scholars have an enormous amount of taxpayers' money spent on them, and they have a moral and legal duty to fulfill their commitments to serve the people and country upon graduation...jpa MUST not allow them to be released....

scholars can of course pay up the penalty in full, and thus be free men and women.....then they co go do whatever they want...wherever they want...

otherwise....keep your word, fulfill your promise...don't ask for release or deferment....

I think for medicine, if you are family funded - don't do it or at least do it locally.
course is too expensive and returns is no good.
at the end of the day if you really want to be a doctor, it does not matter where you go, you will be a good doctor.
UMS sabah is a jewel - nice state, nice people, very very very good exposure and again at the end of the day, it is kkm recognised,
and realistically in medicine when your career really starts off is when you start working, not where you graduate from.

I agree with you on that, and it also applies to other disciplines like engineering, law, etc.

But.. when you want to purse a postgrad qualification like MRCS/MRCP.. then you realised your undergrad qualification in malaysia is unrecognised..
dreams go down the drain..
So in the end, it depends what you want to specialise in and where do you want to work.

if you only want to work in msia, it matters not where you graduate from as long as it is recognised, and the mmc recognises more than 300 med schools...even if not recognised, you can sit for the qualifying exam, unlimited times (in the past)...

if you want to work elsewhere, then which med school you graduate from is absolutely important, as most countries are not as lax as msia...and are very careful whom they allow to be given the license to kill...

As far as the feedback from my relative is concerned, those from dubious universities in Russia, Mid East, Indonesia and some local universities have a tough time initially and will find excuses to "avoid" seeing patients for fear of being scolded for lack of skills and knowledge. And to make it worse, a majority of specialists dont like graduates from such universities.

The fact is in the first few days, the housemen are asked where do they graduate from.....and rightly or wrongly, the perception is there...unless you prove yourself.

Like it or not, those from UM are treated differently.

Relative's friend who's in final year Monash Clayton decided to do his electives in one of the GHs, and echoed what has been said by all of late, that MOs, and consultants alike tend to scold a lot, very sarcastic and seem to be a frustrated lot. Needless to say, has learned nothing, apart from getting acquainted with the negatives. I worry for our public health services. Relative is relieved he decided against doing his elective here.

Nothing wrong with elective in malaysia.
If you are interested in practical skills, really textbook stuff, malaysia is the place.
If you want to work in malaysia, do elective your here.
If you want to be a famous doctor, ok then do your phd, stuff overseas.

Most wanna be doctors want to learn overseas and come back to malaysia and go straight to private practice and make money.
That is so, so wrong.
Anywhere in the world, doctors pay is rubbish for the ammount of responsibility and time invested.
