations, ground-based satellite jammers and directed energy weapons.

It also says China's nuclear arsenal also provides an inherent anti-satellite capability. Gertz said the electromagnetic pulse created by a nuclear detonation in low Earth orbit would severely damage unshielded satellites. China is able to paralyze US satellites with electronic ground-based jammers as well, the report indicates. One American satellite was temporarily disrupted by a high-powered laser fired by the PLA in 2006.

Gertz said Chinese hackers were probably behind several incidents involving US space assets, such as a satellite used by the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration that was hacked in September 2014. The report said the PLA plans to threaten US information superiority through taking over US satellites in a future conflict.

Combat report: Russia fighter jets hit 285 terror targets in Syria in past 3 days

user posted image

QUOTE
"Over the past three days, the warplanes of the Russian air group have carried out 164 sorties, hitting 285 targets,” Igor Konashenkov, a spokesman for the Ministry of Defense, said Monday.

QUOTE
Konashenkov said a large ammunition dump belonging to the Jabhat al-Nusra terror group has been destroyed in Syria’s Damascus province. The two metallic hangars were razed to the ground as munitions inside them detonated following a direct hit by a Russian bomber.

QUOTE
Su-25 attack jets have destroyed three fortified points of Islamic State terrorists near the village of Salma in the province of Latakia,” Konashenkov said. “The sites were equipped with bunkers, pillboxes and mortar positions.”

QUOTE
In Aleppo, the Russian planes bombed an Islamic State command center used by the terrorists to coordinate their actions against the Syrian Army units near the Quaires airport, the spokesman added. In the same region, an Islamic State base equipped with anti-aircraft guns, mortars and heavy machine guns was destroyed in an airstrike.

U.S. Blocks Korean Trainer Jet Sale to Uzbekistan

user posted image

Korea may have to scrap the lucrative sale of T-50 trainer jets to Uzbekistan due to U.S. opposition.

A government source on Friday said Korea Aerospace Industries had been in negotiations with the Uzbek government to sell 12 T-50s, but the U.S. government opposes the deal citing possible technology leaks and foreign-policy concerns.

The deal could have netted Korea some US$400 million.

But since KAI developed the T-50 with technological support from Lockheed Martin of the U.S., and most core equipment including avionics and engine are U.S.-designed. That means Seoul needs the nod from Washington if it is to sell them overseas.

Korea has already sold the T-50 to Indonesia, Iraq, the Philippines and Thailand.

But Uzbekistan is a murky dictatorship on ethnic lines and the U.S. is also worried that it could ratchet up tensions with neighboring countries if it bought the jets.

The Defense Ministry, Air Force and Defense Acquisition Program Administration were eager to export the T-50s to Uzbekistan. In May President Park Geun-hye and Uzbek President Islam Karimov discussed the issue during a meeting at Cheong Wa Dae, and in April the Uzbek defense minister visited Korea and signed a memorandum of understanding on military exchanges.

At the time he also sat in a T-50 simulator.

A KAI spokesman said, "The U.S. government did not approve the exports, but Uzbekistan still wants the delivery so we will try to convince Washington."

Egypt and US celebrate military joint tank production

user posted image

Egypt and the United States resume co-production of M1A1 Abrams Tanks in the Egyptian tanks factory outside Cairo on Sunday.

Resuming co-production manufacturing of M1A1 Abrams tanks is the most recent step taken by the U.S. government in partnership with Egypt, according to a US Embassy statement.

Manufacturing M1A1 in Egypt is part of the ongoing US security support for the Egyptian military to confront terrorism. The M1A1 Abrams is among the heaviest tanks in the world at 70 tons.

Egyptian Minister of Military Production Major General Mohamed Al-Assar, Senior U.S. Defense Official in Cairo Major General Charles Hooper, and other senior officials attended the ceremony.

As result of the manufacturing joint, several tank factories in Egypt were able to provide jobs for 2,500 Egyptians, relation will strengthen between both countries, and Egyptian Armed forces will enhance its capabilities to defend the country, the statement read.

The agreement between Egypt and US to resume the tank production was signed in October between Minister of State for Military Production Mohammed Al-Assar, US Ambassador in Cairo Robert Stephen Beecroft, , and VP of General Dynamics Donald Schenk, local news site Aswat Masriya reported.

For nearly three decades, Egypt and the United states have been working hard on growing their ties in the heavy industry sectors.

US security’s support Egypt ceased when the latter’s military ousted former Islamist president Mohamed Morsi from power but it resumed again in May when Egypt received its first batch of eight Lockheed Martin F-16 Block 52 fighter aircraft.

VOLUNTARY SELF-DEFENSE GROUPS FIGHTING ON THE SIDE OF THE SYRIAN GOVERNMENT

user posted image

There are multiple Syrian self-defense forces (i.e. separate from the Syrian Army) fighting as volunteers on the side of, but not part of, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA). In fact, there are more such groups than there were in Lebanon during the 1975-1990 civil war, and number perhaps 150,000 troops.

These groups are increasingly important due to losses sustained by the Syrian Army under immense pressure from terrorist groups financed and supported by multiple foreign governments.

In order to keep army personnel at the front and at the same time not lose ground in the rear, which is extremely difficult to do, such groups were originally involved with protecting roads and strategically important centers, and maintaining garrisons in re-occupied territories. Later they were used in operations.

