Any website that can tell meaning of a given name or teach how to give Chinese names?

I search Google and alot of website is from English ppl who basically doesn't know much about Chinese culture but pretend to be expert.

Recently my bro got baby and give a very funny name to the kid. I worry next time I will have to follow the name he give for my baby and will also sound funny. We are not Chinese educated so I thought maybe he just simply give by thinking it sounds cool but I would like to give a name that has good meaning.

Now since he already choose the middle I guess the tradition us to follow the middle and I can only choose the last name. But the middle he give very funny le.

Please dun ask me wat the name as he is on this forum later know I think he give funny name will be trouble.

If you are a bananaman, a Chinese name that have meaning you will feel funny.
And by typing English on the web, sure won't give you the result you want.

Usually only right 10-20%. As you need to combine the 3 words together.

I assume you understand chinese.
我个人认为名字是由字组成,而不是词. 张学友有意思吗?孙中山有意思吗?
除了个别的字有你要的意思,或好的意思,最重要是顺口.

Here, the late China important person's name. And the meaning behind of his name.
Both of the words(center and mountain) are a strong word if were to use on a person's name. This same goes to sky, people.

Y worry about the middle name? Try to "not follow" the rules, who knows, mayb is ok. If still being force to follow, you may play around with different slength of cantonese/mandarin/hokkien/hakka.. watever that can give a better sound.

I let my PIL get sifu to tailor the name based on date of birth. But the name they given us.. gosh.. hard to call and funny too. None of it sound normal. The 1st superb best name given is "Hoi Foon" and my hubby surname is Koh.. so put together will end up "Call handphone". tongue.gif
So we decide to go for 2nd superb name. Still another "ulu" name. biggrin.gif

ya, agree, no specific rules.
my cousin wrote a poem for his daughter, and he taken 2 words from the poem to name his daughter.
to me, my only rules are avoid words that have too many strokes or words that have funny/bad meaning or sound...

Why go to those Feng Shui master calculate and provide a name for your kid? Then ask someone translate all the chinese to you. The service is not expensive comparing blindly choose a name.

Honestly, i don't see the point of following the middle name anymore.
The ancient Chinese uses it as a way to find their ancestors or descendants and other family members related to them.
My family has stopped following this rule since my father's generation.

However, I understand ur predicament since my parents in law are still following this old school tradition.
Anyhow, you can just ask those feng shui master to give you a list of names to pick from.
Normally they will give you at least 3 to 4 options and they will explain why it's good.

I am banana too. Last time consulted my father in law for my son's name.
I didn't like it and I asked to change cause I don't want the name to haunt my son forever.

Am ok with the word "hoi" but the 1 given to my son (by sifu) is "hoi foon".. kinda hard to call.
Of coz this name created for the reason to counter the kid's character (based on DOB). The name "Hoi Foon" to get the child to have a big heart (as if ocean) and forgiving (foon = foon shue; not the happy foonhei).
But though I didn't pick this name, my child infact never behave kecik hati (quite generous in giving) and dun seem like can get angry at all. hmm.gif

My son last name having 14 strokes. He end up writing English name on all his books except chinese subject. He told us that chinese writing is informal in this country, wait until his IC reflect those chinese character, then only he will start to write more (good excuse). tongue.gif
