QUOTE VAN GAAL'S VERDICT ON VICTORY OVER CLUB AMERICA Manchester United secured a deserved 1-0 victory over Club America on Thursday evening in the first match of Tour 2015, presented by Aon, and in Louis van Gaal's post-match press conference the boss had plenty to say about his team's performance in Seattle... On United's display against Club America: "It is our first 45-minute game. I wanted to see our defensive organisation and that was the main aspect. We didn't give a goal away, only one or two chances, so I am satisfied about that. We played like a team and [Club] America was very handy with the ball, all of the players were very aggressive and quick, so it was not so easy. All of my players have done the function of what they have to do in our philosophy, so I am happy and satisfied. We have won so in the tournament we are still in the race." On Morgan Schneiderlin's headed winner: "He scored with Southampton, I believe five goals, so it is not a coincidence but we have practised this with him so I was very pleased with the performance. It is also a fact that America don’t have many good headers so we knew in advance that our benefit was there. Like I have said in the Premier League, it is not our benefit as we are always small.” On the players who did not feature: “David De Gea and Antonio Valencia were injured, minor injuries, but we cannot take any risks. Marouane Fellaini is suspended for the first three [Premier League] matches so he has a longer time to prepare himself and I need to see other players. Sean Goss was not selected because I have selected other players.” On the playing surface at CenturyLink Field: “The pitch was difficult. Also, the first surface [underneath] is artificial and the grass is always moving. You saw a lot of players slipped. You can get more injuries, which is a concern. But also last season against Real Madrid we played in such circumstances. That is the difference in the US with American football stadiums, it is more important. In England we have Old Trafford and it is only for football. It is not for entertaining. There is no One Direction. In England we live for football but in USA they live for American football and baseball.” On his plans for the three remaining tour matches: “We use this tournament for our match rhythm, to build it up. So we play the next match against San Jose and we will also play 45 minutes for all of the players. That is our philosophy and then we will play 60 minutes and 30 minutes. Maybe in the last match we will play for 90 minutes, or use another team to play for 60 minutes. That I don’t know. I have to read the data of the players. But our plan is to play the next game with 22 players.” On Daley Blind becoming a long-term centre-back: “It could be. Marcos Rojo is not here. He shall also come on 25 July. I want to play always with a left-footed central defender and Blind can do the job. Maybe he shall play there but all the players can play there. Last year it was Jones and Smalling, and even McNair has played there. But my preference is a left-footed defender and with Rojo and Blind we have two.” http://www.manutd.com/en/Tour-2015/News-an...ub-America.aspx This post has been edited by alien2003: Jul 18 2015, 03:37 PM |

QUOTE Ed Woodward reveals United's scouting process Executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has outlined the scouting process at Manchester United and detailed how the club conducts its incoming transfer business. Woodward has overseen deals to acquire Matteo Darmian, Memphis Depay, Morgan Schneiderlin and Bastian Schweinsteiger this summer and the work to identify targets clearly takes some time. Admitting it is a "relentless" pursuit of fresh talent, he reveals a shortlist is drawn up for each position targeted. When asked to detail the process involved, he said in an extensive and exclusive interview with MUTV: "It’s actually fairly straightforward. We have a global scouting network that’s all over many countries and key markets from a football perspective. The scouts are watching matches and we have a huge amount of data we purchase and a pyramid approach in terms of delivering that information to our chief scout and his team who are assessing it. "So we’re always able to look at a position and have our view in terms of the list of targets that we think will suit Manchester United and help our team. That list is then discussed with Louis [van Gaal] and his staff and there’s a process of further analysis done. "Once Louis sets his targets – and I think it’s always important to have more than one target for each position, because you have to accept that sometimes you may not get your first choice for whatever reason, so let’s plan ahead and look at two and three – then all I do is go and negotiate the deals with the club and the player. It’s straightforward, although it may not be easy in terms of negotiations." Once the transfer deadline has passed at the end of August, work will already start on assessing potential targets for 2016. The planning is clearly fundamental to ensuring United have a squad capable of competing for top honours. "It’s really September," Woodward replied, when asked when the whole process starts. "Once the window closes, your scouts are then starting to look at the key areas where you think you may have a weakness and the whole process starts. The manager will have had four more months of working with the squad [by January] and have had much better visibility of who the ins and outs should be, but the work has to have started to get them. "Yes, essentially there is [a physical list of names] because we track everything. That's what the scouting team does. It's relentless because you're immediately focused on the next [signing]. To that extent, I am completely aligned with the fans. When we tell them we’ve signed a player, there is a moment of happiness but then it’s about who’s next. "There is a lot of work involved in terms of negotiations and that is time-consuming, so I prefer to look back at it at the end of the window, see the players on the pitch and see how they’ve been blended into the squad." http://www.manutd.com/en/News-And-Features...ter-united.aspx QUOTE Van Gaal has transfer targets in two positions Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has revealed the summer spending is set to continue during an exclusive interview with MUTV. Four additions have been made to the squad – Matteo Darmian, Memphis Depay, Morgan Schneiderlin and Bastian Schweinsteiger – but the Reds boss is still targeting players in at least two positions. When asked by MUTV's Stewart Gardner if he expects more players to arrive before the deadline at the end of August, van Gaal replied: "I hope so. No, we are not finished yet, I think. "It is what I have said already in many press conferences. We need a balance in the selection and I think we still need to improve at least two positions and we shall do that when it is possible. "But we shall only buy when the player can give a contribution to our level. And, of course, that is in the eyes of our staff, but I have to have confidence that he can cope with the rhythm of the Premier League." http://www.manutd.com/en/News-And-Features...fer-market.aspx |

QUOTE Juan Mata: Manchester United midfielder knew of rebuilding plan Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata has said he was told about the size of the club's rebuilding task before he joined in January 2014. United have not won a trophy since Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement two years ago and a seventh-place finish in 2014 is their worst in the Premier League. Ten players have joined since Mata's switch for a then club-record £37.1m under Ferguson's successor David Moyes. "They told me 'you are very important, you are one of the first'," Mata said. The Old Trafford club completed the double signing of Germany midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger and France international Morgan Schneiderlin on 13 July. Schneiderlin scored five minutes into his first United appearance with the only goal against Club America on the tour of the United States. "I knew the club was going to have these kind of signings," Mata said. The total amount spent on the 10 players is £228.1m, a figure which does not include the £6m loan fee for striker Radamel Falcao, who has since joined Chelsea. Mata, who has scored 16 goals in 50 competitive games for United, added: "We know there is still a lot of work to do. "It's not just about bringing good players in. It's about playing well and winning trophies." http://www.bbc.com/sport/0/football/33584202 |

QUOTE Angel Di Maria: Man Utd winger set for Paris St-Germain medical Manchester United's Angel Di Maria is set to have a medical in the next 24 hours before a proposed move to Paris St-Germain. The winger, a British record £59.7m signing last summer, is expected in Doha on Sunday to meet PSG officials. United have declined to comment but the 27-year-old Argentina international will reportedly cost £46m. Di Maria did not join United's pre-season tour of the United States after appearing at the Copa America in Chile. The former Real Madrid player moved to Old Trafford last August after helping the Spanish giants to a 10th European Cup in 2014. But after a promising start, including a goal and an assist in three of his first four appearances, his form fell away midway through the season. He started only one match after a defeat by Arsenal in the FA Cup quarter-final on 9 March. http://www.bbc.com/sport/0/football/33750886 |
