I'm thinking of buying a gaming laptop

Within the budget of 4.5- 6k,
Has good cooling
Cool design(Not the most important but its a plus)
Good after sale service.

Also don't recommend Illegear,i'm planning on buying Illegear, but before I make a decision I want to see if there are other options available.

How high end you want to go ? Currently GTX980m is the end game for mobile gpu, if you want to get the highest end, D5 is better as it has better cooling than S5. But bulkier and heavier. Upgrade-wise, D5 is better also.

Performance wise, D5 processor will be better than S5 cause of Desktop CPU.

If you're going to a decent high end model, Z5 will be sufficient. But you can't expect to play Witcher 3 on ultra settings on a mobile gpu and get very good fps.

I guess i'm trying to figure out which is "bang for the buck" within a 6k budget,do I get Z5 at 970 and still have enough money to upgrade to 500 GB SSD or a D5 which has better vram and a desktop processor or just go for the best GPU with S5.Decision,decision... hmm.gif

Depends on your usage. If I have that budget, I will get Z5 970m and get 500GB SSD. It is better IMO cause I find it quite impossible for a mobile gpu to beat games like Witcher 3 on ultra settings 1080p. Even Desktop GPU struggle to perform well on that settings. It is also the best bang of buck for gtx970m laptop.

VRam wise, you no need to be so concern about it, since you won't be playing on ultra settings, you won't need so much vram tho. (I'm talking about the current demanding game like Witcher 3) Lesser vram also produce lesser heat

I believe you can get some discount since you're spending so much. D5 may not be so mobile as it is quite bulky.

If mobility is not a need for you, just get a desktop.. haha

P.S: Not to be offensive, if you're not doing design work, 4k screen is totally useless for you. Your GPU won't support you on that resolution and it is a 48hz panel. (well of course old game will be no problem, but make sure the game support that resolution)

My heart is just torn apart,if i get z5 I still have money to upgrade to ssd and some extra cash, but i'm gonna miss out on a desktop cpu laptop.Cause i'm gonna work and play games with it(yeah i need mobility).

Also I keep hearing people say D5 cooling is good so I guess thats a good sign, but how its battery life, since its using desktop cpu how long can it last?.

D5 battery life is about 2.5 to 3 hours in normal surfing. It doesn't have Nvidia Optimus (graphics switching technology) like other laptops because its desktop chipset.

D series is using 8-cell battery FYI.

you may take a look of MSI Gaming laptop. They has really high quality gaming spec and many muti-functional features. I got GE72 in May so far still love it ^^ none disappoint any yet. (highly recommended)they came out the new version tho. if you prefer with portable laptop you may have a look of ge62 2ql with 5gen HQ new processor. or your can take a look of ge72 a bit heavy but its worthy.

I'm also have similar budget of 6K maxed to bought new gaming laptop end of next month after giving away my Nitro to my youngest brother for his use in Uni. I'm eyeing MSI GE62 or MSI GS60 or Z5 or S5. I dunno which to choose from. The more I read from forum and review ... the more confused I become rclxub.gif rclxub.gif rclxub.gif

the only thing that sway my heart is with Illegear you need to add more for OS if they have good discount for OS I might buy with them... as I saw alot of ppl selling OS cheap in garage sales... but I scared getting conned... and I prefer buying with everything been preinstalled for me....

and then need to decide between SSD and HDD as I read and they said SSD much better because of less heat and noise been generated from them. Everyone input on this is much appreciated. BTW sorry to TS as I tumpang your thread. notworthy.gif

Its alright biggrin.gif (I tumpang too sometimes lol),Don't know about msi much but I think ppl say GE62 is good, but with illegear if you really want SSD I would say go for Z5(unless you want professional looking laptop).I would just get a Z5 if I wasn't eyeing on that gorgeous piece of machinery "D5" wub.gif (i'm just kidding).
