It's the goofiness that I like about Dragonforce........ Metal is awesome.... but shouldn't be so serious!
*
Rhapsody is probably goofier compared to Dragonforce... precisely because they take their stuff waaaaaay too seriously... laugh.gif

E.g. from the "Rain of a Thousand Flames" album:

"Oh god!...oh god... no... / They found it, they found
it... the ancient words are going to be pronounced...
thanks to the cosmic power of the emerald weapon
the book of the dead kept by the dark angel is now
open and the rites of blood are going to begin...
Oh no, god!... oh no... I hear those damned words...
Necros, Dagma, Atra, Krona... "

These days I've been practicing Arpeggio sweep picking..... My alternate picking is quite up to scratch, but my sweep picking is absolutely HORRIBLE! Also, I do alot of pentatonic phrasings..... need to make up better solo lines.
*
Hi, just wondering... do you practice your sweep picking and alternate picking on your RR or your LP?

I heard that it's very hard to "shred" on an LP...

...unless you've got a big bulls-eye on it and play in a band named after a famous liquor... brows.gif

I've played an LP-shaped guitar once or twice and couldn't get the hang of the fret-spacing and neck radius.

I think sweep picking is just tough, no matter the guitar. It's not so hard to get the basics down, but being able to play arpeggios fast, clean and articulate is just a major #$*(#&$!! sweat.gif

Hehe... I'm pretty disappointed to have missed the last Gathering. Too bad that the next one seems to be by invitation only... sad.gif

Would have loved to see some l33t sweeping! thumbup.gif

Hi, just wondering if someone can enlighten me on the advantages/disadvantages of having a flame maple or quilted maple top (other than the "looks" factor)?

Does it give the guitar better sustain or change the tonal characteristics?

Thanks!

Thanks, guys...

Not sure if I'd want to go for a maple top for my next guitar as I'm not too fond of bright tones. Plus, it's kinda pointless to have a graphics paintjob on a flamed/quilted maple top, huh... smile.gif

any idea what guitar is he using? quite cool
*
The Caparison Horus has interesting specifications. 27 frets, but with 24 1/2 scale like an LP. They make only about 40 guitars per month and all go through the top honcho, some Japanese guy who was formerly from Jackson. cool2.gif

Sure wish I could get one, but the price is waaaay prohibitive. sad.gif

yes... but hasn't his live playing gotten less accurate now that his guitar is slung so low, compared to the good ol' hatebreeder/follow the reaper days? smile.gif

that being said, sometimes I think to myself, if I know I'm going to slop anyway regardless of the guitar height, maybe it's better to just sling it low... better to look cool and play like sh!t than to look like a nerd and still play like sh!t... whistling.gif

you also have to consider the strain on your fretting-hand wrist as well when playing a low-slung guitar... no point getting carpal tunnel syndrome right? smile.gif

I use to swear by the small red stubby picks. Then switched to the Jazz III (although I preferred the black one because it seemed to have a better grip).

Now I've switched to the small purple Dunlop Tortex HS3 picks, which are maybe just a wee bit bigger than the Jazz III. The grip is very, very good...

The HS3 is good for rhythm since you can dig in and go <chugg-chugg-chugg>, but it is small enough that it's good for fast runs as well... you can still glide over the strings without too much of the pick dipping in between strings.

Problem with the HS3 is though, it's kinda hard to get and when it's brand new, the edge is really, really sharp... sad.gif

and when working on sweeps you should seperate your left and right first. geting your left to hit each notes hard and clear so each note can be heard clearly and no over tones and your right hand being able to reach a staccato like sound when sweeping for your right isntead of a strum. then put them together. This is how i usually tackle sweeps
*
If you don't mind me asking, what do you mean by overtones? Like when you tap a note on the 12th fret with your left hand and when you lift your finger, there's a harmonic-like sound?

I just checked the almighty Wiki notworthy.gif , and it says that overtones are basically harmonics. Or something like that... (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Overtones)

I think I'm starting to understand what Equilibrium777 is talking about... sometimes if I sloppily tap a note with my left hand, the harmonic sounds instead of the actual note. ...then again, I may be completely off the mark... biggrin.gif

...argh, I think the hardest part about sweeping is the left-hand muting...

If I'm playing an ascending arpeggio, I can rely on me trusty right-hand to mute the lower strings as I ascend. But for descending arpeggios, I gotta rely on me not-so-trusty left hand to mute the higher strings as I descend. And as a result there's usually way too much noise in my descending arpeggios. sweat.gif

...and no, valkyrie1232, I will not back off on my gain knob, since it goes to 11!... rclxm9.gif

Yeah... this starting to sound like a Sweepers Anonymous meeting.

"I... I... used to play... 6-string, 5-octave, 24th-note arpeggios at 200 bpm..."

I've always wondered... for some funny reason, the EMGs in the ZW set are referred to as Gibson-spacing... Don't the 81/85 use rails instead of pole pieces? Anyone ever noticed it? hmm.gif

where did you read it?

The manual/paper thingy that comes in the box. Hmmm, yeah, it could refer to the extra long cavities-thingy as Blacktrix says.

I was wondering why rails would have Gibson or F-spacing... laugh.gif

Speaking of which........ here's an interesting topic.....
What's the first EVER song you learned on the guitar, and thought to you buy whom?
*
Song 2 by Blur, taught by valkyrie1232... notworthy.gif

of course, that was way back in those pre-millenium days before valkyrie started playing whole-tone scales, tapping, sweep arpeggios etc! thumbup.gif
