Just tried it. There's 3 pokemon detected around my neighbourhood. I went out, phone in hand, stood at nearest spot in front of neighbour's house, looking around like an idiot that I am and nothing happened. It feels silly and funny at the same time.
If places of prayer are pokestops and gyms, I wonder what will happen at the church my boss invites me to tomorrow. lol
