How do you know which service someone is on after mnp? Will they notify us if the active10/FnF etc numbers change?

I want to know more about the 365days validity when u switch to digi prepaid. Can i go out and buy a new hotlink/celcom starter pack then switch and get the validity? Or do you have to own the number for a set amount of time?
