The game was originally released in 1999 for the original PlayStation, and is basically the best-loved title in the series. It has since been re-released on both Sony’s PlayStation Network and Windows PC, and it was also the first Final Fantasy title to have a 3D world, albeit one created by low-resolution polygons that resulted in a blocky, piloted look. Final Fantasy VII sold 10.9 million units as of March 2015 from combination of PS1, PC and Steam Sales when combining data from Ars Technica and Steamspy, which possibly makes it the most successful title in the whole Final Fantasy franchise.
Final Fantasy VII is one of those games I’ve playedd more times than is reasonable to admit in public, and anyone who’s a fan of Squall and Seifer and their epic rivalry can probably say the same. Given this new remake, it looks like I’ll be playing it again. I will definitely not be looking forward to Aerith's death scene again, hooboy. That's gonna be another massive tear-fest. Wishing for a slight story change might be too ambitious but who knows? Given SquareEnix's statement that Final Fantasy VII's remake is coming first to Playstation 4 makes me believe that it could be coming to Xbox One and Steam so we'll see if we can get more information on that.
The new remake doesn’t have a specific release date yet.
