Hi, would just like to give some advice to any aspiring musicians here. If you are interested in pursuing music, DO NOT got to ICOM. Yes, their website is nice and fancy, but they are not a good college to study anything for that matter and I shall list some valid reasons as to why I think so:
1. They are a private money-making institution.
From my experience here, this college is only interested in making money. For many years, students have complained of broken and faulty equipment, but the people 'upstairs' have refused to meet with students to discuss this. For the record, there have been several meetings where there were replacements for these broken items (mic stands, mics, guitar amps, pianos, etc) where it was agreed upon that the aforementioned items would be replaced. Nothing has been changed after 2 years.
Also to back this point up, the college has removed the compulsory term to purchase a MacBook for RM12,000, and instead replaced that option with a compulsory fee of RM12,000 that goes towards their Multimedia Lab. Their multimedia lab consists of approximately 15 iMac Desktops that do not add up to this ridiculous 'extra fee' that they charge. The college is hiding figures in order to charge students for god knows what purpose.
2. Good syllabus, bad teachers.
Let's face it here, the college is short on teachers. Many of the teachers whom they hire are fresh graduates who are looking for a temporary job that will take them further in the industry after gaining the required experience. There is a pathetic sign on the lamppost outside ICOM that is begging for teachers to join their pathetic work force. I do not mean to smear their name, but this is my honest opinion on the matter. The teachers are no doubt trying their best, but lack the experience required to educate young students. Many of the students do much of their studying on their own. The teachers are hopeless at guiding students in the right directions as most of them are in their late/mid 20's with the exception of the 3-4 experienced lectureres who have been here for some time. Again, if you want to study music, you're better off finding a private tutor who can guarantee a real certificate. ICOM's certificate means nothing as many have graduated without the proper skills required in the industry.
*As I am quite busy at the moment, I will update this with more reasons as to why ICOM is definitely not a place for aspiring musicians. If any ICOM officials see this, please acknowledge this thread and WORK ON what needs to be done. This is strictly my (and cumulatively majority of the students) opinion(s) on ICOM. This place aims to take your money (check out their ridiculous fees) and provide you with the bare minimum amount of knowledge that an ACTUAL musician would require to function in the real world of music.
P.S, the VP of ICOM, Dato Ravi will try to fool you with his smooth talking and false dreams of grandeur. He gives grand speeches to students and parents alike to convince them that ICOM is THE place to be if you want to be a musician. Bare in mind that he is a salesman if nothing else. See through his false approach to the matter if possible, because I did not at first.
*If you really want to be a musician, get out there and perform. Play gigs, write songs. Do not let this inherent form of trickery fool you into believing that you can achieve your dreams by paying RM100,000 for 4 years of useless information. Please do not make the mistake I did.
