Anyone has experience setting up digital audio system for his or her car? What is the specification of your setup? I have been doing some research and market survey and found that there are only two broad options available to Malaysians. One is changing the CD player to one that can playback MP3, WMA are prevalent but the storage capacity is limited to the 700MB CD capacity while players with USB input can only access capacity of up 2gigs, regardless of whether you are plugging in a thumbdrive or a external harddisk with bigger storage capacity.
The second option is buying a digital car audio adaptor, which mainly support Ipod and none that can support an external harddisk. I hate Ipod but I want a setup which can easily link, access and playback over 20 or 30 GIG of digital music on compact portable digital storage device. Any suggestion, fellow Lyn audiophiles?

actually i thinking playing from such a large capacity external storage is a bit tedious. imagine looking for 1 particular song and you have to keep skipping until you find it. unless you find a quick way to access them you are going to find it difficult. i know cause i am playing from my Ipod.

just something to consider b4 you embark on this project. another thing also, 10gb of music is equales a lot of minutes of music. so i dun care where you drive in malaysia, you are will reach your destination b4 all your songs are played

what is a hu? if you are talking about hooking a portable harddisk to a CD player with USB input, I have already stated that this setup will still be limited to 2GIG, regardless of the capacity of the harddisk that you hook up. the CD player simply won't access any data beyond the 2GIG limit.

u can add a 20G 2.5 HDD for ur HU
but everytime u ignite ur car
u need to search the song all over again
unlike MP3 disc which can stay at where it stops

some HUs come with built in HD
can't remember which but they cost a bomb

but when car move on an uneven road.. it might damange the hdd rite? .. especially so many loophole on the road and bad repairing..

Head Unit... a player that u install in da car..

ok, now that I know what HU stands for, I can proceed to ask this; when you said "add a 20G hdd to Head Unit"? do you mean plugging in a normal USB portable computer 2.5 HDD into the USB input on the Head Unit? I have already said that it doesn't work because most Head Unit will only access capacity of up to 2gig. anything beyond is simply not readable by the Unit. do you have a setup or head unit that is capable of accessing the full capacity of any drive that you plug in?

in response to the point raised that it is not necessary and impractical to link up to over 20gig collection of digital music and bring them on the road, I would say my goal is no less different from people who use Ipod to store their collection of digital music and bring them to whenever they go. My intention is to obtain quick and instant access to your music collection. I can choose to play different playlists according to my mood or simply put the entire collection on shuffle playback and be able to enjoy a radio-like broadcast of music that suit my taste. that's what portable music playback is all about and I can't believe I have to justify this in this forum.

Get a DVD head unit and burn 4Gig of mp3.

use a hu with aux in..then buy a hdd player

@howiechoo,

what is a HDD player? are you talking portable player like IPOD and connecting it to the HU via an adaptor that is permanently plugged in the AUX IN?

or from my Ipod

for 20g to 30g without an ipod..

u can be the 1st

mayb u can add a preamp
then use the RCA input..
no need depend on the HU with the 2GB limitation
