from experience, i don't think you can judge how a pickup will sound on your guitar unless it has some kind of fixed variables for reference e.g les paul or strat (mahogany/rosewood, alder/rosewood/maple). then other variables will come to play - efx and amp. it's so subjective that its actually a good business to be in.
i used to have a SD Full shred that sounded sh*tty in all my guitars until i swap it to a Fender HM. it sounded like they belong together. the DiMarzio pup from the HM ends up in my Wash N1 and sounded really good.
i found that JB's a very safe bet on most guitars and Duncans have a nice mids. then again i hate single coil so it's all up to your ears. until you have that pickup in your guitar, we'll be talking it about it forever.
