u can use windows movie maker but the effect u can use is quite limited...but really easy for home use...
u can also check out for sony vegas, this one is also good for more effect use and multiple video layers... might want to integrate with after effect... |

After Effects is visual effects composition software.. you cant do proper video editing as it has limited potential.
For home user, use Ulead video studio, cheap to buy and upgrade. |

Videostudio is a ***** to work with, slow and kinda outdated (the designs)
If you can learn something try Sony's Screenblast Studio. It's a simplified version of Sony's great Vegas video editing app. Besides that, you can also try out Adobe's Premiere Elements 3. |

Had been tried out Ulead & Pinnacle for YEARS~!.. Get away from them. Big installationHDD space eater too.
Listen to Sony Vegas~~!! If u ever use others editing program, Vegas chances in crashing is very minimum.. Unbelievable cool editing program. |

I think, for a starter/newbie, the threadstarter should try Windows Movie Maker.

yea.. each software has its own pros and cons
i've started with ULEAD VIDEO STUDIO then just trying out MOVIE MAKER, SONY VEGAS advance level can try PINNACLE, ADOBE PREMIERE, ADOBE AFTER EFFECTS. movie maker is not good for me because.. it doesnt have the compatibility to play in vcd/ dvd just pc playback.. then, need to convert.. |
