Most apps i use won't make use of the extra cores. It will be a waste of money & electricity. Intel 53XX chips ain't cheap. Until I found afordable offer, I won't touch the proc for now.
But it's good that it is upgradable for another generation. |

QUOTE(MacDaNife @ Nov 17 2006, 07:21 PM) FB Dimms have only one MAJOR downside: price.... together with power consumption and latency |

QUOTE(BeastX @ Nov 17 2006, 08:19 PM) While you've obviously read up on your Anand... ... it's actually rather difficult to get into a situation where latency actually impedes performance. The point most memory articles make when considering memory for the MacPro tends to get lost in the details: there is a latency penalty with more than 4 memory modules i.e. there is a performance deficit to running octo-channel (8 slots populated) but there is performance benefit to running quad-channel (4-slots populated). This much said and done: it's hard to see a real-world difference. On the point of power consumption and the need for the big-and beefy heatsink remains unresolved. Many (Wei included) are running FBDIMMs without the large heatsink with no adverse results. I prefer to err on the side of caution and have the heatsinks on. So I stand by my prior post: other than price, FBDIMMs provide much greater bandwidth than DDR2. You just have to run quad-channel to take advantage of this and try not to go beyond 4 sticks. |
