Similar thing happens to me when the Roche duel. I thought he will restore hp and mp but never knows in hard he restore hp only. End up I have to evade almost all his attacks.

What I mean is once enter collosseum, each battle will restore 50% hp and mp
As for Rosche duel, I saw guide in online say will restore HP for me, but for my case don't restore at all
Luckily is the last boss, so I spam use MP only, counter all the way

MP won't recover at all in Hard Mode unless start new chapter or smashing Shinra Boxes or u match up with Materia. Aerith's soul drain will lead to smack of the decade more than actually recovering, so conservation is the key thru all Hard Modes. Plus if you learn how to mix it up with most of the character abilities with the correct materia, you won't need to use magic unnecessarily. I nvr carry Revival Materia up until Chapter 18 due to the boss fights are long, in other cases I will rather let the team gets wipe out and starts all over again, that's how I get my platted game at 150 hours... lol
You can equip revival earring As for MP, let it slowly recover during battle, use MP in boss battle only
I rarely use soul drain as well, mostly use arcane ward, fleeting familiar, ray of judgement and atb ward
but they hardly will die as each of them equiped with 2 HP and MP UP materia (max AP)
