hello all,

coming back to malaysia for vacation, and i thought to get my dad a radar detector for his birthday seeing as he likes to speed a lot. unlike in US though, dont know if such things are common in malaysia, and what bands are used. his use case is mainly to avoid the speed cameras.

would this be a good buy? and if so, what bands do police/speed cameras use?

thanks for the info!

What are you saying?

Getting your dad a radar detector for your dad for his birthday cause he likes to speed??? The very least is advice him to drive slower that should be the more logical thing to do. Come on. Getting him that it's just encouraging him to drive fast and putting himself in harms way for him and for others.

Getting him an apple watch will make more sense

Buying a radar detector = RM1000++
Getting a saman = RM300

U do the math.

welp. guess that makes up my decision for me sweat.gif

out of curiosity though, does malaysian police even use radar guns? mainly i see the AES cameras, but no guns. if so, does anyone know what band they are?

Speaking from my own experience, I brought one radar detector back from USA many years ago and tried it in Malaysia. But when I passed by Slim River AES camera which I wasn't paying attention how fast I was going, I was actually doing 120kph but my radar detector doesn't make any sound, but the camera flashed.

So my thought is, the AES camera is using some kind of detector on the ground to calculate the vehicle speed and not using radar.

I cannot speak the same for radar gun that the police are using under the bridge since I have not experienced it myself.

AES use sensor on the road...
but hand held speed radar might work using the detector...

very interesting. i guess since more AES than radar gun, makes even less sense to get a detector, unlike in US where handheld radar is very popular.
