The RM 10+ plate of rice with fried chicken and egg can be cheaper at around RM 6.50 to RM 7.00 at Subaidah.
Perhaps Kayu kuah is 5 stars. |

The reason why restaurants like Kayu and Pelita can still stand despite the crazy prices are the apathical customers.
Without demand, there can be no supply. These restaurants continue to make business this way because people keep buying from them, not exactly for the food, but for the social caste game; The wealthier segment of the population do this, subconsciously or otherwise, as a declaration to others that "I CAN AFFORD TO PAY THIS MUCH FOR FOOD AND YOU LOSERS CAN'T! MUAHAHAHAHAHA!" Same explanation can be applied for why people continue to buy overpriced shit from Apple and drink at Starbucks. Sure, it's your fucking money, so you can spend it however the fuck you want. Then again, your apathy will affect everyone else. Since businesses are now used to charging as much as they can, they will continue to do so without any sense of social responsibility. Inflation will rise and people stuck at middle class and lower will have to pay much, much more than they needed to just a few years ago. The trend with mamak restaurants in particular is especially telling; people used to go to these restaurants for authentic meal at prices that are only slightly higher than the makcik selling nasi lemak at the roadside stall, but Kayu and Pelita showed mamak restaurant owners all across Malaysia that they can set us their business model as 'premium oriented' and gullible people will buy into it. I mean, it was damn near unthinkable in a small town in Kedah just 10 years ago that a nasi campur serving of rice, fried chicken and gravy mix can be sold for RM5; you'll sooner close your shop before even surviving for one year. Nowadays, you'll have to look hard to find one that charges even just RM1 less than that as mamak restaurant owners everywhere are taking advantage of the gullible nature of Malaysians, not just in big cities. beware of those plate certain mamak restaurant use
it might look as similar as banana leaf ![]() but it doesn't give you any banana leaf smell and in long terms might give you a cancer because of the artificial coloring to make those plate more greener |

Nowadays, you'll have to look hard to find one that charges even just RM1 less than that as mamak restaurant owners everywhere are taking advantage of the gullible nature of Malaysians, not just in big cities. much better than those overhyped penang nasi kandar. and they are priced much more reasonable. This one they uses the real grains from the Taj Mahal's garden. anyway, the first kayu restaurant is the SS2 one. then they opened 2nd one in taipan usj, much later only the penang one came up. still, kayu's does not taste like the original penang nasi kandar. they are typical mamak, the original owner and cook of the first kayu was an indian, not even a muslim. now dont know if he is still with kayu or not. |

QUOTE(jamilselamat @ May 26 2015, 08:00 PM) The reason why restaurants like Kayu and Pelita can still stand despite the crazy prices are the apathical customers. The only reason people go to mamak because they are everywhere, evry corner there are mamak, got one time during lunch looking for kedai melayu with waifu until she mengamuk because getting so hungry looking for a proper melayu mix rice Without demand, there can be no supply. Never tried the original in Penang, but I ate quite often at Kayu way back when it was still just a small in Chow Yang coffee shop in SS2. It was damn awesome back than. I remember we used to buy the kuah kari ikan (for which they would charge RM10 itself) and brought it back to cook our own fish in it. Syiok!
Of course, we all know what happened to Chow Yang (owner bankrupted from gambling debts) while that little stall flourished into owning both the front and back shops now. Quality, taste, and portion went down the drain though. Best nasi kandar in KL/PJ that I've had recently with curry and fried chicken would be at the nasi kandar stall just outside the Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall in KL (don't ask me why its Selangor in KL |
