3M Thinsulate is an excellent sound absorbing material (particularly on medium to high frequency, very effective in reducing wind noise) which has several advantages over other material.
1. Much better sound absorbing performance compared to other material like felt and Insuxxx/Superxxx.
2. Act as a thermal insulation material too (Good feature especially when you install it on the headliner / roof)
3. Light Weight (Less weight added).

Depending on how you want to install it, normally:
4 doors need about 2m x 1.5m
Floor needs about 2.5m x 1.5m
Trunk/Boot needs about 1.5m x 1.5m
Fender liner & all the pillars need about 1m x 1.5m
*Generally, for casual DIY, you need 5m to DIY all 4 doors, floor, rear shelf, ABC pillars & fender liner.
*3M Thinsulate has the best result if installed behind door trim, ABC pillars trim, roof, rear shelf, fender liner & behind bonnet insulation.
*Put at least 2 layers of 3M Thinsulate if you want to install on floor to achieve satisfactory effect.
*You can stack 2 layers of 3M Thinsulate without adhesive to achieve thicker thickness if desired.
*3M Thinsulate has minimum effect if installed on boot.
*Do not install 3M Thinsulate where it will be exposed directly to engine heat or exposed in car cabin.
Basic Knowledge of Automotive Soundproofing
There are 2 types of noise:
1)Structure-borne noise (Noise that travels in vehicle structure)
2)Airborne noise (Noise that travels in air)
Example of structure borne noise:
Consider an running engine as a source of vibration. When an engine is running, the vibration will propagate over the whole car structure, such as roof, door panels, etc. The vibrating roof, door panels will transfer energy into air inside the car cabin, and then generate noise.
Example of airborne noise:
Consider an running engine as a source of noise. The noise will propagate through the air and get into cabin through holes or leakage and across the surface of car structure.
There are 4 major ways to soundproof your car:
1) Isolation - reduce transmission of vibration energy (Structure borne noise)
Eg: Engine mount, suspension bush,etc
2) Damping - dissipate vibration energy into heat (Structure borne noise)
Eg: Constrained Layer Damper (CLD) like STP Gold, Dynamat Xtreme, etc
3) Barrier - reduce transmission of sound energy (Airborne noise)
Eg: Mass Loaded Vinyl (MLV) like Dynamat Dynapad, CAE VB-4, etc
4) Absorption - dissipate sound energy into heat (Airborne noise)
Eg: 3M Thinsulate, STP Biplast, open-cell foam, etc
To effectively soundproof your car, you need to use different types of material to tackle the noise. 3M Thinsulate sold here is one of the noise absorption material. Depending on area of treatment, you will get better result by combining 3M Thinsulate with CLD or/and MLV.
A very common example:
You have put on CLD like STP iSilver all over your door, floor, and roof (close to 100% coverage). The car become quieter but you still can hear noise like wind noise. CLD only reduces vibration of car structure, hence reducing structure borne noise. Wind noise will still get into cabin through gap between doors, hollow car structure, tiny gap at door handle, etc. Wind noise will also get into cabin through windows due to its low sound transmission loss. However, we are unable to treat the glass. But you can treat the door area by putting a layer of sound absorbing material behind door panel to absorb the wind noise. You can also put a heavy layer of MLV (high sound transmission loss) to block the noise if you don't care about the extra weight added to the doors. Sound absorbing materials like 3M Thinsulate reduce echo by absorbing the sound. Hence, you will have a better car audio and conversation quality.
Tips: Have no luck in finding MLV in Malaysia due to low demand and low awareness on this material? Try to put (do not need to stick) a layer of CLD on top of 3M Thinsulate or PE foam, and you will get a more flexible alternative to MLV. The concept of using MLV to block noise is by putting a heavy layer (~1 lb/ft2, some are lower at 0.5 lb/ft2) MLV on top of a decoupler (usually PE foam or PU foam). CLD like STP Gold is about 0.7 lb/ft2. So you can put (do not need to stick) the STP Gold on top of 3M Thinsulate (as a decoupler) on floor or wheel arch to block tyre noise.
