On another note, girls, if you're coming for holiday in Bangkok after 22 December 2006, you can have to chance to purchase lingerie wear, designed by famous Thai supermodel Metinee "Luk Kade" Kingpayom, and manufactured by Jintana Co. Together, the brand name is called "Metinee by Jintana"

"Metinee by Jintana" will be launched at department stores and discount stores throughout the country on Dec 22. The products, priced from 300 to 1,000 baht.

Personally, I used to buy these products for my girl (now ex-gf), and they look really sexy and lovely. The designs are excellent, and comfort is good (according to her)

Be careful when you walk along Soi Nana (Nana Lane), especially in front of the Grace Hotel. They will ask you if you're interested in sex services by Russian / Uzbekistan girls. Some of them are actually hard to resist, with tall frame and long legs.

Nana is the hub for Middle Eastern tourist. You'll find plenty of Mid-East food outlets, and the kebabs are pretty good too. There's night shopping along the main road, but most of the time you'll probably see lots of walking "women of the night". Also lot's of xxx DVDs on sale there.

Sawasdee krup guys  tongue.gif

Currently I'm ini Bangkok for a business trip, will be here until Friday.
Unfortunately this trip is working purpose, I only have spare time to walk around at night.

Frankly speaking I'm more interested in sight-seeing (especially to religious places with exotic buildings). And I'd like to buy some special christmas presents for my frens.

Any place you guys can recommend?

(I wish to buy some cute, special christmas gift for my female friends. I went to Siam discovery, MBK & Central Point yesterday, and honestly only a shop called B2S in Central Point offers what I want. Any other places that I can find those cute cute special thingy?)

Khob khun krup then  smile.gif

To add on to ihawk's list, there's also this shop called "Loft". Sells lots of cute cute stuff too. There's one in Siam Paragon, level 4 or 5 I think. Also another at Siam Discovery.

Hey since you're in Bangkok at this time, maybe you can get in touch with "samurai1337" http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showuser=6771 and hang out a bit with him. Heard from him that work isn't as hectic as it was imagined, and I'm guessing he'll have some free time to throw around.

LOL! I'm quoted!!!!!!!!

Yeah rite, it's not that hectic, at least still got time at nite. PM me if you want my Thailand phone number smile.gif I'm just staying at Centrepoint (Wireless Road)

So far I haven't visited much places yet except
- Taking a walk nearby the Nana area (very quiet that time, bought some road side food)
- Chidlom Central (high class shopping mall it seems, didn't walk much just had a dinner there)
- Suan Lum Night Bazaar (quite an interesting place, nice food there. But things aren't that cheap to be frank)
*
Yo brother, haven't visited much? It's just your FIRST DAY in Bangkok, and you've already covered areas that took me 1 week to visit!

Nana = quiet? I think you went too early. Try walking there after 10PM. You'll get a shock of your life. More like Chow Kit area

Central Chidlom is nice, but yeah, the stuffs there are for high society people. I sometimes walk around there, just to "appear" high class... but never really did buy anything at all

Suan Lum Night Bazaar might be tourist area, but if you know how to bargain, you can get good deals, almost as good as in Chatujak.

Since you'll probably spend the weekend in Bangkok, don't miss out on the Chatujak weekend market. Take the BTS to Mochit station, and it's right there.

Enjoy your work-holiday trip there, dude!

Go hunting in MBK complex. It's like Sungai Wang Plaza. Lots of phones there.

But I think the Malaysian hand phones are better. At least you can send SMS in Chinese. If you buy phones from Thailand, they might not support Chinese, and key pad is cluttered with Thai characters (like mine):

well, i've been living there my whole life, i consider a very livable place, everything is convenient and reachable using the BTS and MRT trains. very easy place to get around. food is undoubtedly great, ppl are friendly. problems are its pretty damn congested most of the day, so driving is a hassle. though i have to say its been getting better these past years, new governor is a hard worker. regarding crime, you read about it in the news, but i've never seen anything violent happening to anyone i know in 20 years. mostly pick-pockets in crowded places. i've never heard of these 'snatch thefts' like i do here though. other than that its the usual rape/murder cases. but in general? everyone seems to feel safe roaming the streets of bkk, night or day, simply because its a city that never sleeps !

as for the bombings last night, i doubt it'll happen again. they were all planned to coincide with new years, to discredit someone regardless of who. most my friends are still going next month though, they dont seem to care. it is however up to the individual person. some are more daring and adventurous than others biggrin.gif
*
I have do agree 100% with him. In fact, I personally feel safer in Bangkok than in KL, after being here for 3 years.

