QUOTE(aymni @ May 7 2015, 12:58 PM) In Malaysia a lot of the Malays have Javanese blood in them. They may not necessarily be from Java, but their ancestors were. Different to Indonesia, we just call everyone Malays instead of differentiating them based on where they're from, ie Jawa, Acheh, Minang etc. So those ethnic Javanese all assimilate into ethnic Malay?

If they already assimilate into Malay, does that mean even if a person consider himself or herself as Malay, he or she wouldn't know if there is Javanese blood in them?

QUOTE(aymni @ May 7 2015, 01:21 PM) may or may not know. parents will know generally, but younger generation may not. When Malay people in Malaysia claim themselves as Malay, do they mean Malay as in ethnic or race? QUOTE Malay race, a racial category used in the late 19th and early 20th century to describe Austronesian peoples Ethnic Malays, the ethnic group located primarily in the Malay peninsula, and parts of Sumatra and Borneo http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MalayYes, there is difference between ethnic Malay and Malay race.

QUOTE(aymni @ May 7 2015, 01:40 PM) Hmm.. make sense. If it's both it mean ethnically, Malaysian Javanese has throw away their ethnic Javanese identity but instead, choose to assimilate into ethnic Malay identity. Perhaps in the future, younger generation of Malay will never know if one of their ancestor is ethnic Javanese.

QUOTE(aymni @ May 7 2015, 02:07 PM) Most likely. Modenrnisation, Western culture and all. Not just Malays or Javanese, all races as well, I think. Do you have any idea how many percentage of Malaysia population consists of ethnic Malays, Boyanese, Achinese, Javanese, Bugis, Balinese before they all assimilate into ethnic Malay? Do we have census for that?

If a Javanese with Indonesia nationality want to change his nationality to Malaysian, does he need to change his ethnicity from Javanese to Malay too?

QUOTE(aymni @ May 7 2015, 06:53 PM) no clue. Malaysia considers all this as Malays. I believe Malaysian constitution says you're a Malay if you're a Muslim and you practice Malay ways of living. So we don't know how many percentage or how common it is Malay people today has Javanese ancestry? This post has been edited by Varezart: May 7 2015, 07:04 PM

QUOTE(aymni @ May 7 2015, 07:31 PM) At least I don't know. Someone in Jabatan Pendaftaran Negara might. Why do you ask? Because I was just wondering with ethnic Javanese in Malaysia getting assimilated into Malay ethnicity, how did the wikipedia manage to get the population of ethnic Javanese in Malaysia which is 4.3 million figure? IF Javanese got assimilated as Malay ethnicity, shouldn't their ethnicity in Jabatan Pendaftaran Negara also change to Malay ethnicity? How did wikipedia get their information?
