In an article on gamespot today it was brought to my attention that the latest fall update causes bricking in modded 360's. In other words modded 360's will become expensive paperweights! Additionally there are some rare cases of bricking in unmodded 360's too but its rare.....however this problem can be fixed if sent for repairs....please be warned...and here's the link.............http://www.gamespot.com/news/show_blog_entry.php?topic_id=25101615&sid=6160771

P.S. I think MS intentionally did this!!

Yes.. main thing is.. the update actually flashes to a ROM so during that time NOTHING bad must happen when it actually flashes.

bricking if im not mistaken is modifying the flash card of the 360's firmware. making it able to play pirated games. please correct me if im wrong guys.

No lar. Bricking means turning your xbox360 into a brick

If failed update and cannot use anymore, its basically becomes a brick or paperweight or door stopper or wadever u can think of.

QUOTE
Brick is the slang term for an electronic device which cannot function (or has been rendered useless by a damaged firmware). This comes from the fact that the device in question can be considered as useful as a brick.

The firmware can be damaged by accidents during firmware update or by malicious software.

holy crap! at first, when i read that modded consoles will be brickified after the update, i was like..wooohey! go MS!

but then some original consoles got brickified too?? i mean..WHAT??? what's the purpose of the update then?? shouldn't like MS give some warning first?

so tell me guys, what could be the possible causes of update failure? maybe disconnected while updating?we're using tmnuts here so anything could happen..

but well, eventho my update went well but still i get the feeling similar to when u take a picture and later find a ghostly apparition beside u in the final photo.

sweat.gif

hopefully future updates are not this scary..or i shall retain from updating until no negative issues come up.

thumbup.gif

but hey wmv streaming 'out of the box' rules!

There are 2 parts to the update..

first... you'll see "Downloading Update, Do Not Turn Off Your HDD, etc. etc." that's when it's downloading the update. If it disconnects, or lightning strikes then.. you'll be fine. I've done that before.

after that you'll see "Applying Update, Do not etc. etc. etc." THIS is the part that must happen without problems, THIS is the thing you must make sure succeeds without fuss, cause THIS is when you ROM gets Flashed, interupt this and... tongue.gif

So far no reports of dead 360s from here I think.... It's probably those people who are suspected of flashing their consoles to play ahem games.

The dashboard update is pretty nice. Easier on the eyes tongue.gif

ok first of all, I will not go as far as to say I don't play pirated games at all, I do , my whole PS2 library is nearly all pirated.. i do buy ORI games like FFXII, Dragon Quest..

but for x360, i've totally signed of modding, why? What is the fun of x360 without online play smile.gif ?

For me, as long as the next gen consoles offer a solid onlline platform (like LIVE and not PS2's feeble attempt) I will support ori tongue.gif

Ok, this is off-topic but just wodnering how come I can't get SFII on LIVE? I can't find it ..

okay2 i'm sorry bro xeno! well as a defense, i didn't mean to blame tmnet..but knowing that sometimes the connection is unstable, anything could happen. but well now knowing that the update can only go wrong while actually flashing the ROM and not while downloading it so no worries then!

and yeah without tmnet we won't have live..wonder when could we experience higher bandwidth like our neighbor...that'd be cool! smile.gif

So far, all of you have applied the update without any issues?
I'm a little hesitant after reading some scary reports on xboxic.com. Looks like quite a lot of people using un-modded boxes got screwed as well.

well.. if you don't update you can't logon back to Live then.. anyway.. oh yeah.. the problem is fixed already what.. seee..

Edit: An updated version of the Fall Update is now available on Xbox Live which has elminated issues relating to new or refurbished consoles failing after applying the Fall Update. Users who have already applied the Fall Update and are seeing an error message should call their local Xbox Support telephone number. If you already have the update, you will not be prompted for another update.