News of the bombings did come to a shock, and everyone strongly condemns the culprit(s) who did it. Although the impact on the tourism industry isn't harsh, should the bombings continue on like this, things will not look good for long.

Hope the authorities can close this case as soon as possible. Mom's getting worried for no reason now, even when I tell her I'm literally locked in my own apartment. Speaking of which, one of the explosions occurred at Klong Toei market, which is pretty near to my condominium... sweet! Of course, I was in Ram Intra last night attending a house party when the news broke.

Hey guys. Does the bombing happens anywhere near pratunam or chatucak area? Because im going the 25th. Pretty scared tho
*
One of the New Year's Eve bombings happened at Victory Monument, which is probably the nearest to Pratunam area.

In most places around town, garbage bins have been removed for fear of bombs. Generally though, the atmosphere remains calm, despite numerous bomb hoax and panic scares around.

Rumors are going around that a second coup might take place, but then again, in such situations, anything goes.

I personally think nothing drastic will happen, and you shouldn't feel aggravated by what happened in New Year's Eve. Though so, always stay alert and avoid suspicious looking areas.

for ppl that have been there lately, where do u guys stay? which area? mind to provide the name of hotel and cost per night? thanks! smile.gif
will be there in cny, but still havent book for hotel yet, prefer area = sukhumvit
*
When you refer to Sukhumvit, it's actually the name of a road, which stretches very long from Siam city center all the way to Ekkamai / On Nut area.

You can sub-divide Sukhumvit into three main parts:

Upper Sukhumvit

From Sukhumvit Soi 1 - Soi 15 (Soi means 'street' or 'lorong'). Closest to the Siam center vicinity, which is the heart of Bangkok city

Middle Sukhumvit

From Sukhumvit Soi 16 - Soi 30. Slightly further from city center but not too far off.

Lower Sukhumvit

The far end of Sukhumvit Rd, which is pretty far from Siam area

Nonetheless, the BTS Skytrain (LRT) actually runs in parallel with the Sukhumvit Road, providing you with easy access to most areas in Bangkok. Also, with the new underground MRT, coverage spans even further.

What is your preferred budget for the hotel cost per night?

Also, for those who are curious to observe something unique:

Try walking around Bangkok on Monday. You'll see a majority of Thais (and foreigners like me) wearing yellow.

Quiz: Find out why this phenomenon is happening.

If the rate is 5%. We spend BHT5000, VAT @ 5% = BHT250, then less BHT1000 processing fee; does this mean we need to pay extra BHT750....like this rugi lah.  shocking.gif

Since we are on the topic of visa to Thailand, I'll provide some brief regulations.

Visa exemption for South East Asian countries

For most members of ASEAN (not sure about the status of Myanmar though), a person travelling into Thailand for purpose of tourism does not require any visa. All that is needed is a valid passport. The duration of stay allowed under the visa exemption is 30 days. This means that any tourist can remain in the kingdom for not more than 30 days per entry. If you would like to continue your stay, you can either:

- Apply for extension at a cost of THB1,900 for 10 days
- Fly out and fly back in again (also known as a visa run). This will allow you to get another 30 day visa exemption

Curbing the visa runs

Prior to October 2006, the visa regulations of Thailand have been rather relaxed, and many individuals were misusing the free visa exemptions to work illegally in Thailand. In an effort to weed out such aliens, the immigration department have tightened the visa rules.

Under the latest law, individuals from visa exemption countries will no longer have "unlimited" visa exemptions, and has been reduced to 90 days per 180 days. This means that you can have 3 visa exemption entries every half year, and once the 90 day quota is used up, you will not be allowed to enter Thailand using the visa exemption. When that happens, you will need proper business or tourist visa (applicable for a fee)

Anyway, I doubt anyone would spend more than 90 days within a period of 180 days solely for the purpose of tourism, unless something fishy is cooking.

Guys and girls, taxi from airport to city should not cost more than 300/350 toll and 50 baht surcharge included.

One mistake you MUST NOT make is to take one of the limos [unless that's what you want specifically about 900-1000 bht into city].

Go down to ground level [1st floor] to take the public taxis.

For an example, airport to upper sukhumvit [soi1 to soi20 etc] takes me about 300 everything in.

Thing is, you should try to convince the driver to take the 'motorway' [the thais call it moterway] or else they'll take the longer route [bangna-trat highway].

