Market or index =/= Fund

If the index goes up and up and up and up, yeah correction may be due.

But if index yo-yo but fund goes up and up and up, the fund manager is doing a good job buying undervalued stocks and dumping overvalued stocks (repeat this over and over and over and over the years)

This is the simplistic view of things. wink.gif

hmm.gif didn't think of that in that perspective. icic... hmm.gif

is there any chance a fund still do good, while global bear is ongoing?
Fund manager have to be very picky about what they pick i think .  hmm.gif

I stand corrected but my understanding is this.....

A fund manager may want to buy when the market is down and the stocks are undervalued. But if there is not enough cash reserve and the investors in the fund are doing panic selling, then the fund manager will have no choice but to sell even if she wanted to hold on to the shares and buy more undervalued shares.

I wonder how the fund manager juggle the above scenario.

Amcommodities and Am Precious metal really take a beating. Lost 13% and 22% , RM8+k wiped off just like that....feel like buying a bit more tomorrow.
*
I think it is OK as long as it does not form more than 5% of your overall portfolio. I sold off my Am Precious Metals a few months ago. Couldn't take the heat.

Good opportunity to get in when it is getting out from oversold region. Right now still going into oversold. My Greater China is still having +5.6% ROI as of today.
*
Fuyoh, your ROI is still at +5.6% in the current market??? You must have bought it at a low price.

Without the other performing funds in my portfolio, I would have been slaughtered. My best performing fund to date is EISC. The YTD is 13.27%.

Give u a simple real life example...

I own 100% of Najip Songlap Sdn Bhd. My capital is RM80m

U wanna invest RM20m in Najip Songlap Sdn Bhd, making the capital increase to RM100m

(a) Today the company give me dividend of RM8m, but I chose to reinvest in the company, i.e. the company issues new share capital to me, sorta like a Bonus Issue. So, I will still have RM80m worth of shares in the company
U invest RM20m, u will own 20% (RM20m / RM100m) of the company

(b) No dividend
U invest RM20m, u will own 20% (RM20m / RM100m) of the company
*
Pink Spider, your example above is too complicated. I like your previous chicken farm example better. Easier to understand. biggrin.gif

Wah Lau eh?

Market down ... everyone quiet as a mouse.

When market up... suddenly an influx of posting asking what fund to go in!

UT 101: chasing market is a recipe for disaster.

Now, market down is the best time to enter and strategize! I.e., like playing chess, now is the best time to place your chess piece, don't only move when you are being checked.

It is human nature. We like to buy high and sell low. Very few investors will buy when the market is down, i.e. buy low and sell high.

That's why even if the sifus here share their "trade secrets", for e.g. Algozen, I won't be worried. Because nobody will follow them. It is just too "risky" to buy when the market is bleeding.

I just topped up all my China linked funds yesterday using Value Averaging. These are all the funds in the red now.

I hope it will work out by December 2015.

question is , which fund to go in?
*
I am not an expert in unit trust.

Speaking solely for myself, I topped up my China linked funds as follows:-

(1) CIMB China
(2) Eastspring Global Emerging Markets Fund
(3) Libra Consumer and Asia Leisure Fund
(4) Manulife China
(5) RHB Asia Financial Fund
(6) RHB China-India

These are funds which fell between 6% to 10% in "value" for the past 1 to 3 months. Pick the best fund to buy out of the lot.

if they have the potential to go up, yes picking up now presents value

but is the forecast going south or rebound later?
*
Eh, what forecast? I don't use forecast. I only look at the technical risks ratios of the funds. For example, things like alpha, beta, standard deviation and Sharpe ratio. All things being equal, the expense ratio as well. I only know the basics of the Modern Portfolio Theory, the details I leave it to the sifus here. biggrin.gif

These info will tell me whether the funds have the potential to do well in the future.

I am interested in that fell in value 6-10% past few months.

I wonder what do you meanĀ  by that.
*
Layman talk. It means funds which have negative total returns or have suffered losses of of 6-10% for the past 1-3 months.

Substitute the word "negative total returns" with the word "DISCOUNT" and this will encourage investors to buy and speculators to stay away.

Depending on how we look at it, this is either a very good year for investment or a very bad year for investment.

Every share market is being hit. So what would be your investment strategy in this volatile time? Care to share?

The performance of my funds within 3 days:-

(1) EISC from +10.00% to -0.01%
(2) KGF from +10.00% to +2.74%.

These two funds form about 17.877% of my total portfolio.

IMHO, now would be a good time for new investors to buy some EISC. Unless of course you are waiting for KLCI to fall below 1500 points.

My RHB Asian Total Return Fund is really going up these 1-2 weeks. Now at +6.81%. Apa sudah jadi? Same goes for my GITF and TA European Equity Fund.

As usual, being human, we will always say...." I should have bought more".

EISC -11.32%
benchmark, small-cap index -11.39%

KGF -7.90%
benchmark KLCI -06.57%

For a young investor, should go for more risk and take the small-cap fund...

Hehe. Thats what happened when you have no experience; indecisiveness. "Am I doing this right?". " Should I do something abt this?" etc. Sometimes too much information can be a killer for newbie like me.

I think J passing by is already at the professional fund manager level. He already has a mature portfolio. He probably started investing when some of us did not know what a unit trust is. smile.gif
