Hi all.

I'll be traveling to Seoul in Jan 19-23. I have a few questions:

1. How's the situation in Seoul these days after the incident with NK? Safe to travel right?
2. Winter clothing: What are the essential clothings I need for this? I have some light jackets for my previous travel but don't think can withstand Seoul cold weather? Any advise? Should I buy the jacket in Seoul or just buy it off here from Malaysia? Where to get cheap and awesome winter clothing in M'sia and Seoul?
3. Do they have a train pass for 4 days of travel?

Good place to visit if you're interested on the local life.
1. It's safe, my seonsaengnim says the newspapers there are just blowing things out of propotion, it isn't THAT big of an issue yet.
2. Buy in Seoul.
3. Use T-Money. smile.gif

It's okay if you have something to wear first to resist the coldness in Jan,
otherwise it's advisable to buy it here. Still need some good time shopping around namdeamun or other market
*
Thanks for the info guys. How cheap is the jacket there btw?

uhh.. i think anyone with their right mind would probably wear several layers of clothes underneath their jacket if its not thick enough... it'll be enough to get them through until they get a proper jacket in seoul.
*
Good idea, Noodl35! I've already have a few jackets with me, so I can definitely layer it up and for the next day, get a proper jacket when I'm there. Most importantly I need jacket for skiing time. Is it still gonna be cheap?

Btw, I have booked a place called Seoulwise Guesthouse located near Hongik University stop. It costs me 18000 won/RM50 each person for mixed dorm room. They provide free wifi and breakfast. Has anyone been here?

From google earth, I found that is only around 0.5 Kilometre walk from Hongik University station, so perhaps it takes only a 5mins walk to Seoulwise Guesthouse smile.gif
Should be quite a good place to stay with reasonable price smile.gif

Now that's a good relief! flex.gif

Man..I hope my 4 days trip can cover a good time ski-ing, outdoor ice skating and shopping. I heard its super cheap to skate there.

QUOTE(badzvino @ Dec 12 2010, 02:24 PM)
Hi guys, I'm planning to have a family trip to korea next year Febuary during Chinese New Year period.
Heard that it's going to be very very cold and probably snowing.

I would like to ask what should I wear during this kind of weather?

I went to those travel equipments shop asked, they said I must wear something like this,
[attachmentid=1934099]
they said this is for outdoor and indoor, water resistant and wind blocker. But all those shop like Universal Travellers, etc are not selling any good looking coat. And they are killing expensive, over RM500 minimum.

I always saw in korea drama they wear coat like this [attachmentid=1934102],
but the salesman said this is only for indoor, is it true??

I google around and I saw a lot of taiwan and china selling winter coat are cheap, would like to know are those reliable? most importantly those are cheap and very nice looking coat!

So my question would be:
1. Which type of coat should I get? I really like the second type  wub.gif
2. Where can I get these coat except travel shops like Universal Traveller? I feel that their price is expensive and not good looking coat, found few coat which are also in the price range of RM500-700 but their are mostly second type, in Uniqlo, Pull&Bear and Topshop etc.
3. Anywhere here in Kuala Lumpur I can buy those china brand one? Found no shop selling around bkt bingtang shopping mall. I feel that they are cheaper and more fashionable.

notworthy.gif Sorry for the messy post, never travel to winter country before  blush.gif

I bought something like this in F.O.S, Sg Wang last weekend and it costs only RM160. Too bad, I bought the last one there but there were also another almost similar jacket sold there was from GAP brand costs RM190..still alright actually. I seriously recommend everyone to pay a visit to ANY F.O.S and also Sox World if you want to look for a good price. If you're lucky, you'll found a very trendy looking jacket (in F.O.S) and good, funky looking scarves and gloves.

Winter gears:
1)Down Jacket (jacket in the picture. Google image 'down jacket' for better description
2)Long John (pretty much thermal underwear; top to bottom)
3)Hand glove (water proof is awesome if you go to ski resort)
4)Scarf and sweater hat/ear warmers
5)Face mask. (To moisture and warm up your nostril and lips)
6)Lip balm and moisturiser lotion.
7)Sports shoe should be fine for just few days tour
8) Sunglasses if go Ski resort.

QUOTE(sfwong1 @ Dec 12 2010, 03:47 PM)
actually u can try uniqlo if u don like all the universal traveler, winter time shop, cos i bought a down from UT,regretted after i pay a visit to uniqlo, that time still sales,i compare price uniqlo about rm100 cheaper than UT down jacket, somemore uniqlo looks nicer and lighter. I bought my down from UT for about rm359 like that uniqlo only rm259,i know its still expensive cos that time i donno where else can find really cheap one.
*
I went to Uniqlo last week and am not so thrilled with the prices though. I don't fancy their down jacket, I think it's still TOO expensive. Although I bought fleece jacket for RM59.90 (my guy friend bought his at RM79.90, the reversible type), their thermal heat tech top for RM59.90 and a set of sweat outfit for sleep time (but don't recommend it).

