Hi guys,

I'm planning to get a new pickup for my strat type guitar and I am looking at SHR-1 at the moment. my friend suggested me to look at DiMarzio as well

I play mostly punk/rock/metal. Was wondering if anyone could recommend a good pickup??

Sorry if this thread has been posted before biggrin.gif

my current set up is S-S-S T.T all stock pickups
using Aria STG series.

Thanks alot!  biggrin.gif

errr... sorry guys... i think i made u misunderstand...
i recommend u to get EMG pickup for metal...

but not EMG-SA...
EMG-SA is just a normal single coil pickup which suitable for other beside metal.. =)

i have another guitar which equiped with EMG 81 & 85 for metal use...

you have to check the routing under the pickguard first.
most cheap guitars have a swimming pool rout, so you can even put in 3 humbuckers if you can cut the pickguard for it.
whereas fenders now have a H-S-H routing under the pickguard.

yup, ARIA strat are swimming pool routing... =)

no issue on modding to SSH or HSH.

only thing need to mod is the pickguard's hole.

for practice i use either headphones thru my korg pandora px4 or a kustom tube12.
EMG81 and 85, i prefer the 85 more since its slightly more balanced sounding.
85 is alnico, 81 is ceramic.
but i just replaced the 85 in the neck of the LP with a 60A, also an alnico, cos it sounds much warmer.

for me, the 60A is THE neck pickup from EMG.
so the 85 goes into my SG bridge, cos it should help complement the SG's lighter body.
while the 81's brightness is balanced off by the LP's heavier body.
in the end both bridges should sound pretty similar.
*
waoo... how warm is EMG60A sounded like ar?
less output? better clean tone?
last time went i want to purchase my EMG81/85 in davis few years ago.
i asked davis for EMG60A, and he told me EMG don't have this model.... (-___-)

ok, seem like mahogany body worked well for 81 and sounded too bassy for 85.

for my basswood body rig, 85 just sounded nice.
by right, in order to balance up, 85 should be in brigde position and 81 in neck position for basswood.

however, i still stick to 81 in bridge.... >__<
lazy to change... it

EMG's would suffice if only one direction in terms of playing....which has will neglect some of the sweetness of 'trebleness' or clarity...this happens when compared 2 les pauls one fitted with 85/81 combo and the other with a stock 59/57 Gibson Ori pickups...

But the gibson pups still can't beat those glass shattering like from Dimarzio's or even S'Duncans....speaking of those two....anyone got experiances with Dimarzio or SD on a Les Paul body???
*
ohya, talking about treble sweetness, does EMG 60/60A have such characteristic if compare to SD/Dimarzio pickup?

I dunno about other models but as far as i cant stand it anymore where's the 81 would just make my Epi LP mumbled on neck or even bridge...

I was supposed to be bright, but then maybe my True Tone is already dark/warm etc..
*
encountered same problem before...
but after adjust the pickup height (treble side) higher, it bcome very bright and sparky tone.

Great tip...I've never tried it b4 since the bridge traditionally always higher than he neck pups....I'll try lowering it afterwards see if it got any brighter...
I've done that that can't really se any diffrence in terms of brightness...Now i've got 81 on the neck and still warm....Maybe its just my guitar...

lower down bass side doesn't give big different. but big different for treble!
in order to balance the sound, treble side have to set much closer to string.
my setting, bass side = 2mm, treble side = 1.5mm (measure from string to pickup when pressing on last fret of string)

i set it this way bcoz my guitar body is basswood.
since ur guitar body is more bassy, try to set pickup bass side >2.5mm ; treble side <1.5mm, i believe this will help to balance up some of ur guitar tone.
but remember that, most EMG pickup frequency response are scoopped "V" shape, and u also can't expect no bassy sound from neck pickup.

ohya, i had experienced to set treble side to 0.5mm. the sound become very razorblaze sharp. but can't really play when i pull backward of my floydrose. =(

i think maybe better you post a soundclip of it direct so at least i can hear what it sounds like.
and are you sure its just not your battery thats dying? usually if you play everyday with it, expect to change the batt if its a good one like energizer every 6 months.
if its those stupid ones like national or whatever, then try like 2 months tongue.gif
*
ohya, batteries also can give big impact!

everdying, did u mod ur EMG to 18 volt?

I had done to my EMG81/85, sounded more crispy at clean sound.

I'm wondering how it will sound like in EMG-SA set...
SA itself already very bright and crispy, really need to mod it or not?

EMG85 is the most balanced.
EMG81 more treble.
EMG60A for me is the perfect neck pickup from EMG, good for rhythm work, dirty solos etc.

How about compare EMG60A with other brand?
