Reminds me of the 2nd hand car market ...

Not anyone can afford to keep their cars at home while they go out and search for their next set of wheels. The used car ppl now had resorted to so many things to woo buyers i.e "Drive 1st Pay Later" Scheme" (thanks to Proton's 6 Months no Pay Promotion), Zero Deposit Promotion and the best one ... Free Astro. Can you imagine? Free Astro from buying a used car?

A spoiled used camera market will benefit buyers in the long run but will kill sellers, which happens to be ppl like you and me also, wanting to dump our hardware for upgrades or even extra cash

Yeah man ... I am also 'dreaming' of my EOS 1D

Generally I would give myself some space to inhale and exhale, especially when it's a used item. With a certain budget, I was thinking about a Canon EOS 1D, EOS 30D or a new 400D package, still pondering ...

Even used Nikon D1X and D1H units are very low priced now, ranging about RM3000 to about RM5000, lower than the EOS 1D which is about RM5000+. Imagine, those are professional, tough and weather-sealed bodies, you basically can walk in the rain with them!

Nope, I was never on 5D, it's 300D.

So for those who are getting the D40 ... here are the 'suggested' buys after your 18-55mm kit lens.Remember that you can only use AF-S / AF-I lenses in order to have AF.

1. AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED (NEW) featuring Dual Mode VR
2. AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED
3. AF-S VR Micro-Nikkor 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED
4. AF-S Nikkor 300mm f/4D IF-ED

If that's the case, then Nikon did a few mistakes in this round :
1. They 'kill' other lens : only AFS and AFI lenses can be used to have AF.
2. They should put back 5-point AF instead of 3-point - it was silly to reduce it.
3. Small body is also a 'duh' - I bet it would be cheaper to produce a D40 out of a D50 chasis.

In the Canon world, female SLR photographers either uses entry levels or professional bodies to shoot, I hardly see one in-between. It's not the matter of they can afford or not, they're also CAPABLE of using what the other gender can use. Hardware distinguishes no sex

Cannot be Rm2280 lar ... if minus the cost of the lens then the entire body is already less then Rm2000? Cannot be mah ... SLR body cannot cost less than 2K one, if point-and-shoot maybelah

If you shoot daytime more than 98% of the time VR is useless and extra money paid for, if you mount your camera onto a tripod it's useless, if you handheld at extreme low shutter speed i.e at below 1/20 ALSO no use!

By the time they change their minds, the D40 should be worth less than Rm1500 in the second hand market ...

So in other words, if you're a beginner and your eyes are not sharp then manual focusing is rendered a useless function even for a telephoto zoom, let alone a supertele?

From what I gather, D40 owners ask 20 questions about how shallow is a certain aperture and how far is a certain focal length. Would they spend thousands to get lenses they know very well they can do nothing but manual focus? I dun think so lor

Then you are really caught! 3-point AF is as old a feature as old as can be, I still remember using a 5-year old Canon EOS D60 with 3-point AF last year

Maybe it will become 5-point or 9-point at the coming replacement. Get ready to chuck your camera for a better one next round, dun let pricing and packaging fool you anymore.

That's a reality actually, you see and hear lotsa ppl buy Nikon due to the price ... but you see mostly Canon during events
