As we are waiting for the result of Supermarket Sweep Campaign, apparently Maybank has conducted the Supermarket Sweep for 5 Grand Prize Winners at AEON Quill City Mall, Kuala Lumpur, today.

Why didn't Maybank announce the exact date of Supermarket Sweep? Yeah, I am not one of Grand Prize Winners, but I would like to be there to feel the excitement of "Shop till you drop" environment as an audience. Too bad, I missed the event. sad.gif

Was anyone of you all aware of the exact date of Supermarket Sweep? hmm.gif

New signup get free gift. I saw transformer figurine. Should cost more than RM200 for that figurine. Have other gift as well

They are agents from another company which collects and send all credit card applications to Maybank to obtain commission, right?

In my opinion, the true Maybank employees who assists customers in applying for credit cards, would not offer such Transformer figurine as a free gift.

I did make an extensive research on this topic last time.

And the reply I received from global governing body ( Visa / Master ) is the same.

There should NOT be any surcharges.

It's also stated in the terminal rental agreement.

Customers are not to be charged with the surcharge.

So go ahead and be anal. Complaint non-stop until they refund you.

I received a refund before due to this surcharge by a camera shop.

I asked some merchants before the reasons why they do not accept American Express credit cards.

They said that the acquirer bank imposes a minimum total transaction amount that must be achieved in a month. If the amount paid by all customers using American Express credit cards in a month is less than the so-called minimum amount, the acquirer bank will impose a hefty fee on the merchants.

I am unsure how true their claim is. To be exact, who exactly imposes minimum total transaction amount in a month? Is it acquirer bank, Maybank (acting as exclusive acquirer of American Express in Malaysia), or American Express Company (in US)?

Who is telling the truth, and who is telling the lies?

If Visa and MasterCard do not impose any restrictive rules (imposing surchange) in the credit card terminal, then perhaps American Express does not impose such restrictive rules as well.

You are correct, babienn. The transaction fee imposed by American Express was higher than that of Visa and MasterCard. This is one of many reasons why merchants do not accept American Express credit cards, other than the reason of the so-called minimum amount to be transacted in a month.

But, it was no longer applicable, since Payment Card Reform Framework was fully implemented by Bank Negara, effective 1 July 2015. With that, the interchange fee for all credit cards (American Express, Visa and MasterCard) is capped similarly at 1.1 %, and will progressively be reduced in the future.

Last time, you reported that Visa and MasterCard do not impose minimum transaction amount. In other words, by right, we are allowed to swipe our Visa and MasterCard credit cards, to pay for any amounts, including RM 1 as well.

The thing is that some merchants will refuse to accept credit card payments, if the transaction amount does not exceed a certain amount (says RM 30, RM 50, or so on). Who is the one that originally imposes this silly rule? Is it the merchant, acquirer bank, or Visa / MasterCard?

I could be wrong, but I do not think that American Express also does not impose minimum transaction amount.

Between these three parties:
- merchant
- acquirer bank
- American Express, Visa and MasterCard (the credit card network)

There is at least one party who does not tell the truth, and continues to mislead customers like us. Nevertheless, it will impede the vision of Bank Negara, to promote more cashless transactions.

depends on personal usage. the amex card is still good to go for 'others' expenses to get 1.25% cashback.

I use Maybank 2 Card Amex as a general purpose credit card, in order to determine the MCC.

If the MCC of transactions is really the eligible MCC for grocery, mobile, dining or so on, I will use other credit cards that give cashback, for subsequent transactions. smile.gif

either call CS or trial and error

alexanderclz is correct. Call CS to get the MCC, after you swipe Maybank 2 Card. I do not prefer trial and error, though.
