lucky you thumbup.gif going down to lowyat later to get the keycap puller, can't imagine pulling the rest of the keys using the copper wire sweat.gif
*
standard keycap puller i find can break quite fast from frequent usage.

filco keypuller seems more reliable even after heavy use.

QUOTE(wyncent911203 @ Aug 21 2015, 12:16 PM)
how about the dust in the keyboard? how do u remove them when they stick at the base?
*
this is why is better to get a metal backplate (preferably aluminium , rather than printed pcb direct to the switches) because makes cleanup easier.

normally i'd use like a earbud tip, slightly wet cloth, or a micro size flat head screw driver and some cleaning solution to clean out my mkb tongue.gif

keycaps i'll dump into a bucket of water with cleaning solution.

i'd try to be very careful as not to get the pcb wet when cleaning the metal backplate part of the mkb, but just in case i leave the mkb to dry out before i even dare plug it in

don't do it too often cause, removing the caps too much makes them loose i would reckon hmm.gif

for a standard mkb that uses silk-screened keycaps, the printing can wear off with use. i use instead dye sublimated and double shots, so i don't have this problem. secondary issue is the plastic itself, from constant usage when finger tips brush against the key, it can over time create a shiny oily look especially the spacebar.

my ducky pbt spacebar does not have this issue even after years of usage :}

theres a chart here for chemical resistance for these plastic types
http://www2.ulprospector.com/resources/pla...-resistance.asp

obviously you wouldn't use something too strong that would harm it smile.gif

Yes, ABS is pretty weak.
I blew hot air to ABS keycaps(for adjusting bent keycaps), they melt easily and you can throw your keycaps into dustbin right away.
I blew hot air to PBT keycaps, no problem.

o no no.

i definitely don't use something as hot as a hair drier or similar. i just use a regular fan smile.gif and a dry cloth.

the backplate is this metalic partition to separate the switch stubs from the actual pcb on the otherside.

this makes cleaning up dust or other gunk from the backplate, rather than the pcb (which is not good to mess with directly for the obvious reasons laugh.gif )

spilt drinks is another story rolleyes.gif

pcb mounted looks something like this

i see i see, can we install the metal backplate into filco keyboards? but when u do the cleaning job, u will have to remove all the switches to clean the metal plate? doesnt it seems more complicated?  blink.gif  blink.gif
*
nah just removing keycaps is enough. then just clean the backplate while it's still attached to the switches.

i'm not confident enough i could fully dissasemble/reassemble sweat.gif

Affordable gaming mechanical keyboard roundup

*disclaimer:
their missing some brands like filco, ducky..... i don't think you need to have lots of bling and macro to qualify as a gaming keyboard. just having mechanical switches should be enough. Even ducky has some multimedia shortcut capability as well, like disabling windows keys for example.

but if you really want to nitpick, then yeah a mkb with macro may be more gamer oriented, if that is something you actually use. personally i don't rolleyes.gif

Thank you. Honestly, I don't know much about mechanical keyboards. That's why I went with the Blackwidow Tournament Edition as it is small (lack of space on my table cause I play FPS games and I take it seriously so I need a bigger space for my mouse compared to keyboard) and I have friends who used this for a year and had no problems with it.

Looking forward to be active in this thread and learn more about mechanical keyboards.  biggrin.gif

doubt you'd go back rubberdome once you got a taste of mech keyboard smile.gif their very addicting once you get use to it.

hide your collection in closet or something. i too also got an extra mkb (i probably didn't needed), but mine is a cherrp corp rare vintage double shot which i keep just for collection. use it rarely every now and then when i need a separate keyboard smile.gif I also got like 2 extra sets of keycaps, and a keychain for colored signature plastic plastic color samples.

if anything i recommend some accessories worth getting (as you'll get more actual practical usage out of them)
- filco key puller (this i find is the most reliable, since it doesn't break, also easy to use)
- palm rest (especially if your mkb doesn't have one already. Otherwise when typing, your hand will have to manually elevate when typing)
- double shot keycaps (the contrast quality is so good, aside from the fact their very durable.)

