QUOTE(Pink Spider @ Aug 15 2015, 10:07 AM) That is one. Another, market is RARELY rational. China/HK undervalued? How to say undervalued? What is your definition of "value"? Just because it used to trade at PE 15 times, and its now 10 times, so it's cheap? Value is subjective. U see LV bag 20% discount, good value. But I see it's just an ugly piece of leather, u sell me RM100 I also don't want, I rather have a tower of beer with that money. US/Europe/Japan overvalued yes, but I'm buying names like ExxonMobil, CITIBANK, BMW, General Electric, Toyota, SONY etc. How many years of heritage, how many years of steady growth? Compare that to Asian growing companies. Yeah recent growth was booming, but how many companies boom like a star and then disappear abruptly? See HTC now? I'm still sticking to my 1/3 Developed Markets 2/3 Asia+EMs strategy Actually on a hindsight, 50/50 is even better Many great US/Europen/Japan companies make their fortunes in emerging markets. And, while China is the world leader in manufacturing solar panel, many top Chinese solar panel makers have gone bust. This post has been edited by river.sand: Aug 15 2015, 02:21 PM |

QUOTE(Vanguard 2015 @ Aug 17 2015, 05:47 PM) Interesting. I wonder whether it is possible to have a voting system in this thread. I am really quite keen to see the asset allocation ratio of the members here. I guess we have to look at bigger picture, which include your other assets.I always thought (maybe wrongly?) that most investors here are mostly into equity funds and have very little bond funds. If you still have quite a bit of cash in FD account, then your bond portion can be smaller. On the other hand, if you have invested heavily in properties, you may want to reduce your equity portion. |

QUOTE China factory activity falls to weakest in over six years sourceFactory activity in the world's second largest economy, China, shrank at its fastest pace in more than six years in August. The private Caixin/Markit manufacturing purchasing managers' index (PMI) dropped to 47.1 from 47.8 in July. A figure below 50 shows contraction in the sector and one above means growth. 47.1 is pretty bad. But China's service sector is expending. Will it be able to offset the slowdown in factory activities This post has been edited by river.sand: Aug 21 2015, 04:41 PM |

China plans to let its main state pension fund invest in the stock market for the first time, the country's official news agency, Xinhua, has reported.
Under the new rules, the fund will be allowed to invest up to 30% of its net assets in domestically-listed shares. China's main pension fund holds 3.5tn yuan ($548bn; £349bn), Xinhua said. The move is the latest attempt by the Chinese government to arrest the slide in the country's stock market. http://www.bbc.com/news/business-34033208 |

QUOTE(j.passing.by @ Aug 27 2015, 05:06 PM) Cannot think like this leh, as we cannot lose what we don't have. This is called opportunity cost If we think of these costs as losses, then very difficult to survive as 'no man is an island'; we will find it very difficult to spend money on anything if we don't want to allow any goods and service providers to make any profit from us! Simple to just think of net returns. If we spend time and effort on picking stocks on our own, then obviously we should expect better returns. |

QUOTE(T231H @ Aug 31 2015, 07:07 PM) the media has harped on 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB), it is not the only problem faced by Malaysia. If you see it in another way: money spent on taxi fare is good for the taxi drivers. There are other equally disturbing things happening in Malaysia, so 1MDB should not be the only news put on headlines, he said. In June, the World Bank released a report on Malaysia’s urban transportation system which revealed that Greater Kuala Lumpur residents spent 250 million hours a year stuck in traffic and travel 29km/h slower on average during morning peak hours, costing 1.1% to 2.2% of the gross domestic product (GDP) in 2014, or RM12.7bil to RM24.7bil in losses. Said Teng Boo: “Yes we talk about 1MDB and the RM42bil debt. That is bad and I am not belittling the problem. But here we have a problem which is happening every year. This is RM12.7bil to RM24.7bil which is lost per year,” He cites another example. “Why was Sepang chosen to house the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and not Subang? The KLIA is 80km from Kuala Lumpur. Today the KLIA is the furthest airport from the city centre in the world. “Right now, KLIA receives some 20 million to 30 million passengers a year. The amount of money that needs to be spent on the taxi fare to the airport is roughly RM70 one way. Lets say some 10 million people use the taxi to and fro the airport. This easily adds up to RM1.4bil. How much subsidies are we subsidising the KLIA?” asked Tan. “I have said this before. If we were to take a sleeping pill and sleep for 50 years, Malaysia may become Argentina if this continues. ” http://www.thestar.com.my/Business/Busines...imes/?style=biz And if taxi drivers have higher income, they would spend more, which is good for the economy. No? |

QUOTE(kimyee73 @ Sep 1 2015, 07:41 PM) That is why gold is considered as insurance because when everything else crashed and burnt, gold will shoot up to the sky. Gold investment (actually trading) is based on the Greater Fool Theory BTW, if stocks, bonds, properties all fail... In HK, people can still invest in parking lots And Pinky will invest in a Vietnamese bride |
