Hi all,

I'm planning to set up a small budget jamming room at home. I already have a budget drumset (Pearl Forum) bought used.

Now, I need 2 budget amps for bass and guitar. Any chance I can settle both with less than RM1,000? Also, is it true that the bass amp needs to be 2x the power of the guitar amp?

I'm looking at possibly a 40w bass amp and 20w guitar amp.

too small wattage, probably blow the amps when they turn it up to hear themselves over the drummer.
for guitar amp, min 50w for solid state.
so rm1000 for both, not possible.

Thanks!

Planning for casual practice sessions only. Not jamming per se.

actually it's possible if you wanna get smaller amps, if and only if, you use drum mutes. of course that is a big turn off for drummers.

So yeah I think you need 50w for guitar amp, 70w for bass. both must have at least 12" speakers.

This is what I've used for my home jamming room:

Marshall DSL-1C, JCM-1C
Hartke A35
Yamaha Manu Katche Signature Jr Drum Set
Meinl Generation X Thomas Lang Cymbal Pack w/ Sabian 13" XS20 Hi-hats
Yamaha STAGEPAS 500

My jamming (store)room has carpets, with shelves, furniture and the room's acoustics are decent enough - tip: don't waste time with egg cartons which serves no purpose.
I've never needed drum mutes and with the jungle kit I can hit/play "hard/loud" and not have to restrict my playing intensity - tip: use smaller drums and smaller cymbals.
The 1W amps are sufficiently loud enough to be heard over the jungle kit; never needed speaker cabs or to mic them up through the PA - tip: amp placement is important.
The 35W bass amp feels underpowered at times (when there are 2 guitars) so I sometimes use the Direct Out into the STAGEPAS - though a 70W or greater wattage bass amp should easily solve this.

When/if I have time, I'll post some photos. To answer your questions, you can settle both for RM1K - just buy used gear. Bass amp needs to be 2x or 3x louder than the guitar amp - ideally >70W w/ 10" speaker. Have fun! icon_rolleyes.gif

Thanks buddy! Helps a lot. Now I will hunt for 70w and 50w bass and guitar amps, and also find ways to treat the room acoustically. Right now I think it is not good.

You're always welcome. My first step was rearranging everything in the room, adding furniture, shelves, stuff etc. and making sure it sounded okay.

Also, you could try converting your full size drumset into a jungle kit - the floor tom can be converted into a kick drum; this would a project in itself: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.1...=1&l=a8036ee768

Anyway, once the drums are smaller, everything else becomes easier. I used a large 2.4m x 1.2m wooden pallet as a riser for my jungle kit. Below the pallet/riser (where it contacts the floor), I used large rubber floor mats. And on the pallet/riser, I use a carpet which the drums are on.

As for my guitar amps (on the 1W setting), I've never had to turn up past 12 o'clock - it becomes way too loud otherwise. Even my old solid state 15W Fender Frontman amp is sufficiently loud enough, though it hisses, crackles and buzzes with gain turned up, so I don't use it (this is another story altogether).

You turn down the volume to manageable levels.

Assuming that you've sealed off the room, so the sound doesn't "leak". By sealing off gaps under and around the door(s), and doing the same for the windows, you're basically tackling the "sound isolation" issue. Read: https://www.soundonsound.com/sos/mar98/arti...ndproofing.html

Frankly, the only real problem would be bass frequencies which travel along concrete beams/pillars. Turning down the volume usually fixes everything. smile.gif

Maybe you can try to switch to a silent studio setup. Sell the drum and get an electronic drum, Or convert your Pearl Drum into one. Everyone listen through their earphones. And you don't have to worry about neighbors or parents banging at your door with a baseball bat.

Cheers............ icon_rolleyes.gif

at rm800 budget its almost impossible to get a decent jamming studio amp.
u need to up ur budget by another 50% then only start getting into 'potentials'.

anyway on mudah also, u can try this.
http://www.mudah.my/FENDER+Champion+40+40W...mp-35460524.htm

but fender amps arent really known for handling heavy distortion well.
better u just walk into bentley and test them first.

welll why i mentioned the fender is cos of the 12" speaker which technically should help it withstand abit more punishment.
while that vox only has a 10" speaker.
but both if in a bedroom setting should work anyway.

then again, if in a bedroom...another one u can look at is the vox lil night train set.
ck got sale on it now - http://www.ckmusic.com.my/products/Vox-Lil...Set-in-Gold/885

its only 2w but it is a tube and quite loud for bedroom.
only slack thing is that one is gold plated instead of regular chrome, guess thats why on sale cos no one buys gold stuff tongue.gif

Used to have home jamming studio before. I can play music with my friends without any complain. I can play with my friend without waking up my toddler in different room.

All equipment connect to 8 channel mixer. Guitar's effect pedals and bass go straight into the mixer. I'm using electronic drum, so the output goes straight to the mixer as well. Then I connect the mixer output using Behringer HA400 headphone amplifier so that everybody can listen using headphone. Very quiet from the outside but the sound is superb! The guitar, bass and drum is mixed with balance without using AMP at all.

If you are using acoustic drum.. get drum mute and install drum trigger if you want to try this setup.

By the way, I used a cheap behringer 8 channel usb mixer. Can record also. smile.gif