My 2 cents of Uniqlo

BUY:
1) Thermal undergarments - heat tech top long sleeve. Bottom pants sold out already: RM59.90
2) Fleece jacket: RM79.90. Still so-so on the price.

DON'T BUY:

1) Down jacket: If you're loaded, then go here. Otherwise, FOS has more trendy and cheaper option. You can even found GAP stuff there.
2) Accessories: Wool hats, leg warmers, ear warmers...just plain boring and expensive. Go to Forevor 21 or SoxWorld much better doh.gif

If there are any winter warehouse sales happening this time around, that would be my most top pick. Damn, earlier this year, I saw Colors of Benetton down jacket selling for RM99.90. Faints.

Found something in MySimplifieds http://www.mysimplifieds.com/list/fashion/...CFUd76wod-kEc1A

Added on December 12, 2010, 3:18 pmOwh maaaaaaann! Uniqlo just started this sale two days back. I bought mine last week for RM59.90 doh.gif

It's called Buff http://www.buff.es/es/ESP. Always wanted to buy that. They sell it in an optical shop called Peak Vision (3rd floor) Garden's Midvalley. It costs around RM80 and above. You can wear it many ways - on your head, scarves, even tube top (if you're a petite). Hmm...now's a good time to buy hmm.gif

Yeap. Just bought one last week. The RM49.90 is just for the top, not set. I don't think you need another one, unless if you're staying there longer. Even if you stay longer, I think its cheap to buy in Korea for the second one

Hi,

I have a few questions I hope you guys can help for my 4 days trip in South Korea this January.

1. I usually eat a proper meal during dinner when I travel. What is the best, must- eat seafood/veggie dinner delicacies? I heard steamboat is quite famous there.

2. Must-have desserts?

3. Is 20,000 won/per person for 4-bed mixed dormitory considered cheap?

4. I will be staying in Donggyo-dong area. What is the closest ski area from there? I wanna spend 1 day for skiing, snowboard, snow sleigh (beginner).

5. What is the best outdoor ski area around Seoul? I saw in reviews that ski rental only cost 5,000 krw.

6. How many layers of bottom (pants) to wear? What to wear for bottom? I heard jeans is a no-no.

Really good info, Boon! Thank you so much! notworthy.gif

I was thinking of just wearing my sports shoes for my 4 days trip. Would this be sufficient for Jan's winter weather?

QUOTE(b00n @ Dec 16 2010, 04:28 PM)
You can go shop for a book on South Korea which introduce food.
But generally during winter, it's hotplates or stonebowl, grill meat and ginseng soup/chicken.
It all depends on what you want. If you are the adventurous type, you can even try whatever you encounter. Like for me and my wife, we just popped into a shop and viola, we got 2 cold ramen with grill beef for the price of 10,000won. Look at my food pic compilation, upper left and bottom left which shows it's real chunk of ice - i.e. ice ramen. Taste quite good!
There's also lots of stalls selling the normal fried thingy or some like "lok-lok" which is mostly fishball and tofu.
As for dessert, there's actually lots of bakeries around with superb aromas on their pastry and nice cakes.

I think ok as mine is RM60,000 won for a double room, i.e. 30,000 won per person.

Ski resort, am not sure as we didn't manage to go as we spent to much time in Nami Island and visited Chuncheon's town instead in the evening and have the Chicken Galbi (Chuncheon dak galbi) at Myeong-dong. http://english.visitkorea.or.kr/enu/SI/SI_....jsp?cid=506808

Depending on how well you can take the cold. Most of the time, I wore only a long-john pant inside with a jean outside. You'll be surprised the ladies there only wear leggings! IMO, a good wool socks would help a lot as the cold starts from the feet. The better deal is to just wear long-john and
jeans and of course a good down jacket then spend the 1st day shopping for winter clothing here. More variety and more practical. Uniqlo has nice varieties here and not that expensive also. There's also more fashionable longjohn here then the usual white color one sold in M'sia.

I got my cheap AA return tix for RM337 each including tax + convenience fee + food + luggage (going back only) during the opening sale last August. In my opinion, if you are willing to wait for another AA sale, you can get a better price. RM700 is still alright...

