Hi All,

I think most of you guys are familiar with topics related with fungus. Did some google search and some said it is safe to keep fungus infected lens together with good lens in the drybox as fungus spores are everywhere and it is not contagious.

http://glenbarrington.blogspot.com/2014/09...ens-fungus.html

What I want to ask is... if I put a fungus infected lens into drybox, will it kills/stops the fungus growth and spreading on the lens?

Thanks icon_question.gif

It wont kill fungus. Just make them dormant. Fungus wont spread in controlled humidity and temperature. Of course dont try to put the infected ones together as they can still spread if got problem with the drybox.

1. Fungus spreads. That said, it's common for air to contain trace amount spore. So given a humid condition, fungus will grow. (Usually when you've a dusty lens in a dark humid place, which is very common in Malaysia)

2. Reduced humidity will halt growth of fungus.
But damage is done and once you remove it, it'll continue to grow.

Only strong UV or physical removal of fungus/fungicide will remove it.
Don't bother about putting ur lens under the sun, the UV rays are usually not strong enough to kill the spores. Not to mention the deep UV Rays that will kill it are filtered by the optics in the lens anyway.

^^^ like what @legendlee said...

1, drybox, low relative humid only stop spore from materialize to fungus

2. once materialize, it will not stop growing even in low humid.

only physical cleaning(with alcohol, ethanol (do not use methanol)) can remove it. UV(<400nm) might kill some fungus/algae to some extend only but not the spore, hence spore will still materialize when condition are meet again.

3. yes you can keep fungus infested lens in the same drybox with other lens, because mainly there is not 'active air/moving air' to transport the spore to other lens and the drybox provide low humid that doesnt meet the requirement for the spore to materialize.
