Anyone heard about this course? I'm sure that if u are interesting in financial & investment area, you should know about this .
anyone take the course or planning to take this course ? I'm going to take this course next year. so, hope can get some material from the guy/girl who already take CFA level 1. i dont mind to buy from you tongue.gif. But, I will appreciate if u r interesting in taking cfa, perhaps here are the place for us to discuss.

Thanks
*
I would suggest you get the latest material online. Every year the material changes, so it'll be better if you get the latest edition & not lost out on the new info. BTW, I'm planning to take in June 2009. But I'm not waiting for the scholarship from my professor. After the scholarship, I only pay like 1/4 of the total cost, which is ~US$300.

Great thread.. Im interested in taking CFA as well... Im currently still on the way of getting my degree, planning to do CFA after my degree.. Would it be better if we have some working experience first before taking CFA..?? Which is the best coll/institution in msia providing the best lecturer for CFA..??
*
Well, not necessarily you must have working experience although that would be a plus point. CFA is a self study program, which I don't know of any univ providing any lectures on that. Its even stated in CFA website that this is a self study program. Bare in mind, IF and ONLY IF you have the determination to pass all paper and commit about 20-30 hours a week studying for CFA, only you register for it. This is no joking business. My prof who is a PhD, MBA, BSc. told me to really think about it. He failed the level 1 exam 3 times before passing it. He told me to be very very serious if you want to commit to this program.

QUOTE(leekk8 @ Oct 30 2006, 11:13 AM)
Can anybody explain further about this CFA? I heard about CFP before, but not CFA. How much the fee to take the course? Any requirement to take this exam? How long the duration of courses?
*
CFA is just another professional certification/designation in the financial field. Its like ACCA for accountants. But CFA is worldwide recognized, thats the good part. The fee varies on the date you register for it. Google CFA & check out the website.

QUOTE(singularity @ Oct 31 2006, 09:11 PM)
hi

I used to do be very interested in getting a CFA later on, so did a mini research in it. Hopefully my memory din fail me.

CFA is just another professional cert like ACCA, CPA etc. but difference is that CFA is specific to financial personnels and ACCA to accountants. Thing is, you don't really necessarily hav a degree in finance or some other biz related degree to take it. Pre-req is to hav at least 3 years exp in the financial field. It's usually a passport 4 ppl 2 the higher management of a company and it's not that easy to pass with passing rate less than 30% per year (not sure of the exact figure but one thing is certain, passing rate is low).

The way to obtain CFA is a bit similar 2 ACCA in the sense that you've got 2 pass paper 1 before you go on to take paper 2. There're 3 papers you'll need 2 pass before you can get the cert. If you fail, then you retake next year. If you didn't fail any of these paper, then you'll complete everythin in 3 years time. There's still one step away from puttin the CFA designation in your name card. My fren's bro passed his CFA but he still can't use his designation because of something but I can't remember. Oh ya, and accounting forms the 'meat' of the CFA curriculum (that's wat a Singapore university lecturer told me bout CFA. He's from Nanyang Technological University)

Btw, CFA isn't the only way. You can take an MBA specialisin finance or take up a post grad in quantitative finance. Quantitative finance is a very computational subject, so ur math gotta be good la. From wat i research, seemed like quite a lot will go into hedge funds after that. But then again, it highly depends on yourself. For more info, you can google it or search in wikipedia.

Hope this helps. Cheers!
*
That's true & informative

QUOTE(singularity @ Oct 31 2006, 09:16 PM)
btw, if ur really plannin 2 go far in the finance field, I think what counts is your exp, not so much of your formal education (but having a professional cert does give u an edge). Plus, to really go high, it is really very demanding and you'll practically hav no life esp in the beginning...

They say that finance is still not that big in Asia as compared to in US. So if you really wanna go ultra high, the market is in the US. You can see the country which produces the most CFA is north america. otherwise settling as a financial analyst in a company would do oso. depends on you mostly.
*
QUOTE(v2_vehooi @ Nov 1 2006, 09:55 PM)
Is only 3 Level what I'm sure

TO singularity,
Your friend's brother can not use the CFA designation in his name card even though pass all 3 level is because of he still need at least 4 years ( last time is 3 years) related working experience.

Great to see all of you are so excited in this thread, btw, hope that for those already took CFA Level 1, 2, 3 can share your knowledge and experience with all our junior (include me lah tongue.gif). appreciate that....
*
Last time, upon completing all 3 papers, you must have 5 years working experience in investment field before you're qualified for the designation. Now I think its 4 years.

QUOTE(Kayne @ Nov 16 2006, 12:34 PM)
Well, in term of recognition. Unless you are getting MBA frm a reputable university such as harvard, oxford, and etc

else CFA would be a better recognise piece of cert. This is because the standard is being set & recognise globally.
*
That's right.

erm, ya... but CFA is much tuffer.. then how about a phD vs CFA..?? btw, do we have any phD for business..??
*
PhD only if you interested in research & wanna teach classes. CFA more for hedge fund managers & investment linked prospects.

QUOTE(DarXnight @ Nov 17 2006, 09:01 PM)
I am taking this in my Uni, and I am a full-time student.
*
CFA is a self study program. Not sure if any uni offering classes for it. Not sure if M'sia do. Please share.

This is true as far as I know, as my sister needed to get office experience too even after getting her degree from LSE several years back.

But I was wondering, according to the website you can take the exam of course at the final year of your bachelor's degree, and even if you pass the exam you would still need to fulfil the industry experience requirements to obtain the title CFA, am I right?
*
Yes you can. But upon receiving your bachelor, you gotta show it to the CFA board. You can complete your CFA before graduation. But sometime infuture you MUST have a bachelors.

