I found out from Maxis that my number 012 is in fact a recycled number. Why would they give me a recycled number in the first place and still ask me to choose my own 4 digits ? That is just stupid.

Although so far I have not received more harassing call as of yet, just 1 call asking for someone previous day, but I feel uneasy with this number that someone has already used it. Can I change to a new number under the same carrier ? What is your experienced with using a recycled number ? I would like to hear more, is there a need to change ?

I think most new numbers are recycled ones these days. Terminated prepaid numbers get recycled within weeks. Maybe those 011 numbers have the better chance of being new. Be careful of the incoming sms that deduct credit. Any subscriptions by previous owner won't necessarily get automatically cancelled.

My new 019 is also a recycled number. Got few calls from the same number daily. I blocked all calls except those in my Contacts. F them!

So far I haven't receive any sms bills from previous owner. Nor have I received any harassed calls yet. I just feel uneasy it's a used number, and they did not told me beforehand. Is there a way to change the number ? Just go to Maxis?

Actually I can say almost all 10 digit like 012 and 017 are recycle number, so far I am okay with recycle number cause usually telco will keep it 3-6 months before the num release again. If someone call you just say the number already belong to the new owner

In other words, it's kinda like a new number? since they only release it after few months.

one thing came into my mind:

those pakciks makciks keep getting charged for things they didn't subsribe to.

could it be because of this recycled number issue?

Yea can say so, they will not release the number immediately after the old owner terminate the number
But there will be still some call from previous owner's friends even after a certain recycle period

Quite possibly. I have had the experience of activating a new prepaid sim a few years back and immediately receiving sms to say some subscription had been renewed. My first thought was that the dealer who sold me the sim pack had signed me up for this service, then I realised it was legacy from previous user of the number. Luckily I figured out how to cancel straightaway, but yeah not everyone would notice, maybe some wouldn't even read the sms.

I see, so far I have not received any calls yet, just the one and only where I received the day I got the sim. But I guess, if this is the case, can consider this as a new number that's been vacant for months.

every telco will recycle their number else we would end up with 80 digit long number by now if every used number got cancelled into oblivion.

Quite normal actually.
A few years ago I bought a recycled Hotlink sim card that previously belongs to someone named Najiha.

The sad part is, this Najiha borrowed from lots of banks but didn't pay for it.
I've been receiving calls 24/7 for 6 months straight. I kept repeating that I don't know who Najiha is.

This has also affected my bank loan requests where they ask me: "What is your relationship with Najiha?". doh.gif

I don't understand why they couldn't give us a real whole new sim with new number. If it's a recycled one, at least inform us before we purchase. Although I haven't receive any calls so far yet, been 1 week, but I'm not sure if I would be totally carefree using this number. To me, now it looks new, all's fine.

Unless a whole new list of numbers are released like when they just started 8 instead of 7 digits, chances of getting a recycled number will be there.

I think whether we'll get nuisance calls from it also depends on luck. If it's a number that's been very active previously, used for many years, then maybe many people still have it saved under the previous owner's name.

Don't let it worry you too much. For all you know, that's just the caller having dialed the wrong number. And whatever it is, I normally block such numbers immediately. I don't normally pick up calls from strange numbers, and if they're persistent, I'll block them too.

There are call-blocking apps that also give you the option to or not to block SMS as well. Some I won't block SMS-access, so if they really want to contact me (or my number), they can always send me a message. From there, I'll decide further if I want to reply that message or just block that as well. tongue.gif

Just keep proof like receipts to show that you bought that number on the particular date from a particular place, so that in case the number gets you into any legal complications, you've proof that you're innocent since you're just the new owner.

Yup exactly, I won't let it bother me at all because now I'm the new owner and like you said, could probably just be a random unknown caller, and you might be right coz I haven't been receiving any sms or calls as such as well.

that is telco fault ... they should cancel all the sms subscription before recycle the number.
