Hi all!

I'm currently pursuing my degree ( finance ) in first year, any helpful course or program can be taken at this stage? Is there any part time job for a student (such as unit trust agent) that helps to gain experience and useful when he's in working place and doing a job which related to finance.

Any replies will be highly appreciated! Thanks. =)

Past your degree 1st, or at least make it through your last year in your degree then only think about getting course or program.

...aiming IB as my future career...But, CFA Level 1 seems to be essential for local private uni fresh grad to break into the industry...

A fantasy from another IB wannabie. For your information, me was a fresh graduate with 2nd lower grade degree and did not have the CFA Level I but got my first job in a top tier local IB.

Maybe you graduated from a top ranked overseas uni? I mean, the completion is there nowadays. Supply is so much more than demand now. Maybe CFA is only point that makes me stands out. The top ranked uni graduates are everywhere.
*
I have told you before I am ain't from top ranked overseas uni.

So I follow your logic that you think CFA = top ranked uni, since you are not from top ranked uni which indicates you may not be able to pass CFA hmm.gif ?

If anyone wants to buy the approved financial calculators, you can find them at Times bookstore @ Pavilion. Two models are sold at the bookstore, which are:
1) Texas Instruments BAII Plus
2) HP 12c Financial Calculator (and there's a 30th Anniversary edition model as well)
*
What are the price for these 2 calculators?

QUOTE(Emery @ Apr 1 2013, 04:33 PM)
Hey guys, I'm actually contemplating in taking CFA. Would like to clarify this as I've done some research and it says that in order to get the CFA title you'll have to have 4 years of working experience.

Would like to ask is it similar to CPA as in where in terms of CPA, have 3 years work exp in auditing/accounting field or just in general 4 years in any line of work? Since CFA is 4 years, I'm assuming we must have 4 years of work exp in the financial field in order to achieve the CFA title?

This is because I'm actually getting contradicting information where some people have told me that it could be in any line of work, and some say it must be in the financial line.

Thanks in advance, cheers! smile.gif

Why not go check out the CFA Institute's website instead of listening to hearsay? If you continue to follow hearsay, I doubt you are capable to take on the CFA Program.

Here is the reference

"Enroll & Register
1. Meet the entrance requirements:
•Have a bachelor's (or equivalent) degree ◦ or be in the final year of your bachelor's degree program at the time of registration*
◦or have four years of professional work experience (does not have to be investment related)
◦or have a combination of professional work and college experience that totals at least four years. Part-time positions do not qualify, and the four-year total must be accrued prior to enrollment. "
http://www.cfainstitute.org/programs/cfapr...ages/index.aspx

"Become a CFA Charterholder
To earn a CFA charter, you must:
•Have four years of qualified investment work experience,
•Become a member of CFA Institute, "
http://www.cfainstitute.org/programs/cfapr...ages/index.aspx

"Work Experience Guidelines
http://www.cfainstitute.org/about/membersh...ence.aspx"

Those who told you "it could be in any line of work" is only applicable when you are registering to be the candidate of the CFA Program, not to be the CFA Charter. And to become a CFA charter, having 4 years of working experience in financial line is not sufficient, you need to further prove that your 4-year financial experience is related to investment decision making.

The 4yrs experience is very strict, pls be careful when considering the jobs you want to apply. my last submission was failed despite being research analyst in stock broking firm. CFA institute wants something very concrete experience and you must be in the process of investment decision.
*
I just got the CFA Charter. My experience is 2 years in corporate finance, 1 year in corporate advisory, 8 months in financial modelling, 6 months in equty research and 3 years in IT business consultant. With that more than 50% of my work experience qualified in "Directly involved in the investment decision-making process" and "Engaged in responsibilities and/or producing a work product that informs or adds value to that process".

So for your case, I think you still can try to appeal to prove that out of your 4-year experience which was 50% directly involved in the investment decision-making (i.e. 2 years).

kinda sucks that i couldnt find any job in stockbroking/asset management industry with cfa lvl1 (not even an interview for associate position and local boutique as well)

current job is too bored, and i m looking forward for july to register lv2...      thats my aim for now..  laugh.gif
*
-> "couldnt find any job in stockbroking/asset management industry with cfa lvl1", what so great with Level 1 that giving an illusion you will get a job in stockbroking/asset management? Any 'job' some more? Toilet cleaner? In my opinion, you don't know what you want, that is the problem why you can't get a 'job' in stockbroking/asset management.

Textbook is kinda hard to understand to be honest. That was da reason why I'm actually searching for other alternatives. And 1 textbook is like more than 300 pages. 6 books total up to more than 1800 pages. Dats alot of reading. Lo
*
So far I found the reading of the 6 CFA Curriculum books was the most effective ways to study the CFA program. Other non-CFA institute supplementary books may summary the study outline of the program, however the CFA Curriculum books contain the most relevant information, including the type questions going to tested in the Exam.

Yo guys, have any of you received a violation in CFA for writing past exam time? As in still circling after exam time ended?
*
Writing after being instructed to stop is a vviolation, so the covered candidate would likely have his/her exam result void.

This is a good website in helping you guys to prepare for the CFA exams.
https://www.passedtense.com/Index

It offers eManual and/or practice exams for an amount of fee. So far, it only offers manual and practice exams for Level I, but more products will be coming in the future! I never use it for CFA exam (not a CFA taker), but I used coachingactuaries.com (also under SALT solution) for my actuarial exams, and it was really helpful. Both websites use the same system. There's also online support/forum in case you need extra help or explanation on the practice exams.

Best of luck to the test takers!
*
How much the fees that we need to pay for this the usage of the practice questions from this website?

Have you checked out the website?
ADAPT aka practice exams and eManual are both USD99 each.
If you get both, it'll be USD150. These are promotional prices, and only for CFA level I. Not sure if the pricing will be different for higher level.

If you do well in the practice exam, your 'earned level' will increase based on your performance. They assume if you get Earned Level of 7 out of 10, you're ready to take the exam.

I think it's worth it than having to repeat the exam due to lack of preparation and exposure.
*
I see, US$150 quite expensive shakehead.gif

Hi all...

I've just registered for Dec 2014 Level 1 CFA. I did not buy the printed version. will rely mostly on Schweser Notes and plan to do plenty of MCQ practices. This is based on advice from my friend who had recently passed her level 1.

Feel free to comment on this study plan. TQ!
*
If you are a degree-graduate in finance, maybe you don't even need to study schweser notes or doing any MCQ practices, just right away go for level I exam thumbup.gif .

Wait, you have to read a bit on ethics, forget this is taught in the degree program tongue.gif . If you think you are very ethical person, you can even skip this ethics, haha laugh.gif .

you can also ask nicely for a pdf copy from existing students.

All you need is to meet up at KLCC< and belanja high keras coffee

I got all books for 3 levels, but no one wanted to buy me nice meals for these books, because they are all outdated due to CFA Programme's syllabus changed frequently.
