M3 or surface 3 will be better choice

i5 should be powerful enough as my SP3 i5 have no lag in editing photo but not sure about sketching
It do render slower than my i7 sandy bridge laptop but the time is acceptable which 12-18MP RAW photos
Pen lag you should be in concerned in photoshop

So far only usb 3.0 hdd work on my SP3
Mainly because the usb port can't provide enough power for old version of external hdd
Way to solve it is using Y cable with external power source like power bank or other

And there's no 3rd party docking station at the moment but lots of 3rd party adapter available

Too bad our mini displayport not thunderbolt compatible else lots of thing can be solve d

Another point is although surface pro been a tablet but yet we likely to use it as laptop which stay on the desk most of the time
And we have type cover to cover the screen when we not using it
That's why I think screen protector not really a must like phone

Dont expect you can game well with SP4
If neglect gaming and you don't really mind of battery life SP4 might be the one for you
But do go try out the keyboard first because it's not everyone taste which pavilion have display unit
The cons of SP4 is it only have one usb 3.0 port and non upgradeable SSD
Transfer from SD card or compact flash to external is impossible without usb hub and might need external power
And you need bluetooth mouse when work with photoshop and etc which other wireless mouse will take usb port

In your requirement, XPS13 or Surface Book or rMBP will be better choice for you
