perhaps you will want to check out your university subject Well Testing and Formation Evaluation (MWD/LWD).

you had an interview but you have no idea what are the detail job scopes...and you applied for it?

generally, yes i know the job scope of this position but specifically, i have no idea about what this position do mostly in oil and gas company. i just want to know more detail so that i know what to expect since there will be another interview. plus, i googled regarding this position but the results are not so encouraging. so, based on your answer can i say this position will be more or less like reservoir engineer? icon_question.gif

QUOTE(heliosi @ Jun 17 2015, 01:29 AM)
well, it could be...worse? at least it's not data management.

I don't think the position will be directly related to PE. Although petroleum engineering does involve looking at large datasets for several reasons, such as to find trends, justify technical/economic decisions and obtain mathematical approximations, I think that those tasks would be handled by the petroleum engineer themselves rather than being delegated to a "data analyst".

That being said, you would probably still be analyzing data typical of the industry, e.g. if you are handling production data then expect to see data units of MMscf, Mbbl, etc. Worth noting that your familiarity with the industry could also explain why the company would take you in but not for a petroleum engineering position.

So your job scope might lie somewhere in between data analysis done by petroleum engineer's and the mindless keyboard-punching tasks done by technical assistants. Depends on your company too. Large O&G companies especially operators have large PE departments comprising of individuals with very specific roles, in that case your "data analyst" position could indeed be a real data analyst position (and I do hope that is the case).

Disclaimer: the answer above is based on speculation and anecdotal experience; I have not seen a job description for a data analyst in an oil & gas company.
*
thanks for your explanation. i think the company chose me maybe because of my experience during my practical which i handled production data. and yes even i did a research on the internet, there are no job description for a data analyst in oil and gas company. that's why i hope there is someone here that maybe knows about this position or works as data analyst itself could enlighten me on this.

thanks again for the answer. it helped me to know more about this position. if you have further information please let me know so that i would not get 'culture shock'. laugh.gif

QUOTE(ninpo_buu @ Jul 4 2015, 12:59 AM)
I applied for graduate field engineer and I've got in the same situation as you. Baker Hughes freezes all recruitment for grads throughout the world. I've read in Nigerian forum that they are also facing this situation. My advice, don't put much hope in it. When the time comes, they will start rehire again but who knows when.

ps: I applied on October 2014. Sad but life must goes on...smile.gif

Yup still evaluation in progress. But as I mentioned before, there's a slim chance they start rehiring again anywhere within this year. Maybe like our oldtimer said the industry will start kickin in year 2017. But that time we have enormous competitors graduating till that year. Anyway did you get this email?

Dear xxxx

Hi all. I am working with mnc o&g company right now. My job is more to support the team and not as engineer. Worked for two years already. I plan to apply for another job to be an engineer as my background is engineering. With the current crisis, is it a wise decision for me to switch my job? Because even the oil price is depleted I saw there are many companies still hiring. Need some advice from all of you.

Hi all sifus. Need opinions from all of you. Right now I'm working with MNC oil n gas company but not as engineer. It is just office job and no travel required. Have been working for one and half years and I can say it is secured even the oil price is low since I never heard any one from this company got lay off.

Recently I got offer from SLB for field engineer. So the question is should I take this offer or just stick with my current job because I know most of the engineer got lay off nowadays. But in terms of payment, SLB pays a lot compare to my current salary.

Fyi, my background is engineering and I would really love a job which needs me to travel and not only do the office job but with the current issue and all the lay off make me confuse whether to stay or to accept the offer. Hope everyone can give honest opinions for me. icon_question.gif icon_question.gif

If I were you I will take SLB job. I will take the risk since I don't have much commitment. If field engineer offshore be ready to sell your life to the company for a high pay.

You will be offshore most of your time like a month with only few days onshore break. If there are important things to do onshore be ready to be denied leaves since you are the most junior.

Offshore life is not fun at all especially if you need to stay on a boat. May be treated as secondary worker at clients platform since you are a contractor.

High risk job offshore and if you make a mistake can be banned from going offshore.

I would say please do more research on the business product that you will be working...see if the line has a good demand or business in this region....

My friend last time join one of the service company under gravel pack, then no contract transfer to casing and then to liner and then MWD and got retrenched...

My 2 cents...

Thanks for your opinion bro. But with the rumours that SLB laying off more workers, I guess all the business products in SLB will be affected. doh.gif doh.gif

If no commitments in life it is worth a try if I were you. 10000 is that worldwide or only in Malaysia?
*
10 000 globally. Yes, I have no commitments but I'm afraid if I'm unlucky enough to be laid off then it is harder for me to find a secured job again. Because right now I'm not sure whether the statistic is right or not since SLB never made a statement about the exact numbers of worker to be slashed. Can someone who is currently working with SLB in this forum help me out on this? Are there a lot of workers that base in Malaysia to be laid off? If it is PNC please DM me.