PS: here is a mkb buyers guide for 2015

Problem is the Razer Blackwidow comes with a slight curved edge, not like a flat surface. That's why. I'm wondering if there's any 3rd party wrist rest. Maybe one that you can just put closely with the laptop. Since it's a mechanical keyboard, doubt it would move much. Pretty heavy anyways. hmm.gif
*
from my experience, the palm rest you want
1. heavy or something that won't shift while your resting palm when typing.
2. i'm more biased to something soft and rubbery like leather, rather than metalic or wood hard surfaces. since they are more comfortable to rest on.
3. prior to using wrist rest and mechanical keyboard my hands use to hurt alot when typing. but no longer for 5 years+ ongoing, so to me it is very effective smile.gif

i like the leather palm rest. mine was a ducky but after a few years of use, the chaffing eventually separated the pads holding the thin metalic plate in between.

a more durable wrist rest would be like the wooden one i see some use. but i'm doubtful wood will be as comfortable as leather :/

PS: you want a wrist rest that won't slide too much.

damn good board, i can feel my typing speed boost slightly due to the quicker debounce lol

EDIT: the lack of click from my previous Blues are quite jarring but the tactile-ness remains

not to mention, its now a dull "clock" instead of the more sharp click

Any idea how to remove the blue painted legend on the keycap?  Can i use nail polisher without damaging it? It's a POM keycool keycap
*
not really sure how to handle POM material. But from what i understand, side stuff like this tend to use silk screen printing, meaning can easily rub off yes using something like polisher.

would a sand paper better at leaving less scratches on it though?

@justnits

very nice group buy you got going there.

Yeah i seen that sort of look in one of our mkb gatherings. looked very good, but this options even much better. I recommend this group buy if anyone especially newbie who doesn't have a MKB yet to take advantage of it get a good custom mkb.

Can always ask advise in this thread for the options if not sure what to choose nod.gif

it's a TKL.

gateron is a cherry mx compatible or clone. there will be minor difference if compared with cherry's.

but here's what i can say about gateron's linear switch which i have been using.

gateron linear beats cherry linear in terms of smoothness.
the spring feeling might varies for some, as in some might be ok with gateron's switch spring, some might prefer cherry's switch spring.

for example, i love cherry mx blue's spring on my linear. i have 60g korean springs which i haven't tested yet.

at the moment, gateron linear with cherry mx blue spring is the ideal configuration for me.
if you just want to compare quality, cherry still comes up top but gateron is only a fraction behind.
*
QUOTE(Oyaji @ Dec 23 2015, 04:58 PM)
Guys, whats the difference between cherry mx 2.0 and 3.0? Is it better than ducky zero quality wise?
*
i don't know....

only tried cherry mx red, blue, brown, black, green, grey... and a classic cherry mx black.

things people will look at though is

1. Latency, meaning a lower latency meaning it actuate the key on press faster. If it does then thats a win for gamers and anyone in general in terms of responsiveness.

2. actuation specs. how much force is needed to press down on the key to actuate? there is a figure for actuation force, so can use that as a comparison. higher actuation forces usually would mean more fatigue when typing over long periods. but if your a muscle builder, you may prefer the stronger actuation force perhaps? lelz.....

3. linear, tactile, or clicky? gamers tend to go with linear for less resistance which probably translates as better latency. clicky for people like that quirky typist noise effect. tactile for typists that like that feedback on actuating a key as double confirmation when a key has been actuated. Personally i don't find issues with cherry mx brown tactile for gaming, but a pro gamer might disagree smile.gif

4. if you get that switch, will your previous keycaps or any custom keycaps be compatible with it? Will suck if you get stuck on a specific mechanical switch which doesn't support other keycaps due to a different in the stem used. But if you using the default keycap and not switching, then that is probably a non issue. I though use doubleshots and dye sublimated keycaps from cherry corp mx switches, so i need to stick with that for compatibility sake.

5. other factors like topre that is a hybrid capactive and mechanical switch. it has a unique feel that produces a near silent typing compared to a mx cherry switch keyboard. so you need to examine unique things like this that is distintive to the switch your looking at as a comparison as well.

if anyone else can think of anything missed out for switch comparison just add on :}