QUOTE(eternalflame @ Nov 28 2006, 06:10 PM)
Suria College is a good option for those who are looking to enroll into the CFA course. The lecturers are really hardworking and dedicated who are very committed. They are also qualified themselves, holding CFA qualification with years of experience.

The best part is they give more hours of lessons and practice of Q&As than any other college that runs CFA classes. the large number of Q&As give you a thorough understanding of all the subject areas in the syllabus and the ability to answer the questions correctly in the 3 hours exam.

Besides that, their approach is really good, they go through a large number of Q&As immediately after completing the lecture on each subject area. It allows the students to understand the subject thoroughly and very well. They also provides simplified study materials that are focused on the learning outcomes that the CFA institute requires students to achieve in the examination.

Plus, the fees they charge for CFA is the MOST affordable that you couldn't find anywhere else. For their CFA Level 1 classes, they are only charging RM3502. This is including study materials, also include those Q&As. No extra cost is charged to their students. They has a complete set of all the books that are required reading for the CFA examination program.

Another good thing is they control the size of the class very much in order for the lecturers to pay enough attention to each student. The lecturers are superbly patient. The maximum number of students in a class is 20. Compare the price you pay and the attention you get. It's really worth it.

Their schedule is absolutely flexible. They have the classes run for part-time. Students can choose the weekday evening classes or weekend classes. What's more, the principal of the college even involves in teaching for he's very experienced, a highly sought after lecturer. No one can be more motivated and committed to the success of the college's programmes than the owner.

Actually, Suria College has been in operation for more than 18 years as a licensed higher education institute. In addition to the CFA classes, they also conduct classes for ACCA, CAT, Certificate in English Proficiency.

So yeah, check out the college and the courses offered. It is located in Plaza Pantai, nearby Menara TM and Mid Valley Megamall. You can get to the college by LRT. It's just located in front of it. Very convenient for anyone to get there without having to worry about transportation problems. smile.gif

i think he meant u cant obtain the tittle of 'CFA' after ur name even thou u have pass the exam without the experience, like any other professional courses..
u may study n take the exam, but qualified member of CFA must have some work experience..
*
After passing all exam, must have 4 years of working experience in investment field. Working as banker or teller doesn't really count.

any examption from acca to cfa ?
*
I don't think there's any exemption. But you do get an advantage since you're ACCA student & deal with lots of accounting. I heard the killer part in L1 is the accounting part, that is the hardest part from what I heard.

QUOTE(ZONX @ Jun 6 2007, 11:03 PM)
Currently i'm working in Perak and plan to take CFA

i can only see CFA is available in Kasturi in KL from google

So is there any other ways to take CFA? part time~nop since i'm working in perak..

is self-study possible? since the course is hardcore one and lack of group discussion~
*
Well, CFA IS a self study program. But looking at this thread, there seems to be some institute offering classes for it.

QUOTE(Lcsx @ Jun 7 2007, 09:49 AM)
There are actually around 3 main places to study CFA in KL, another is called MIM at Jalan Ampang.

I am aware that there is at least 1 place to study in Penang also. Down south, Singapore there is plenty. Uh... Perak... really no idea.

Your only option there would seem to be self study. Materials can be purchased through CFA institute itself or other 3rd parties.
*
3rd parties would be Schweser from what I know.

QUOTE(Kayne @ Jun 25 2007, 05:58 PM)
Fyi you have to be at least final year( final semester of your dergee) to be qualified to take CFA. You can find this information from their web site

The prereq for CFA is at least to be a dergee holder but they are allowing final year student to start taking it:)

cheers
*
Yes you're right. Final year degree student are allowed to take. As long as you show your proof of your degree upon graduating.

QUOTE(keelim @ May 31 2008, 04:20 PM)
To be recognized you need 4 yrs of working experience? Can someone clarify on this?

What working experience do we need? To be recognized as a CFA ( after passing all the exam), we need to have 4 years of relevant working experience such as in Banks, Securities and financial advisory fields only?

What about corporations and firms that have corporate finance department? Will the CFA Board acknowledge those working experience?

Anyone mind sharing some input?
*
AFAIK, you will have to work in investment related firm or dealing with securities. 4 year working experience before you can have the CFA title in your name card. thumbup.gif thumbup.gif

after passing cfa, must have few years experience in investment then only can use the title?

what if already work few years in investment, then only get cfa...? can straight way use the title?
*
Yes. You must have at least 4 years of working experience in investment field before you can have the CFA title in your name.

If you're already working in the investment field or have prior experience, that counts toward the 4 years. Just that you need a recommendation letter from your company saying that you have working experience in that field and that you're qualified for that designation.

ZONX,

Yeah man. Since I'm not attached, might as well go travel & see the world. When start working & studying, there is no freaking way I can take a month off and tell my boss "lou sai, I'm goin for Euro backpacking, be back in a month". Haha. Most likely I'll do some traveling before getting my feet into the working world.

I know about the fees schedule. A lil' more than US$1,000 for the 1st time you reg cos' they provide you with all the study material, reg fee, exam and whatsoever. BTW, where is the testing center you reg for? Did they inform you that the exam is gonna be in paper format? That is AFAIK.

I reg for KL testing center since that's the only one in malaysia. can't pick unless you plan to take it oversea wink.gif
*
My prof told me the exam gonna be in paper format. Just wanna make sure. Dunno if they have it in computer format.

Where is the testing center in KL? Most prob I'll choose for the testing center in KL although I reg in USA.
