Recently I have bought a new notebook/laptop.. My previous had a antivirus software (Microsoft Security Essential).. And the seller told me that if I install an Antivirus, it might crash with my game, but I wonder.

question 1: is that true?

question 2: what antivirus are u using? what antivirus software is free and last long?

Bitdefender or AVG

1. Partially correct and wrong. If you have 2 Antivirus running in the same time, it may crash or detect one antivirus as a Virus/Trojan. Some game will detect certain games as Trojan/Virus and quarantine it (especially cracked games or hack tools)

2. Almost all Antivirus is NOT free and quite costly. The only FREE antivirus I know of (life-time) is Microsoft Security Essential or recently renamed Windows Defender in Windows 8 or 8.1.

If you're using Windows 7, you need to manually go to MSE or Windows Defender website to download it. If you're using Windows 8 or 8.1, you already have it. It comes as a bundle in Win 8 or 8.1

use either one, both should suffice for your usage. Prevention is better than cure, a good practice would be pay attention or careful about the site you visit. And always remember keep your windows and application updated, as it indirectly strengthen your pc defense by patch up any vulnerabilities remain.

if you are still worry, just use malwarebyte anti malware for weekly scan to remove any malware that may get infected your pc.

use la... like normal.. lol... if you don't share file/pendrive between colig sure no problem.Email /Dropbox if sharing..

windows default allready got anti virus but i disable it 2..

today is usually people will partner their antivirus with malware removal (try malwarebytes)

I think there should be, cause it is bundled in the OS together.. Win 8 or 8.1 should comes together with Win. Defender. Try search for Windows Defender in your Apps Search.

Installing an antivirus is a must unless you don't connect to internet or pendrive/exHDD...

If you just browsing trusted sites like LYN, microsoft, youtube, etc then Windows 8.1's Defender / MSE would do it... but I really don't recommend using it, even my bro laptop with Avast free got attacked by various PUP/toolbar/spyware (and yeah it depends on AV settings)

If you want the cheapest, here you go: Trend Micro IS 2015 1 year... I just got myself one few days ago but I'm planning to use BitDefender's free 6-month trial instead...

If you want cheaper than this then:
Avast free, Avira free, Bitdefender free, AVG free etc (surely wayyyy better than MSE)

Eset in my experience of using many kind of AV that really don't interrupt my heavy browsing and gaming installation activity etc... my fav of all time...

Hello! I am in need of anti-virus too. My friend says that Avira is good. But reading through this thread, I feel like Avira is not that good. Should I get the MSE?

By the way, I do rmbr the shop keeper told me try to put my data, game, software in D drive instead of C drive.. It is because I can recover my laptop by using C drive when my D drive is infected with virus.. Sth deal with partition.. Is it true?

Hmm, the partition for C is usually "system drive" - for your system e.g. OS, applications, while D is usually for you to store game data (game local files), movies/videos, music -- any multimedia stuffs, also the data for applications (or also full application depends on the app itself). The shop keeper told you to do so is because yes, one of the reasons he/she had mentioned to you. However it can be also vice versa, if the "system drive" is infected with virus and the system files get corrupted (means ggwp) , the files in D won't be affected (means if you somehow recovered your laptops with help of someone else, you can still listen to your music, watch movies downloaded into D).

What he/she basically meant is that, if you accidentally downloaded malicious software/games (from some free websites full of malicious ads and popups) and install it on D, then suddenly the downloaded stuffs are in fact carrying viruses and infect the D drive, you can format the D drive since it is infecting that partition only, without infecting system drive ©. It's kind of like security measure. Also, windows defender and (sometimes) web browsers will block the downloaded softwares/games unless you yourself allow them to proceed

today malware has developed become quite advanced that it is possible for them to infect the whole computer or spread/duplicate them self to other location regardless of how many drives or partition your system has.

windows 8 built in antivirus and firewall is enough for average user. if u do visit some shady site, please get a proper antivirus to protect your system.

MSE is the worst IMO . I still remembered my pc gt virus infection after few days I install it after uninstalling Kaspersky . LOL