QUOTE(sophistafunk @ Dec 18 2010, 04:34 PM)
Hello! We'll be going to South Korea in end Feb to early March. After researching, winter in Korea will last till end March so I suppose we still need to prepare winter clothings. With all the info given in this forum, I know where to get them, thanks smile.gif

Now the part I'm concerned is the transport after arriving Incheon airport. Since arrival time is 915pm Seoul time, most likely we gonna miss the limo bus because the last schedule is at 10pm. If I take AREX train to Gimpo for MRT, it's fruitless since stimix stated it'll be too late anyway. Does that mean the only way to Seoul is by taxi? We're on a budget so having public transport is preferred than taxis sad.gif

Another thing; we'll be arriving on 27 Feb which is Sunday night. I plan to buy winter jacket, boots from Namdaemum and perhaps Itaewon (for bigger sizing on clothes and boots) on the night itself but I read that the open market is closed on Sundays - is this true???? And Itaewon will not open till late right? So, any other markets or places to get winter stuff at the late hour (11pm-2am) ?

Thanks smile.gif

Lol! I think it's the matter of preference at the end, but I do agree of the idea of "blending in with the crowd" to avoid looking tourist-y. I guess the stripe thing is just a crazy side of me trying to 'scream' apart from the monochrome. I do get some stares when I wore it in Tokyo and Melbourne though, but it looks good in the pics tongue.gif . Thanks for the heads up, will consider toning it down to deeper color hmm.gif

Here one of typical subway scene I captured..check the common dressing. Those wth dark stocking wth skirt or pants can be seen too but also odd:

I wonder how much Forever 21 would costs there in Seoul since the founders are South Korean themselves. I guess Namdaemun sounds like a place for stingy-tourist girl like me. LOL!

Noted that. I wonder how cold will it be like in Seoul area. I don't think I have the time to cover places outside Seoul, other than the ski resort.

Here is my basic 4 days itinerary. Pls comment notworthy.gif
19 reach seoul at 9.15pm, stroll, sleep
20 stroll seoul, winter gear, stroll, outdoor ice skating
21 full day skiing, sleighing
22 stroll, shopping
23 last minute shopping before 11pm flight
24 reach malaysia at 5.05 am, prepare to go to work

Will my two yrs Nokia N82 be useful during the cold winter? I might need to use my Garmin for it. If not, I guess I've to get maps then. hmm.gif

QUOTE(stimix @ Dec 18 2010, 07:56 PM)
You can cover the stripe stocking wth normal jean. Very useful when temperature drop below -10C. At this temp long john or either the thermal stocking together wth jean/ pant for sure protect you from shivering cold. From 1st till 4th day there, I dun wear any Long johns just a t-shirt & On 1st till 3rd nite it was OK as temp avg -3 to 6C However my problem when I was at Nami Island when temp on that day dropped to avg -7C.. I really can feel the cold air sipping through my jean abd also the lousy glove that I hv. Although the down jacket is working well protecting my body but not my leg & fingers..The buff doing well protecting mouth, neck & ear.

So on the 5th day, I wear my lomng john, and sweater + wool sock for the 1st time..pheww... now much comfortable...feel warm at -10C and even the strong windchill of -20C on the Morning at hangang park. Only when I started to take out the glove & the buff for picture taking..darn the -20C really killing my fingers & ears.. blush.gif

Added on December 18, 2010, 7:02 pmWell, I'm also not really into those things but I did check Uniglo pricing in KL & Korea..NOT MUCH DIFF..just abit cheaper in Korea bcos their currency currently very low.. biggrin.gif  For eg..The super light weight down jacket- KL =RM299 but in Korea = 99,000won so after converting at 2.85 if u can get this rate in KL, the price in Korea is RM285.. just RM14 cheaper than Korea. If the rate >RM3, forget getting it in Korea liao  biggrin.gif

For cosmestics, since I went windows shopping to get the free samples, I did check few there..Avg 1 pc of facial mask =3000 won but there are few less popular brand such as missy or Nature replublic (Hopefully I can recall) selling at 1,000 won per pc...I was..wow I though in KL only ~RM1 per pc??

LOL! This is just a basic itinerary, will definitely do a lot of strolling/visiting than ice skating. Yeah, my partner and I are avid skaters, but we probably ice skate for just a couple of hours.

Aha 2nd time to SK...My wife also asking me for 2nd winter trip haha.

BTW, the walk from AREX to Gimpo is actually pretty far. and the whole airport also close very early. abit scary.

Namdaemun market on Sunday is not fully close on Sunday, I was having my 1st breakfast on last Sunday and I saw stores started to open ~ 9AM..well probably not all open-lah. but one thing for sure..money changers closed on Sunday

BTW, the 10,000won lightweight winter boot I saw at Myeongdong, days later, I saw another wholesales style shop at Namdaemun selling it at 6900won only.
