It depends on what type of bass guitar you're looking for. Entry level ones range RM400-1000 while mid-range ones are from RM1000-3000.
For starters, a SX or Squier bass would be good enough for your needs. The shouldn't cost anymore than RM600 I think. |

squier basses are not worth it anymore. The japanese ones were good. If you can find any japanese second hand squiers for under 1k, grab them fast. Otherwise, most squiers now are either indonesian or chinese made. Which suck. If you are into the rock culture, then go for ibanez. I personally don't like them, but it's the preferred choice for most rockers or metalheads out there. Don't bother with LTD basses because in my opinion, you'd be better off with an ibanez. I've tried them and they're way too overpriced (i think Guitar Collection is licensed distributor in msia). Rockbass by warwick is worth checking out. They have MEC PUs, which have made a good name for themselves in the mid range PUs section as far as i know. I can't comment on SXs as i haven't played one before, but apparently, they're are great value for price. So definitely worth checking out too. Like crazychris said, PM Bassraptor for infos. OLPs are like LTDs way overpriced. Epiphones, are not so popular in the bass world. Or maybe it's just me, i haven't seen many people using epis.
Mainly these are the common brands you can get easily in msia. Realistically, a budget of 2k is perfect for a start. If your budget is 1k, then you have to put up with crappy sound for awhile until you get a better bass and amp. Of course, these comments i made are subjective personal opinions. Do test the basses out before you buy them. Same goes for amps although i am not so familiar with what amps are available in msia. Hope this helps |

Yeah, Nels, decide on your budget first ... if you have only RM500-600 to spare, SX it is, around RM1k-1.5k, Ibanez .... |
