I have a low spec computer : P3 1.1GHZ and 256MB ram
I just formatted it, and now i am looking for antivirus software to protect it.
Antivirus looking shall be use low resource to run it, so that my pc wun always too slow in responce.

SO my question is : rclxms.gif
1. what is the best AVR that require lowest resource to run ? (means running it wun slow the system down too much)
2. how to determine the resources needed by the AVR to run in system ? means how do i know how much memory each AVR will cost me? from task manager ? or any resource to check with ?

k it be updated manually as i dun have internet connection at the place i going to put it ... sorry if question sound complicated blush.gif

nod32 is a very good antivirus, used very little resource and powerful enough to keep everything at bay. i threw out my norton for it.

nod32 currently used 24MB of resources for my rig. you can check it from task manager.

Using Avast too and never caught a virus before, a bit weak on the trojan blocking, but it can detect and delete it when you do manual scanning. Constant updating to the newest version.

Wow, so many recommendations. Well, I'm currently on a low spec pc too. (Celeron 1.0GHz, 128MB SDRAM, etc) I'm have been using AVG Free for almost one year, and I've no problem with it, at all. And the first time I installed AVG Free, I was impressed with it's startup scanner (at DOS). Lol. But one thing that I can't figure out, nowadays whenever I update my AVG Free, it runs slower. I think most probably it's because of my slow processor. sam85, I'd personally recommend you to use AVG Free as well and NOD32 isn't a bad choice afterall.

How about F-prot? It takes really little resource
Ain't no free but not too expensive

Other than that I think AntiVir is quite light (free)

F-Prot... I highly not recommend that AV or at least, that is my view. In a previous test of mine, it can't detect the EICAR dummy virus, its manual scanning speed was atrocious (Hyper slow =.=). Right now it is tailing in AV comparatives test, and (not to mention for bias results in this one) is left out in top ten reviews.

AntiVir and AVAST deserve my votes. Cheers!

There's only two worth mentioning. That's bitdefender and Kaspersky. Both are light on resources and have better detection and removal methods compared to everything else on the market. Free versions? Ask yourself why there are free versions, and full versions of the same antivirus. The free versions are good for a casual scan, but it's not going to keep out the dangerous viruses. Same goes for antispyware.

So invest in a good antivirus.

clamav for windows, no real-time scanner though (manual scan required, but lowering the disk and memory load). Lightweight small installer, compatible with Windows XP (with or without service packs, i.e SP1 or SP2). Virus definition, updated daily, free (in price and liberty, freedom).

ClamWin is nice and small, but considering it to be OSS (Open Source Software), it might be slow with definition updates. I might be wrong. Cheers!

i'd say slap in an AntiVir, Avast, and pair it with a decent free Firewall like for example The Jetico firewall or Comodo Personal Firewall if you want to go the "legal" and "free" way. They don't hog your resources.

I'm not sure if a PC like that will work efficiently with NOD32 although NOD32 has a superior scan engine. Compared with Avast, i find it not as fast, during start up times.

NOD32 will work very well with the specified machine. I have installed it on an k6 machine running Windows before...no issues.

But those machines...nowadays cannot use anymore...too darn slow compared to what is available to me.

a free solution would be AVG.

a pay solution would be Nod32.

pros:
1. small footprint
2. small installer
3. the best antivirus in 2005

cons:
1. it doesn't have a standard windows interface.
2. slow startup as it will do scanning and updating before loading the os.

It is probably slow in definition update, but I don't think it has anything do with with it being a OSS (a well maintained OSS can be more updated than proprietary software even)

However, I don't recommend it to newbies because it requires some configuration and knowledge to get it working properly.

I think otherwise. Even if it is well maintained, viruses pop-out out of the blue most of the time. Can ClamWin's response time be shorter than proprietary software's required time. If so, please do tell me. I will get a copy of ClamWin. LOL. Cheers!

I'm referring to your previous generalized statement that somehow means "OSS software are slow in update", not specific into any Open source Antivirus or ClamWin

It is bound to be like that. How do you expect an Antivirus to open Password protected Compressed Files? It is not a Brute-Force-Search machine, you know. Not to mention, if the Compressed file is corrupted, it can only scan to a certain extend. So, if other AVs don't make any noise, consider yourself lucky to have a truthful AV like NOD32 that tells you its cans and can'ts. Cheers!

Still prefer NOD32 especially since ver. 2.50. Still low in resource but yet can detect many virus's on the fly and also malware. I'd prefer to have one low resource anti-virus and a good anti spyware scanner then to have hewg monsterous AV which can do all.

frankly speaking,
i wasn't a NOD32 fan initially.

Use to test Kaspersky, love it but really memory hungry..slow down my notebook 1.4GHz Centrino Twinhead
Then i try MKS_Virus 2005(from poland)....it was fantastic...a bit better than kaspersky but come with firewall..registry checking...etc....full suite,i think, but never the less...support is not that good.

Since tested the NOD32 v2.5....it is really light on my system,i just love it even now.
Have tried the BitDefender v10....quite good but really memory hogging and slow down your system..

I have try both,NOD32 and BitDefender in my notebook..disable each Antivirus each time..and i can confirm BitDefender is really running heavy on my system.

The good point for BiDefender,u can purchase from someone in lowyat for mere RM38,i think...it is value for money.
As for NOD32,it is RM128...

flex.gif

AS for malware and trojan.. i have tried Spyware Sweeper,Spyware Doctor and AVG AntiSpware(Ewido,formerly).....for me,Spyware Doctor seem to slow my system a bit .

Anti-spyware options

Free combo
1. Spybot
2. Adaware

If you're running NOD32 and Firefox you're pretty much safe even without an online scanner like Windows Defender or Ewido, unless you always surf for p0rn or don't follow basic rules of online safety.

Buy
Webroot Spy Sweeper or Spyware Doctor
Both are equally good but Webroot just edges out the doctor.
Both are RAM hogs as well.

I feel AIO solution would be something like Zone Lab's AIO or Bit Defender but they're resource hungry applications.

Nod32 is the way to go for install and forget anti-virus solutions. Usually install it at non-techie types computer, it does a good enough job without asking too many questions.

It is not a bad but "suite" = AIO = resource hog.
Symantec and McAfee fallen from grace lately.
Still in top 5 but people like Kaspersky, Eset, BD have come up.

Installed BitDefender v10 on a Celeron 600 Mhz with 198MB RAM..
No difference before without running any antivirus and now with
BitDefender running in the background...
No lagging etc..
Only will chuckle for seconds when it updates itself..

Same goes to other AV, when it updates itself..
