Windows Live Messenger 8.1 Beta is released. It is what we call a dot release, the changes are not as major as in a major release (go figure) they are small updates to the existing stuff in Messenger.

Important Details:

What does Beta mean? Beta means we are still working on it. We know it isn't perfect* but we want great users like you to try it out and let us know what you think before we release it to the rest of the world. If you would prefer to stick with Windows Live Messenger 8.0 - we still think you are great!

What's new with Windows Live™ Messenger 8.1 Beta

. Redesigned, smarter contact cards give you more data about and easier access to your friends
. Your display name, status and personalization roam with you to any computer
. Try PC-to-phone calling with two free calls to virtually any phone in the world*
. Better server performance
. Automatic updates
. Improved sign-in performance

Don't really need it, I don't even bother about contact card thingy as nobody seems to utilize it

. Your display name, status and personalization roam with you to any computer
Good one! And I hope there's display pic roaming too! (but not so possible considering it's a picture instead of text information - consumes more storage)

. Try PC-to-phone calling with two free calls to virtually any phone in the world*
Skype FTW sleep.gif

. Better server performance
. Improved sign-in performance

Well, I hope they really improve this area. No more "message cannot be delivered" or "connection cannot be established at the moment" please dry.gif

. Automatic updates
This is again, great. It's a hassle to download a new build everytime it's released (but i'm wondering whether it works with WLM patched with Mess/A-patch)

Basically I'm anticipating this release. The improvements are quite practical (compare those online music store, Space integration craps)

They should be the same, and Port forwarding for WLM is often unnecessary

That's why we've a change log (right in the first post)

Duh, of course it has. It's now Beta version. That's why they need people like you to test it. If you're looking for a trouble-free release, I'd suggest you to wait for the final release.

And I just used it for half a day, no severe problem encountered yet.

Windows Live Messenger has just been moved to 8.1 Beta testing stage already. Microsoft has begun sending invitations to previous beta testers and I too have received an invitation to test out the new beta version.

From what i've read on their website, there is only minor changes made to the existing live messenger 8.0, so you chaps don't need to worry too much about the new v8.1 messenger.

Windows Live Messenger 8.1 Beta Download

This is some of the goodies that users can expect from the new beta messenger:

QUOTE
What's New?

Roaming Identity  - Your display name follows you any place you sign into. Now your display picture and personal message will follow you too. If you would prefer they stayed in place you can turn this off (Tools->Options->General -> Sign In -> "Use the same display picture....")

Contact Card - The contact card has gotten a updated look. Instead of a flip it does a slide to toggle between the Spaces and Contact information. Also no more squinting at an icon and trying to figure out what it means the actions on the card are now listed out plain and simple.

user posted image

Emoticons, Winks, Backgrounds, Display Pictures - The menus have gotten an updated look. They include a recently used list and easy access to featured content so you can get new emoticons, winks, background and display pictures to use. hint: typcially in the featured section the first 4 are free.

user posted image

SMS Phone Book - You now have a quick way to send SMS to a phone number or add phone numbers for your contacts. Just click the cell phone icon in them main window for a good time.

user posted image

New Contact Emotion - In 8.0 all our icons got an update but we forgot a very important one. The contact emoticon. Type (M) to send it.

user posted image

Status Menu includes Sign Out - We noticed people look in the status menu to sign out and so ta-da now you can sign out from the status menu.

user posted image

Report abuse - Here is something you will hopefully never need to use, but it is there just in case.

user posted image

Vista Presentation Mode - When you are in Presentation Mode on Vista Messenger will change your status to busy so you can avoid the embarrassing situation of everyone reading your IMs! Don't worry if you want to show Messenger in your presentation you can turn this off (Tools->Options-> Personal-> My Status -> Show me as "Busy"...).

*Anything else I should know? Yes. Vista users please follow the work around below to avoid the "DEP flash crash".

1. Uninstall Flash Player (Click Start->Control Panel->Uninstall a Program, then select Flash Player)

2. Close Windows Live Messenger and any other programs that use Flash

3. Open Adobe public Flash Player beta site

4. Click "Download Installer for Windows Active X" to install

There is a small problem with msn 8.X messenger.

Some people might experience adding contacts error.
When you delete a contact and re add him again, msn messenger won't add properly. It will keep saying the contact is not in your list or whatever. And you can't view him online.

You don't have to do anything. It is by default.

If you don't want it, you can disable.
