Firmware updates definitely is a marketing tricks.
Newer model shipped with updated software is one of the trick to make customers upgrade their old smartphones. I jumped from Mi3 (4.4.4) to Mi4i (5.0.2) and to Mi Note (4.4.4) Honestly can't tell any experience difference between them though.
