All animals with teeth are potential biters. Is just that gerbils bite less. I have had so so so many gerbils... not one has bitten me yet. Sometimes they bite if they fight and feel fierce, sometimes just nibble to taste, sometimes they bite to bully or bite because startled or scared.

Do not show fear. Just handle and play with them as normal. Do not make painful noises or gestures. If you put it down straight after it bite, it will remember that if it bites you, then you will not touch it, so they bite more so you do not disturb them loh... plain and simple... Anyway, a dog's bite is worst than a gerbil of hamster.
