other countries mostly use gsm band like ours except canada and north america.. but for japan, they mostly use cdma..

if u think to buy a phone here and bring it to use there.. then i suggest u go there only buy, coz the phone in there is way cheaper.. (if u going to stay long term there)

But even 3G phones need to use GSM network for normal voice calls, and that is why I want to make sure the bands are supported, I tried looking at GSM World website but can't find any information regarding the GSM frequency band.

UMTS, GSM and CDMA is all of different league..

however vodafone japan did use gsm 900, 1800 and 1900.. example are vodafone gsm sharp phone is from japan and europe vodafone..

gsm 850 is rarely used unless u want to go to north america or canada...

Would a Sharp 903sh unlocked phone that ppl here are using considered GSM band phone ?

yes sharp 903sh is using gsm band..

if u stay there for long term, then consider buying a phone there.. instead of bringing one from here.. if short term, then just bare wit the hefty roaming price..

My unlocked Vodafone Sharp works fine in Malaysia with any local SIM.  flex.gif Trust *ME* and a hundred others!  rclxm9.gif    If interested, please see long-running Sharp Toshiba SE Vodafone threads in specific handphones sub-category.

ya but mostly nowadays those vodafone sharp and toshiba came from vodafone europe.. sharp and toshiba made in japan (maybe) for marketing into/in collaboration with vodafone europe.. and europe is full of gsm.. lesser and lesser gsm/umts phone is made for japan..

Alamak, hope you guyz read smthg besides own msgs!  For all answers, just LOOK at the Vodafone discussions here in LYN under Phone Specific Discussion.  icon_idea.gif  AFAIK all Vf Sharps are made in JPN, and can easily buy in BKK SIN HKG TPE but not KL (except LYN garage sales!)

Within last couple of weeks Sb (ex-Vf) announced several new Sharp models with UMTS, and it is mentioned on other forums that all new Docomos will be UMTS enabled.  See pix and specs on Softbank.co.jp

Unfortunately, they will probably be locked to Sb with hardwired circuitry, not software.

i see.. i learnt something now.. thanks.. i know they are made in japan.. but i wonder they still use it in japan or just for marketing out of japan.. sharp vodafone is huge in here UK..

what i try to mean is if the outcoming model is for japan marketing or just sharp make for vodafone but marketed out of japan.. like sharp gx series and toshiba, i wondered they are used in japan cos most of them i saw in vodafone europe market.. exception 904sh? 910sh?