Here is a list of some of these groups:

al-Mukavvama as-Suriyya (The Syrian Resistance) in the Latakia region. Headed by Turkish native Ali Kayali, on good terms with Kurdish leader leader of RPK Abdullah Ocalan. Active since 2011. Self-defined as a secular group that includes Alawites, Sunnis, and Christians, and has Shiite sympathies.

Liva ad-dir as-Sakhel (Shield of the Coast Brigade) provides protection of the Mediterranean coast of the country, first of all, Latakia and Tartus. Another Alawite group that coordinates actions with the government.

Kuvvat Ar-Rida (Reza Forces) military organization, organized from locals in Hama, Homs, and the capital region since summer 2013, when Hezbollah began active actions in the Syrian territory. Mostly Shia and some Sunni. Named in honor of the Shiite Imam Ali Reza. Should become the base of a future Hezbollah-like militia in Syria..

Liva as-Sayida Rukaya (Lady Rukaya’s Brigade) has purely Syrian Shiite membership and is named in honor of the daughter of Imam Hussein; her tomb in Syria is a shrine for Shiites from around the world.. Other Iraqi Shiite groups likewise affiliated are Abu Fadlya Abbas Brigade, Liva Zulfikar (Zulfikar Brigade), and Kataib Imam Ali (Battalion of Imam Ali).

Nusur az-zaubaa (Eagles of the Hurricane) participated in operations in Homs and protection the Vadi an-Nasar valley, occupied generally by Christians, and a lso helping local Druzes in Suveyd region. Syrian Christian militia associated with the Syrian Social and National Party (SSNP), founded in 1932 by the Lebanese Orthodox Christian Antun Saad with an ideological view of creating Greater Syria from Syria, Palestine, Lebanon, Iraq, Jordan, and Cyprus. Has counterbalanced pan-Arabism with the idea of Syrian nationalism. In addition to the Orthodox Christians, also includes Shiites, Sunnis, and Greek Catholic Christians.

There are also several Druze groups. They growth was especially accelerated in autumn 2014 when Jabhat an-Nusra militants executed and/or forcibly converted many in the Druze enclave around Idlib, which caused indignation

Dzheysh al-muvakhiddin (Army of supporters of monotheism) are active in the province of Suveyd occupied by Druzes. This group is composed of Druzes, allied since 2012 with the government of Syria. It has recently suffered fragmentation.

Dir al-vatan (Shield of the Homeland), in the same area, is the largest Druze group.

Ridzhal al-karama (Men of worthiness) also known as Kuvvat al-Fakhd (Strength of a leopard) was started in early 2014 under Sheik Balus, who was later assassinated. This group was somewhat tied in with pro-government groups, hoping for eventual autonomy within Syria.

Liva as-Sukur al-Kuneytra (Brigade of Falcons of Kuneytra) consisting of Druze and Sunnite natives of Kuneytra province. Had originally fought against both Islamist forces and the government, but went over to the government side after being invaded by Jabhat an-Nusra and ISIS.

Finally, there are several Palestinian refugee groups.

Liva al-Quds (Brigade of Jerusalem), founded 2013 and consisting of Palestinians numbering 3-4,000 who are natives of the Nayrah refugee camp near Aleppo, and engage in fierce battles near Aleppo. Not associated with Hamas.

Dzheysh at-Tahrir al-Falyastini (Liberation Army of Palestine), conducts operations generally in the region of Damascus and is associated with the Popular Front for Liberation of Palestine.

The militias protecting the government in Damascus, have already became an important factor in the political life of the country. Upon termination of the conflict, they will demand their share of power in the territories occupied with them or aspire to political influence throughout the country. This could make the process of political settlement in Syria more difficult.

Russian special forces sweep into Syria

user posted image

QUOTE
The special forces were pulled out of Ukraine and sent to Syria in a bid to coordinate with Iranian military advisers against rebels,” an anti-Assad rebel commander said.

The special forces, akin to a Delta Force, had been operating in pro-Russian rebels-held areas of Ukraine before being called off to Syria, a Russian official told the Wall Street Journal.

US worries Russia would cut undersea data cables in a conflict

user posted image

Many military commanders will tell you that it's wise to cut the enemy's lines of communication. However, the US is concerned that Russia may take this advice one step too far. The New York Times understands that Russia is positioning submarines and spy ships near hard-to-reach segments of undersea data cables, hinting that it might sever internet connections in the event of a conflict. As you might gather, that would create serious problems for the world as a whole, not just Russia's enemies. Depending on the line, a cut could disrupt internet access (and thus economies) in countries that wouldn't even be involved in the fight.

Whether or not it gets to that point isn't clear. Russia could be saber rattling, or looking for secret US military cables whose loss wouldn't be quite so catastrophic. Whatever the purpose, the fleet movements serve as a not-so-friendly reminder that the internet might be one of the first casualties if there's ever a large-scale war.

US operates submarines specially built to tap the undersea cable. Now Russian has a few ships getting near and they cry wolf.

well just "light" stealth fighter, internal weapon bay is small, but enough for some mission.
externally mounted weapon mainly for not stealth mission like like Air-to-Ground bombing, which already get Airpower control