But 'locals' like me know which exit to take to avoid unnecessary tolls and quicker routes. So the rule is, take public taxi, ask them to get on moterway, and you'll save money and time. Even if they take a slightly longer route, +-100 baht is not exactly a lot when you're on holiday !

Added on March 1, 2007, 9:18 pmbtw what's on soi polo chicken?
*
Very well said, brother!

The motorway is the best, especially if you are going towards town centre / Sukhumvit / Rama 9 vicinity.

If you're heading towards Rama 3 / Bangna / southern Bangkok, opt for the Banga-Trat route.

A note on the public taxi stands on the lowest level - there aren't any proper booths of counters, but merely tables where authorised airport personnel will assist you in telling the taxi your destination. They come pretty well equip with maps and English-Thai translations of well known locations within the city (especially hotels).

Sometimes, you might find one taxi stand queue too long. Don't be a fool and stand there waiting, but walk further on and find one that does not have such a long queue. I usually find that the ones on the left side of the airport (towards the end) are less crowded.

Another tip is to go upstairs to catch one of the incoming taxis dropping off passengers - but this is only recommended for seasoned travellers who are confident in shaking off the occasional taxi mafia patrolling the area to protect the interests of their brethrens. I come in and out Swamp-napoom airport very frequently so that's the risk/potential hassle I'm willing to take.

With that, you save THB50. Woo hoo!

(I sometimes do that too when I don't have any large suitcase)

You can head straight to Khao San Rd and start looking around that place. There are a couple of cheap hostels/guest houses around there. It's not a peak season now, so there shouldn't be much trouble finding for accommodation. Room rates can be as cheap as RM35 a night.

If you've got a sensitive stomach, you might want to be careful on what you eat around in Bangkok. Perhaps getting a hepatitis injection might be recommended. Not all stalls are deemed as "sanitary"

Also be careful about the spicy food around. Don't get too adventurous on chillies.

The latest price list for gas and fuel in Thailand can be found here

http://www.eppo.go.th/retail_prices.html

In Malaysia, we usually have:

- Leaded
- Unleaded
- Diesel

However, in Thailand, they have many types of fuel. The main ones are:

- Gasohol 91
- Gasohol 95
- Benzin 91 (Unleaded Regular, Octane number 91)
- Benzin 95 (Unleaded Premium, Octane number 95)
- Diesel

Please check with your car manufacturer on which type of gas suits your car

sezretz, you need to get yourself well prepared for the Golden Triangle route. I assume you are planning to take the Chiang Mai - Chiang Rai - Mae Hong Son scenic route. Bear in mind that this route is very dangerous, with plenty of blind corners, narrow roads and also deadly cliffs. Furthermore, it's year end, and you'll probably run into moderate fog/mist.

Make sure you stock up some cooking stuff. Once you enter this route, you are not going to be able to find much food stalls/accommodation along the way. Keep some snacks like bread, cakes in the car. If you can, bring along some gas canister and billy tins for cooking noodles and such.

You also don't want to be stuck on an empty fuel tank. Don't take chances and try to push your mileage to the maximum. If you stumble upon a gas station even when you've got half tank, it's a good idea to fill it up. Remember, petrol gauges are somewhat exponential in measurements.

If you have a GPS device or cell phone that supports GPS, that would come in extremely handy. Road signs are predominantly in Thai, so pay extra attention to warning signs.

Finally, avoid driving at night. If I'm not mistaken, there is a curfew law around the border zones, and you might be stopped by the border patrol if you're seen moving around in the wee hours at night

don't wear red shirt if you're going out!

Add on to the statement: Don't wear RED or YELLOW shirt whatsoever.

Reporting right in the city of Bangkok, my personal advice to all who wish to travel to Bangkok this week: Try and reschedule your plans. The situation here may get worse. Already since this morning, military forces have started firing shots and dispersing the protesters. Lots of tyres and buses were set ablaze and many intersections have been closed. Thankfully it's the Songkran festival, so traffic is generally light.

Getting taxis will be harder too, as most taxi drivers are supporters of Thaksin and are involved in the red-shirt protest.

Songkran (Water festival) celebrations in Bangkok have been cancelled, and the mood is rather quiet. So quiet that I can hear repeated gun fire from afar.

The military chief in charge of the Emergency Situation in Bangkok here has just given a national broadcast announcing that if necessary, the army will not hesitate to use force to control the situation. He urges everyone to stay indoors and avoid going out if unnecessary.

I will keep this thread updated from time to time about the situation here.
