The backplate was for decoration. No pads

N hmm marketing ad from amd
Was this meant for tx??
[attachmentid=4500100]

wouldnt there be nothing for the backplate to dissipate heat from? hmm.gif

most of the time backplate has thermal pads for the RAM modules IINM

This time the problem aren't RAM module, but the VRM.

yeah but for Fury X, wouldnt the VRAM module be on the die itself? i mean, non HBM cards have their VRAM module soldered on back of PCB, which is why the backplate helps

but theres no back VRAM module from the pictures ive seen, so backplate isnt necessary

Stick some thermal padding at the high heat zone at the back and in contact with backplate (metal?) will help a little than none I think? hmm.gif

Putting a backplate on it without padding might actually entrap a layer of air in between and worsen the cooling of the VRM?
https://cms-images.idgesg.net/images/articl...592012-orig.jpg

So its either put it with thermal pad or else better remove it.
*
well they are metal after all, might be heat conductive hmm.gif

Guys - I know who the person is. I ask WHAT is it about, as in the tessellation part and all.
*
in a nutshell,

>cstkl1 is unhappy that johor foo is not displaying real performance scores as per standard
>asks johor foo to rebench
>johor foo doesnt want
>cstkl1 deems it as being untruthful to the scores as AMD doesnt do well in tessellation, with Unigine Heaven very heavy on tessellation

and it goes on until today

I played Dying Light and Son of Rome on my cousin's computer with HD7790.

Oh man, I can't stand it lol, only managed 30-40 fps with lower settings at 1080p. Playing for 60fps for so long ruins me sad.gif

the issue is only for HDMI and DP users

its where the drivers are unable to distinguish whether are you connecting to TV (limited) or monitor (full)

my HD7850 died. What is a comparable replacement? I dont need top of the line model, as I only play dota on this weekend pc. Probably something costing about RM700?
*
you dont even need a RM700 card to play Dota 2 sweat.gif

just grab any card ranging around 500~ should do

test on another rig to confirm.
if the GPU is dead, you can try microwave method as a last ditch, but most probably dead for good if it really is the card.
*
erm, you dont microwave electronics sweat.gif

youll destroy your microwave together with the parts that you were trying to revive

you dont microwave anything with metal, it's more like pre-heat the microwave, then leave it there to resolder things.

*
no no, microwave is the wrong term itself. baking the GPU isnt

there is a difference with conventional/convection oven and microwave oven sweat.gif

Ah thx , ClockBlocker helps alot.

Just want to ask , the thermal pads are reusable right once I remove the Vapor-X Cooler ? Let's say I want to replace the pad is this type suitable ?

https://forum.lowyat.net/topic/739435

Can I use Thermal Paste designed for CPU for my 7970 ?

Here is the paste I plan to use.

http://imgur.com/xLHY1jl

Thanks,  sorry asked so much questions haha , new to GPU maintenance stuff.
*
theyre the same, you can use it as per goldfries reply

just remember CPU and GPU have different application techniques

GPU its better to put abit more paste than CPU's tiny rice grain technique

This kind of problem makes me think about selling all my cards & upgrade to Fury X
But what's the real world improvement of Fury X over R9 390X?
Does the HBM really make a huge difference?

Also, wouldn't the downgrade from 8GB to 4GB reduce the game quality?
I'm only using 1 screen though, at Full HD, not 2K or 4K

And as I've explained earlier, I'm an old man, so please understand that I really need some guidance before making the switch to Fury X
Not really old la, just 32 hahahahaha laugh.gif
*
first you need to trace the problem first, what if you bought the newer card but still have no improvements?

HBM makes a diff, but just not yet. very few games can saturate GDDR5 bandwidth. HBM with near 10x bandwidth is overkill unless you are attempting the highest gaming quality (4K, Ultra, 8xMSAA etc etc)

ill explain abit VRAM for clarification. (in my own method lol)

>game streams game stuff on the fly while playing game
>game stuff are stored on GPU VRAM temp before usage
>in the event where you somehow overkilled on overloading way beyond what your VRAM can handle,
>this is where game stuttering occurs cause not enough memory
>when not enough memory, the GPU is forced to use system RAM to stream the game stuff (which is slower)

so if youre playing games that doesnt even utilise alot of VRAM, theres hardly any diff between 4GB and 8GB
