I have to go back Windows 8.1 for now, until Microsoft fix Windows 10 tablet mode. grumble.gif

is windows 10 recommended to update?

You can upgrade first, restore back to Windows 8.1 is pretty painless and took me like around 5-7 minutes only (really surprised).

I think the desktop mode is pretty ok. Desktop mode has some issues but most of them are very minor.
However tablet mode is really unproductive now.

Actually, tablet mode is alright. It is intuitive when you get a hang of it.
In desktop mode you just arrange your favorite tiles so that it would be easier to chose in tablet mode.
For me Win10 is the best thing that happened to SP3, apart from the issues with Cortana being not made available to us and Groove music that is buggy. Also hate it when using IE with type cover, the close tab button is damn small that cursor need to be on the X to close a tab.

I appreciate the effort Microsoft spent into Windows 10, and many of them are lovely.
But I afraid the redesigned start menu is less useful compared to Windows 8's.

It's quite lengthy so I decided to spoiler it.
Things I think it's worse:

But of course there are many new things that I like in Windows 10:

My desktop PC is still using Windows 10, and I probably not going to restore it back to Windows 8.1.
But I restored my surface back to windows 8 because of all the problem I mentioned above, and I use it in tablet mode most of the time.
This really showing why windows 8.1 touchscreen mode is better: http://imgur.com/dw78TjU

I'll keep using Windows 8.1 in my SP3 and wait until Microsoft fix the tablet mode issues (maybe Service Pack?), but I can only hope.

And, apparently, it supports SP3!

Oh really thks for ur info, haha if going to buy sure i5 is minimum request for me. Oh the fingerprint keyboard only available in US huh, too sad T.T
*
Yeah, it's kind of weird to see fingerprint sensor only available to US. Wonder why is that.
I might get the new pen and type cover, they seems like a good upgrade for SP3, but not much info how much SP3 can support the new feature of the pen yet.

Here's what I use my surface 3 64gb for:

1. Browse website, but remember to use Chrome, firefox is not tablet friendly, and Edge is not powerful. The pro of surface 3 is that i can lay on bed and open multiple tab (at the same time) in Chrome browser while this not really supported in ipad.

2. Stream iflix (or netflix) using Chrome. surface 3 got around 5 hours battery life if you continuous streaming (sad). Overall the screen is bigger than ipad, so I do enjoy watch series/movies using it. And surface 3 got quite a good speaker, and display also not bad.

3. Open microsoft excel/powerpoint/doc from onedrive, then edit it and save it online. great for on the go document editing.

4. Open skype for audio/video call.
but the down side is their app store basically got nothing. no game, no app can really be use.

and battery life made me sadding a bit. and normal micro usb charger doesn't really charge well.

Chrome is known for bad battery consumption, google 'Chrome battery drain' and you can find many result about it.
With chrome I can only reach at max 5 hours, with IE/Edge however, I can reach 8-9 hours (I'm using Surface Pro 3).

There are few ways to 'optimize' it a bit though:
- Use H264ify extension to use H264 codec to playback video (more info: https://www.reddit.com/r/Surface/comments/2..._your_surface/)
- Use uBlock instead of AdBlock
- Disable 'Continue running background apps when Google Chrome is closed' in settings, however this may cause some 'Chrome apps' unable to use when chrome is closed.

Google also promised to improve Chrome on this battery drain issue. Hopefully they can really solve this soon.

IE/Edge is really 'naked' compared to Chrome/Firefox in terms of functionality, but I can say IE11 Metro is one of the best touch-screen optimized browser I ever tried (even better than some mobile OS browser). I really hope Microsoft can deploy the touch gesture and also plugin to Edge ASAP.

He has a habit of using it in bed, and then of course it will fall down when he rolls over the course of the night. It's happened twice already (yeah, I'm at my tether with this one), so I'm just going to pad it as much as possible to prevent it from happening again.

Already told him don't use it in bed but ofc never listen. It's his Surface and I'm the one pening kepala.  rclxub.gif

Surface Pro 3 is unfortunately quite fragile, most report on drop doesn't end well, and the repair fee is not cheap as well...unless he bought Microsoft Complete Extended Warranty which you can replace broken device for a new one. Still Microsoft Complete Extended Warranty doesn't seems applicable in Malaysia.

If you insist on getting a case to protect SP3 from dropping, have a look on this:

Not cheap, and, not easy to find here. sweat.gif

I am thinking to buy surface pro 4. Main usage on portability post processing photo. Surfing. Some documentation. Maybe some games but not main usage.

Dunno what to pick..

Option A: Surface Pro 4 i5 with Intel HD 520 cost RM 5799.

Option B: Surface Pro 4 i7 with Intel Iris 540 cost RM 7099. Do you think worth that extra RM 1300 for that better iris 540.

Or buy a 6 to 7k gaming laptop like Alienware 13 or 15 which already is i7 with Nvidia 960m/970m but it is only FHD and crazy bulky and heavy, not really portability.

Need some advice. Appreciate.

I don't recommend buying SPs if gaming is one of the need.
I'm a gamer but I find my SP3 is just too weak for gaming. Too much 'worry' to deal with (heat, throttle, battery, etc).
However I love it every bit when it comes to portability. Now I mainly using it for programming and photography post-process purpose, it's just wonderful.

I guess I am lucky. Warranty ended on 16 Dec, but realise the screen edge lifted on 14 Dec.
Registered for warranty replacement on 14 Dec, but the courier messed thing up and delayed the pickup until 23 Dec (24 and 25 public holiday somemore).

But Microsoft still fulfilled the warranty, and send me a new one! Or maybe it's a refurbished unit, but it's looks totally new.

noob question, using Windows 10, i heard the some program is directly bundled on the Surface, and if reinstall it will be gone, want to get a thumb drive to backup it first, is the built in backup utility sufficient?

and the restore, it is like as easy by booting the USB, and restore? by the way, how to set Surface Pro 4 to boot to USB? thanks
*
You can download the recovery image for your surface pro 4.
Check the link here:
https://www.microsoft.com/surface/en-us/sup...-recovery-drive

Inside it contains link to download the recovery image, steps-by-steps to use the image, and how to boot from USB and things.

Recovery image can do fresh install as well, it basically is the Windows that bundled with Surface Pro devices driver and apps. So it will make it back to the cleanest state with surface apps.
