Ya the cosmetic sellers in myeongdong mostly can speak chinese and japanese. But the thing i love bout korea is that korean are the most friendly and helpful people i ever met...there are several times people come over to us and offer to help when they see us looking at the map. When i was in everland, I used up all my cash accidentally and got enough money to take the bus and subway home to seoul (i left my t-money card in the room that day )...i have no usd to change with the locals too, so last choice i borrowed money from a waiter, i just need 1000won and after explaining my situation to him, he and his fren gave me 2000won, i wanted to give them rm6 but they don't want it, just took rm2 from me as a souvenir...really touched

Here is a tip when you want to ask for direction in Seoul.

Preferably, choose a working class young male to ask for direction.  Why ? Because the possibility of communication in English is better, they are more friendly towards foreigners and 9 out of 10 will flash out their GPS enabled cellphone to assist you.

Aiyoo.....no need to write la. Use your camera lor...just aim your camera at your LCD screen and copy ma.  Example if you plan to go to Nami island just take a picture of the below and show it when you want to ask direction, buy train ticket, show it to the taxi or bus driver, etc etc.

I'm renting phone too when i'm travel to korea..
first i reserve with KT using KTO website..and i got all the details include the Korea's phone number 3 days before i depart to Korea..
I think KT will be more affordable with all the benefit and the fees quiet cheaper around 1800won per day.
But, unfortunately when I arrive at the booth around 10PM and the counter already closed. Beside KT booth got SK Telekom booth and still opening. Because we in rushing state we decide to rent SK phone. So, luckily i print out brochure for SK Telecom where I entitle for 50% discount  for daily fees. So, from 3000Won per day i got 1500Won per day.

Once you rent the phone it give you postpaid type. I'm not so sure if prepaid available.
So, for 6 days in Korea and i'm using my phone mostly to contact 1330 number and my usage around 24000Won + 9000won (daily fees) = 33000Won. 
I think for rate u can refer website. you must have credit card for rent the telephone.

I'm not sure your existent phone compatible with korea sim card. so, when you renting phone it give you phone + sim card.

Btw, for backpacker traveler 1330 number really helpful and useful.

Just back from Seoul this morning, now still at lcct waiting for another flights home. It's been 3 hectic day 7am - 11pm own trip. Tired but satisfied
