I spilled milo on the left keyboard on my laptop..I was watching a video and as it happens the sound from the video is gone. Panic as I am I stupidly lift the laptop a bit to clean under the laptop. Then suddenly milo spill from the right side (apparently I unconsciously tilt the laptop). Then the laptop screen turn completely white. I turn it off by pressing the power button till it turn off and close the charger. While these happens, the laptop did not have a battery.

Now here's the stupidest part...shortly after I turn off the charger, I turn it back in and tried to turn on the laptop. The power symbol and one other keyboard I couldnt remember which, has a glow. The place to plug in the charger also glows. Then I plugged in the battery and repeatedly tried to power on the laptop with and without the battery. Now there's no.glow whatsoever, it's completely dead. I dont remember how many times I tried to turn on the laptop. After going on internet, I know I shouldnt turn on the power...

I left my laptop upside down. It now smells like milo..did I just fry my laptop or is it still fixable? The most important thing, can I recover all my data in local disk c?

Hi from your symptoms it is most likely your motherboard is shorted due to the liquid you spilled. Data are usually placed in your hard disk, so i don't think there's problem with that. But clearly you needed a new laptop most likely.

should immediate turn off, do disassemble and clean out before turn on.

u can try drying out the milo from the laptop... throw it in the rice tong for a few days and leave it dry for a few days... without the battery inside...

then after a week... try power it on again...

otherwise... u can ask PC shops to help you retrieve your data...

buy used business grade laptop with spill-proof keyboard.

Is it right that to retrieve the data, the laptop needs to be disassembled and take out the harddisk, then connect it with usb? If I ask a pc shop to transfer the data to a new laptop that I will buy from them, how much will it cost me?

Depending on laptop design, some required extra effort, some will be easy, kindly refer to your manufacturer model user guide where they will usually teach you how to remove the hard disk. There are plenty of hard disk reader outside or even better you could spend around rm25-50 for a external hard disk enclosure(just he enclosure without the hard disk) and access your files from your new laptop.

I just let the shop guys do it coz I'm afraid I will break something if I do it myself lol I just got back from the shop. Looks like the milo spilled all over the component and left tons of residues and as expected it is not fixable. Thankfully they can recover the data. I asked them to make it like an external hard disk. I read somewhere that the hdd is more delicate and fragile than normal external hard disk. Once it is enclosed by the case, it's not fragile anymore right?
