Tips to Survive Major Steam Sales

Rule #1:
From now until the LAST DAY of the sale, if a game is on sale as a daily deal or flash deal, you can buy it. If it is only "on sale" through the entire sale, pass. Do not buy. Save your money (you may need it).

Rule #2:
Check each day for the daily deals, and monitor flash deals. As games come up that you want, you can get them. Just continue to exercise self control for games that are not a daily/flash deal.

Rule #3:
You can purchase the large packs, such as the THQ pack or Square-Enix/Eidos pack at any time if you wish. It is extremely unlikely that those bundles will be discounted any further, even though individual games in those packs may become daily deals. If you want a bundle, go for it. Lots of games, excellent price.

Rule #4:
On the LAST DAY of the sale, Steam traditionally makes its daily deals an encore of the most popular daily deals from the previous days. Go nuts. Buy everything you wanted. Other games are almost never on the daily deals during the last day, at this point, it is safe to buy anything else you've been waiting on.

Age of Wonders 3: yay or nay? Any players of the game so far? The base is acceptable enough now but the DLCs (expansions) are still quite pricey; something worth to grab now or should I just wait for winter?

If i were you, I'll get the DLCs as they are old school games sort of expansion with good amount of content. The base game is pretty dull due to each factions are a bit more of the same, to be honest where I played about 20 hours then clocked another 80 with Eternal Lords.

Golden Thrones is a bit of a disappointment to me, it only adds one new race which are Halflings like Hobbits from LOTR. This race works differently from other races in the game where they have a Luck mechanics that can have higher chance to evade damage the happier the race is. Halflings are quite fun to play as or even fight with, IMO which made the expansion worth it. There is an end game neutral race, Naga is also an interesting addition as their units are designed to be quite different from core game races. Golden Thrones is a small expansion, I think it is still worth it for Naga and Halflings.

Eternal Lords is the big expansion with a lot of new content. 2 new races that plays quite differently, Tigrans(tiger people that can climb walls) and tanky Frostlings that has their own list of interesting units. A new class with completely different mechanics, Necromancer that can be used with any race in the game is also added. They dont need to farm for food and happiness which made them different from the core games classes. Quite a difficult class to play as because they expand slowly but their class unique units are quite interesting. The game also added a new feature called Cosmic Events that randomly buffs and debuff everyone on the world map that made the game more dynamic, you need to always be on alert on what is happening to take advantage of it. There is also random neutral armies that ranges from angry evil penguin army to massive undead armies roaming on the map occasionally that also made the game more dynamic.

I didnt like Endless Legend at all. The empire building is good but I really dislike how Amplitude does combat in all their games. It felt awkward and dull to fight in all their games with Endless Space having the worst combat I ever had in a strategy game. People always complained about their poor combat, they seemed like they never care to improve it in newer games much. I want to like Endless Legend, I just find it really tough to like it.

Company heroes 2, worth it? or should i get civilization 5?

Depends on what you want, CoH2 is good for skirmish with AI and some casual multiplayer but all the campaign content, including Ardennes Assault kinda sucks. CoH1 has far better game and a decent mod scene.

i feel CoH2 still kinda overpriced.. need many of the DLCs to feel like a "complete" game. Will easily spend up to 50 bucks or more if buy all of them even on current sales. IMO CoH1 is a much better game... battle feels more real and the setup is better too.
*
Thats false, most DLC commanders and skins are largely optional. You need to buy what you want like core game and Western Front Armies for skirmish and multiplayer, core game or Ardennes Assault and Theater of War for single player. Other content are largely useless because most of them are nerfed.

CoH2 had improved a lot which it is a pretty fun game now but I still prefer the pacing in CoH1.

QUOTE(failed.hashcheck @ Jun 19 2015, 07:06 PM)
get civ.
The way CoH2 maintained currently seems like this game going to be alive and kickin much longer than expected.
*
CoH2 is only on it 3rd out of 5 years, long way to go.

I am done with this Steam sales, total expense is within the budget.

It is going to be bad for the other half of the year, considering there are quite a lot of games that I want are coming out.

currently contemplating whether to buy civ5 brand new world expansion, endless legends, or eu4, what do you think? have you played endless legend?
*
If it is all 3 choices, I'll go with Civ V BNW. I didnt like Endless Legend, due to it's odd combat mechanics and really awful AI. EU4, didnt like it too, as it feel like overly complex to even learn while the pacing is way too slow for me.

I personally recommend Age of Wonders 3 over EU4 or EL as someone who prefers turned based tactical games over pure empire building.

Project CARS 2 is at least 3 years from release.

They are pulling another crowd funding because it worked well for the first game.

If they are going ahead with Sepang in the sequel, I'll be part of making the virtual version. Probably will be laser scanned.

Hitman: Absolution worth it?
I never play any hitman game before
*
I didnt like it at all. Absolution's levels are linear if not small compared to the older game of the series which it isnt as fun for me. However, my main problem with the game is, the stealth/disguise system is a little bit buggy where enemies can spot you from far very easily that ruined the whole game for me.

I rather buy Blood Money or wait for the new game.

hey guys, i have a quick question. since i moved to the uk, i was wondering if i bought any games here from the malaysian steam store, do you think i can play it in the uk if i activated the game here?

don't want to go through what i did, i had to rebuy a bunch of my games, cause i had so many SEA region locked games and spent over rm 400 on them..
*
I did with all the games bought from Malaysia store in oversea are still playable. My debit card is still linked with Malaysian store while I am not physically in Malaysia. The main thing is, let Steam save your payment details. Then, you can always buy from Malaysian store wherever you are.

