The hose suck air from your engine interior, in order to
1) reuse blow-by gases (for the environment)
2) circulate air inside to prevent moisture in the engine (for you)

Some oil residue is normal. If you're concerned just install a oil catch tank. But it was absolutely unnecessary.
An air breather, is useless, too.
