Kuwait To Purchase 28 Typhoons
By Andrew Chuter 11:30 a.m. EDT September 11, 2015

ROME — Kuwait has agreed to purchase 28 Typhoon combat jets in a multibillion euro deal with the Italian government, industry sources in the region said Friday.

The deal is still in negotiation but Kuwait has agreed to buy 22 single seat and six twin-seat Typhoons in a government-to-government agreement.

Italian firm Finmeccanica's Alenia Aermacchi division has been leading the Eurofighter effort to sell the Typhoon to the Kuwaitis.

Industry sources said the deal could see the Kuwaitis be the first export customer for the active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar being developed for the jet by Italy's Selex ES.

One industry executive said the agreement is welcome, not least because after a flurry of Middle Eastern successes this year for French rival Dassault with the Rafale, the Kuwaiti decision "reinvigorates other opportunities in the gulf region for Typhoon."

France secured deals for the Rafale in Qatar and Egypt earlier this year and deliveries to Cairo are underway.

Saudi Arabia and Oman are already Typhoon customers in the region. The Saudis have been talking about a further buy of the jets and Bahrain is also another potential customer.

News that the two governments have been in detailed discussions over the sale has been circulating since midyear. The deal follows reports in May that the Kuwaitis were in discussions with the US to purchase up to 40 Boeing F/A-18 fighters.

The position on those negotiations is unknown, although there has been some speculation in the past that the Kuwaitis could go for a split buy.

A US source acknowledged there is always a chance for a split buy from Kuwait, and said talks on a Super Hornet sale to Kuwait are still moving forward.

While declining to name Kuwait specifically, a Boeing spokeswoman said the company and the US government are still in conversation with potential Middle Eastern customers

China developing military stealth helicopter - E & T Magazine

user posted image

China is reportedly developing a new helicopter that will provide its military with stealth capabilities, a Chinese newspaper has reported.

The new aircraft, being developed by the country's leading aerospace manufacturer Aviation Industry Corp of China, should be ready for delivery to the People's Liberation Army around 2020.

Citing Lin Zuoming, the company chairman of Aviation Industry Corp of China, told China Daily on Friday that the stealth capabilities of the helicopter will ‘reshape the combat patterns’ of the country's 2.3 million-strong military forces.

"It is a trend that the ground force will become increasingly dependent on helicopters because they have better strike capability and mobility than armoured vehicles and transport supplies to frontier troops," Lin said.

Without providing any further details, Wu Ximing , the chief helicopter designer of Aviation Industry Corp of China, said the aircraft would have ‘supreme manoeuvrability in complicated environments, outstanding survivability and joint operation ability’.

The development is another step in the strategy of China’s President Xi Jinping to toughen and modernise the country's army as China pursues its interests in the South China and East China seas.

In the recent years, the country’s industry has been focusing on development of multiple high-tech weapons including stealth jets, aircraft carriers and emerging technology aimed at shooting down satellites.

Russia India T-90MS Tank Deal Negotiations For Moscow To Supply Military Battle Vehicle Have Begun

user posted image

The Russian military began discussions with India Friday over a contract to supply the South Asia country with the T-90MS battle tank, according to a report from Russian news site Sputnik. Supplying the tank, which costs around $4.5 million per unit, would be the latest defense contract signed between the two countries over the last year.

"Negotiations are underway on the possibility of signing a new contract with new conditions, to supply India with T-90MS," said a representative of Uralvagonzavod, the manufacturer of the tank. However, the number of tanks that Russia would supply to India and their value have yet to be negotiated.

India currently has a license with Russia to reproduce a similar tank known as the T-90S. Both tanks use the same type of ammunition, but the T-90MS includes additional countermeasures to significantly reduce the chances of being hit by enemy anti-tank semi-automatic guided weapons.

The T-90MS, also referred as Tagil, was first unveiled in 2011. It was proposed specifically for the Russian army and possible export markets, including India. Russia has completed the full cycle of testing on the T-90MS, a spokesperson for the defense company manufacturing the tank told Sputnik Wednesday.

Last week, the Indian Defense Acquisition Council said it would add 48 Russian-built Mi-17-V5 helicopters to its military's fleet, Russia's official news agency Tass reported. That deal adds to the $6 billion contract that India signed earlier this year to buy BrahMos cruise missiles from Russia.

Despite sanctions resulting from Russia's involvement in the east Ukraine war, Russian defense sales topped $15 billion dollars in 2014, and the country's long term defense portfolio stands at about $48 billion, said Alexander Formin, director of the Federal Service for Military-Technological Cooperation, according to the Russian government owned Rossiyskaya Gazeta.

"We planned to deliver $15.59 billion worth of products but the actual cost of deliveries was $15.3 billion. Foreign currency revenue exceeded $14 billion," said Formin.

D-day (31/8/2015) - Terrible terrible haze with grey skies

But just when you thought, they would run out of surprises by now. There came an 11 ship Su-30MKM formation to the roar of the crowd.

Japan’s Armed Forces: The Ultimate Military or an Out-of-Date Relic?

user posted image

QUOTE
At first glance, Japanese military forces look like that of any other country of the same size. It spent roughly the same last year on its armed forces as Germany, for example. Its ground troops, seamen and pilots wear uniforms and operate much of the same machinery as its patron, the United States, which has sold Japan almost $5 billion in military equipment in the last decade, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute. It possesses modern rifles, missiles, jets, seafaring vessels that bear aircraft, and all of the other framework that the common observer would associate with an offensive force.

The difference lies in those small details that align with Article IX of its post-war constitution, enshrining the Japanese people's aspiration to "forever renounce war as a sovereign right of the nation and the threat or use of force as means of settling international disputes."

Those missiles, for example, can shoot at other aircraft and other ships, but not ground targets, for that latter requirement would only be necessary for an offensive military. Its military does not have what other world forces call "ground-attack doctrine," or the rules, training and techniques to root out and destroy an opposing army. It has vessels that look like aircraft carriers, but most of its aircraft can't actually land or take off directly from them.

Analysts Skeptical Over Pakistan-Russia Su-35 Negotiations

ISLAMABAD — Analysts are generally skeptical at present of reports Pakistan and Russia are engaged in negotiations for the delivery of a number of Su-35 Flanker E fighter aircraft, though there is a potential requirement for such a heavy fighter.

The reports, first published in Russian media, cited Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov as saying both sides were negotiating for the delivery of an unspecified number of Su-35 jets alongside the Mi-35M "Hind E" helicopter gunships that have recently been agreed upon.

However, no word on any such negotiations was received from the Ministry of Defence Production in Pakistan when asked for comment on the issue. The agency also handles acquisition.

Experts are generally skeptical of any Su-35 being acquired by Pakistan.

Author, analyst and former Australian defense attache to Islamabad, Brian Cloughley, said he "would be most surprised if there were to be any arrangement for provision of Su-35s."

"The Indians would be extremely upset, to the point of a major diplomatic rift," Cloughley said.