I think only some games, like Just Cause 3 that is region locked to Malaysia.

You need to attach a payment details when you are in Malaysia, then, only you can buy cheap games from MY store anywhere in the world by using the same payment details.

even having a bank card in malaysia wouldnt change the gift so i can play it outside of SEA. so i'll just stick with amazon, even at 100$, its not that much more than the malaysian store.
*
It doesnt matter if you are using Malayisan bank card or not. Any card will be fine, as long as the payment details is attached in Malaysia to the Steam Malaysia store.

The main thing is, attach your billing details in Malaysia and then buy games for yourself when you are overseas. Not buying them as gifts.Steam store will always redirect you back to Malaysia store because your payment details is saved in Malaysia.

his going back to uk soon, he won't be able to play games with ip region locked like BO3

As far as I can see from the store page, BO3 is not region locked. It doesn't have the same blue tag like Just Cause 3.

I bought BO2 with RM price tag when I was in overseas, I have no issues playing the game in overseas. I also both some cheap indie games overseas as a gift and sent to another account, that account can't redeem it overseas but after redeeming it in Malaysia, the game is playable just fine so far. The region lock is only applies to activation, not playing after activation.

bo2 wasn't region locked and it was release when cross region trading was still okay. if you saw the screenshot i posted a few pages ago, you can see clearly its ip locked and region locked EVEN though there is no notice on the store page which i think is false advertising.
*
I bought BO2 on April 2015 when I am not in Malaysia and I still can play BO2 overseas where I clocked 30 hours overseas. Also, I bought every single game from the last Steam sale in oversea, none of them are region locked. I am still playing them overseas and in Malaysia just fine.

At the same time, I bought quite a few games before I left Malaysia in March, none of them are IP blocked when I tried to play them overseas. I bought Homeworld Remastered on February in Malaysia, I still managed to play it in overseas the last time on 27th of May 2015.

Other than Just Cause 3, there is no IP block for games bought in Steam MY.

Heck, I even changed my saved payment information overseas because Standard Chartered blocked my card to an oversea card. Yet, I still can buy and play games bought on Steam MY store with no problem at all when I am in oversea.

You just do not get, dont you?

I had said numerous time, do not gift it to yourself or ask anyone to buy it for you as a gift because gifting is region locked, not games bought for yourself from the store. You have to buy the game for your account with Malaysia payment information. There is no cross region trading if you are buying the game for yourself.

as you can see the red text, the game is ip locked to SEA, when he move back to uk the game will be locked

not all games will say on the store page that the game would be ip locked
*
The reason of that is simple, because the game was gifted to his account, not he bought the game straight for his own account.

If that red text is true, why I still can play all my Steam games in overseas that were bought via Steam Malaysia store?

You need to buy the game and attach it to your account, not via a gift so that there arent any IP block for games bought straight to your account when playing it. If there are IP block when playing, Steam will display a warning message before you buy it.

Then, now you said he is not from Malaysia.

QUOTE(alex82 @ Jul 16 2015, 05:00 PM)
fatcat is not from msia, so he can't buy the game himself on my steam store.

he already have payment tie to europe
*
I dont get it, what is he stopping him from attaching a payment method to Steam MY store when he is physically in Malaysia?

Once you attached a payment method to a specific Steam store, you can always buy games from that country's Steam store because that is your saved payment and Steam will automatically reroute you back to the store you saved your info with. For example, I saved my payment details with a Malaysian address, I can buy games from the Malaysian Steam store with RM when I am in China. Steam will always reroute me back to Steam MY store after I login in China. I had not encountered any sort of IP block from playing so far with buying games from Steam MY store when I am in overseas.

I bought a lot of games from Steam MY store, why isnt there any IP block when I played my games in Australia?

If you payment is tied to EU, then, remove it via Steam Account Information when you are physically in Malaysia and reattach another payment information that is based on your Malaysian address. Once you had your Malaysian details saved to your Steam account, you can buy games from Steam MY regardless where you are in the world. If a particular game has IP block, then, buy that game elsewhere which I am doing the same with Just Cause 3. Then, for games that are not IP blocked, I will always buy from Steam MY.

Am I explaining it in a way that is so difficult to understand?

i don't think using a Malaysian payment method will change the fact that some gifts are region locked. even if you buy it for yourself and not as a gift, the game would still be subject to the same region locking.
*
If that is true, then, why Black Ops 2 isnt region locked for me when I bought it 2 months ago? It make no sense to region lock a game that you bought it for yourself. I bought many games from MY store when I am not even physically in Malaysia, I had not experienced region lock for any of my games.

Even if they are region locking a game that you buy for your own account, you can always refund it.

Whatever floats your boat then.

There are plenty of good racing games out there anyway. There are 2 games that does open wheels far better than Codemaster's F1.

Codemaster strength lies on those rally cars and also those door to door racing touring cars. Their F1 is pretty awful in my opinion because they lack of sense of speed and fidelity in simulation.

Try Formula Corsa mod in Assetto Corsa or play Game Stock Car Extreme, both game has the best F1 cars IMO.
